In the face of the traditional boozer coming under pressure, largely from the greed of the big brewers, it's great to see loads of micro-breweries giving it a go. Went to a mini- 12 pump Beer Festival over the weekend and sampled some goodly quoffs. The pick of the crop:
VITAL SPARK- Abv 4.4% Fyne Ales, Achadunnan-Argyll. A rich dark beer that shows a glint of red. The taste is clean and slightly sharp with a hint of blackcurrent. TRUE GRIT- Abv 5% Millstone Brewery, Greater Manchester. A well hopped strong ale with a mellow bitterness with a grapefruit/citrus aroma. DAMSON PORTER- Abv 4.5% Burton Bridge Brewery, Burton-upon-Trent. A superb dark beer blended with a subtle infusion of Damsons, full flavoured and packed with a lingering aftertaste. {According to the blurb.} Oh and Lilley's Crazy Goat Cider weighing in at a respectable 6.8% Abv.
Any one got any favourite micro brews or owt to report on this front? It is to be encouraged.

Doom bar , old speckled hen and goliath (thumbs up) DoomBar doesn't particularly float me boat and I think it's only the bottled stuff that is still brewed in Cornwall, I heard the draught is brewed by Coors. Speckled Hen {Morland} was a lot better before they dropped the gravity, but I don't think it's really a 'micro' brewery any more either. Who brews the Goliath? Not heard of it, but it sounds like a big hitter.

Doom bar is served from the tap in the orange tree in Trent Vale and being the cheapest drink in there and me being a tight twat it was my beer of choice and I've become quite accustomed to it I must say

Sarah Hughes.. nice, a rare treat but sometimes found in the Black Lion Consall. Had a pint of it last week in the 'Mucky Duck' in Leek. {I think.} Agree with the Lymestone Brewery too, good gear, but only had it at the Gladstone Pottery do's. Not seen it on general sale around here.

Den Engel Belgian bar in Leek has some strong beers that I would certainly recommend I love a session in Engels but it's generally lager type wheat beer, very expensive and generally head swivelling. Not really real ale. Leave a shoe. Crafty Hen is great.

The Holy Inadequate is too hit an miss, some of their beers are too safe. Much better up The Hop Inn in Basford/Hartshill, get more of the new breweries on the block who brew beer with taste! Best thing to do around here for a good beer is to jump on a train and go to Red Willow bar in Macclesfield, now that is beer heaven.. 5 cask beers and 13 lines of mainly British tasty beer.

Think it was called The Prince Albert, it's on Albert Street , not too far from the (Shocking) Titanic Greyhound. They always have top beer on from the likes of Oakham, Marble, Tiny Rebel, Summer Wine, Mallinsons. Top stuff.

Went a wedding up Castle Registry the other week & popped in the Hop Inn on way to the reception. Had a Slaters IPA, which was a bit pokey for me at well over 5%, so perhaps I'll head up the Inadequate for some of their safe beers????

The Captain Smith Stout and the odd pint of Plum Porter, but other than that the Titanic Steerage etc is far too hoppy/tangy for my buds.

Not seen it on general sale around here. They run a pub in Newcastle, the Lymestone Vaults next to Chatwins and you can get the bottled stuff either directly from them or from Brown and Greens at Trentham www.lymestonebrewery.co.uk/Another good brewery is Peakstones Rock, up in the Moorlands. They name a few after the Alton Towers rides. www.peakstonesrock.co.uk/If you fancy a tip north then I recommend Dunham Massey brewery in Bowdon. www.dunhammasseybrewing.co.uk/
