I wouldn't contemplate letting him go. He's still got a lot to offer the team & club.

I'd sell him if a decent offer comes in.
We need an upgrade anyway for the RW and we have Odem (if we offer him a contract) as an arguably better option for that position anyway.
He isn't getting any younger and once his engine starts going he'll be useless since that's his biggest strength. It's all downhill from here onwards.
We've already got 3 other strikers so there's no place for him there.
He's probably on a decent wage and asking for the same or more. Even though he'll likely get less playing time.
He has at least a little resale value now. In a year he'll probably have none.

While Murphy is (was) probably better than he was given credit for at the end of his Blunderland days under Mad Roy and while he's done well at Ipswich, he is older than SJ and it is the Championship after all.
Would be Ser Flabber of House Ghasted if he rocked up here in place of Jon.
That said, you do have to wonder as to the wisdom of ano decent contract for SJW here now and so, as a Club, we have to weigh up the chance of some residual fee for him now vs. him walking as a free next year.
And if, within that, he gets a crack somewhere else in the Prem on a better deal than we'd be offering, we should have the good grace to wish him all the very best.
Depending who else is in our plans / may come in of course, I personally, would be in no hurry whatsoever to lose him from the squad.

But if TP came in with a 3 or 4-year deal (and there's probably only him in the country who'd offer him that kind of security), you'd have to think Jon would bite his baseball cap off. And if we saw him as more of a fringey player who we didn't want to offer anything like that to, we may be tempted to cash in with the £2m or £3m? Suppose the alternative would be just to let him run his deal down and get yet another year of reliable service out of him until his 33rd birthday, then wish him safe travels, but he'd probably be a bit miffed that we'd stood in the way of him getting more security this summer. Tricky one if TP really does offer him something long-term - and I'd be surprised if he didn't knowing the man-love he has for bloke.

If we cash in on Jon, think by the way that £2M is at least £1M too low, I would certainly not want Murphy as his replacement! Would want someone younger with more pace!

I wouldn't be shocked if Jon moved on this summer. Yeah you'd think the chances of him getting a new contract here are slim to zero and IF (and it's certainly an if) somebody came in with a three year offer now, we'd be doing Jon a favour by allowing him to go, rather than making him see out his contract. We need spaces in the squad anyway. It wouldn't be a surprise to see Bardsley go either but you have to wonder if there is anybody out there interested in picking up his contact?

With 3 strikers I expect that whatever we get for SJW (if he goes) will be put towards a winger. I can only see Murphy coming in if both Walters and Crouch go... and even then he'd be 3rd choice.

Can't believe we would contemplate losing Jon without a fight - another vital cog in the machine that we ain't in a position to lose yet.

Wage structure is a big issue for us. Then self sufficiency. With some money for young talent. I would prefer a player like Murphy. Then say naming teixiera. No disrespect to him. The named twenty five or less need to be useable. Our club is going to be in a mess if begovic huth n zonzi and walters go elsewhere for more wages and we miss out on our targets. Then there the fact at some time over the next two seasons we will need home grown ( tend to be more exoensive) players in.

Get 3m for SJW and put the money towards a permanent deal for Moses. If Joselu starts up top, I can see MBD starting on the right anyway, with the recovering Odemwingie as back up on a 12 month contract.
