Seeing Martin Paterson & Brek Shea on the same pitch as David Villa, Kaka and Andrea Pirlo is why I still can't take the MLS seriously at the moment. It's like when you get a billionaire takeover at Rochdale on FIFA so you spunk it all on a big name striker and neglect everywhere else. I saw martin Paterson in Tunstall park only 3 short weeks ago.

I don't follow the MLS much so I only just learned about the new playoff format, but my lord do I hate it. Teams with losing records do not belong in the playoffs.

or this:
"I try not to pay too much attention because for the past few years it has been damn painful."
Now we look good in a big game last night, we have a huge game against a reeling Orlando squad (sorry Mailman) this weekend, we have a playoff spot within our reach, and you think maybe it was just 'pure frustration'?
It's ok to suffer with your team, brother. It builds character. You gonna bail on Stoke when a few dark clouds appear on our horizon?
Not quite sure what to make of you yet, jordansnow. Not.......quite.......sure.

"City, you are my best friend and I will follow you until I am not able"
Hartzychoco's beloved Fire coming to the City Beautiful in a playoff 6 pointer with the upstart OCSC. City is on a horrible run of form but Chicago is going to be left a little "leggy" after last nights emotional drainer of a victory. Has Inchy lost the changing room or can he get his recently toothless Lions to give a good account of themselves? Rumor is the Fire "don't like it up 'em ..."

The MLS is a strange beast. Sure, it has lots of failings (plastic pitches, past-it players, orchestrated crowds, etc.) but it really does have momentum. Basically every American/Canadian kid under the age of 35 has grown up playing and consequently loving soccer (yes, I know, football). Add to that the amount of money and airtime the game is now enjoying and, whether we like it or not, they will be a force to be reckoned with in 10-15 years time. For example, the USA beat Germany in Berlin just a few weeks ago...
Living in BC, Canada, I adopted Seattle Sounders when I moved over here. They get good crowds, 40,000 or so, and it is an enjoyable atmosphere and experience. I'd say the standard is around bottom-end of the Championship. Contrary to what I have read in this thread, it really is better than Div 1 or Div 2.
The best fans in the MLS are Portland Timbers, end of. Seattle and Orlando are pretty good too. I met with Phil Rawlins a couple of weeks ago when Orlando were in Seattle. He is a good bloke, and because of all the SCFC connections there, I really hope they do well.

Fair enough. My thoughts in those original quotes were a reaction to someone supposing I'd "fuck off back to the MLS" after I got tired of Stoke. Me not being an MLS fan, I took offense to it and cast my honest opinions about the league. Hope the Fire make the playoffs and that they're something worth watching in the next few seasons because I'd enjoy to get into some local football, but just really not concerned about them right now.

I'm one of the original timbers army, signed the charter with the other 300 of the Timbers Army at the time to make city council vote on bringing a pro team to Portland. Greatest thing we ever did for football in the states. Have a copy of it in my house... It made a region have a real rivalry. I'm amazed by the fanbase in the NW now. No more thirsty thursday's in the NASL though where you could get in for 5 dollars and get beers for 2 till the 75th min at PGE park at the time! Those were the days, helping break down the baseball net to put up banners... cramming into buses and vans driving up and down I-5 to quarter full stadiums at times... Running through whole sections with the banners after a goal like mad men almost half way around Century Link field or Qwest Field now. Good times. My favourite mental was a friendly vs Preston North End who in 2007 were the much better side all over the pitch and still in the Championship. They were on the up and the game was tied 1 all and we had just wont a PK out of nowhere and I took a microphone in the dead center of the Timber Army in sect. 100 in around the 89th minute and yelled to the crowd and their goalie "Were going to nick this!" and the PK went in just moments after and I was lifted in the crowd like a rock god. Mental, didn't have to buy a drink all night

Great post, my friend. Hats off to you for being such an avid Timbers fan. Respect.
The best part about being a Sounders fan here in BC is winding up all the Whitecaps supporters!

Hey you too mate, I'm in Seattle now for work which brought me up here. Trust me I know windups. I was ballzy enough once to walk infront of the 3,000 strong ECS parade to quest everymatch while they were all in occidental park once with my timbers gear on People thought I was crazy, then I told em about being from Stoke then they all were like, ohh well... lol

The MLS is a silly league.
Kaka is with Brazil on international duty so none other than Lewis Neal is filling in.
It always seems to be one or the other and I really don't like the model they have of a top down approach.
It's on Sky I think too. The Revs vs Orlando.

Becks was in a midfield with Chris burchill. I just can't see how it will improve though and both of those players show the problems they will have imo. You've got Kaka who is 7 million dollars a year, is still good but over the hill but a legend and playing well. His wage and those of players like him cause a resentment in the rest of the players who earn usually no more than 100k a year. You then have a player who was destined for the Conference and lower before moving to the States and having in all fairness to him a resurgence. But again, he's a foreigner, he's average at best and he's blocking the chance for an American to be playing. What incentives are there for any young American to want to become a soccer player? The money isn't great compared to baseball, NFL and basketball, there's massive disparity in the earnings of the generally foreigners at the top and the rest and you see teams bringing Sean St Ledger's etc because they played in a decent league before simply because of reputation. I don't get what the end goal is. I enjoyed watching the MLS last season (don't have Sky so can't watch it as regularly as I like now) but I think the MLS needs a massive rethink.

Just my opinion of course, but USA as the next big thing football wise has been trotted out continuously since 94 World Cup. I remember coming out with the same line to a mate about it when I backed them at 4/1 to beat Brazil in a friendly 1998. They tonked them as I recall.
I dare say that the same platitudes were made in the 70s as well. I think it's great that the MLS has done better than many expected but to say it is changing either the face of world football or is improving the US national team is absolute poppycock.
