Was in Seattle yesterday, went for a walk after the game. The place was buzzing, so many fans on the lash. Wished id gone to the game. The baseball stadium is next door too and they were at home. Baseball finished about an hour after the nogger. Never been anywhere where the bars are so busy on a Sunday! Would of shown you a good spot! It's a great atmosphere here for Sounders games... I'm a Timbers fan but any NW club has a great atmosphere up here. When I'm down in Florida I miss the good beer, full bars, and full stadiums before every weekend match. Wore my Stoke shirt last time tottenham came to town in Seattle had a good time. If you guys are ever up here for your respective teams let me know! What are you talking about "when I am in Florida"? We have great beer here, full stadiums, and great atmosphere in the stadium and the bars.

I'd love to check out a game at the Sounders stadium and also a Mariners game. So frikkin expensive to get there though! The North West seems to "get" football and sports in general. The Seahawks fans have made that whole "12th man" thing their own. We were there a couple of years ago and quite a few folks spotted my lad's Stoke shirt - either because of the familiarity with the Prem or the fact it had "Cameron" on the back!

Like the man in the orthopedic shoe, I stand corrected Bayern. However, i'm sure that there is some relative of that statistic that puts MLS attendances at the top...somehow. Cant put my finger on it though. Can any of our North American brothers help me out of this hole i've dug for myself?

Per capita (which is the one I like and makes sense to show how popular the sport is withing the population) makes their attendances even worse.

That's pretty damn good for the States, especially considering all of the competition for your sporting dollar. I know I've heard somewhere that MLS is number 1, somehow, but I sure don't see it. But I'm happy with how our league is progressing, especially considering all of the other sports it's going up against.

There is a statistic that is quite remarkable regarding attendance in relation to the MLS. One thing is for sure, they are definitely the rising star in world soccer/football. The yanks are deadly serious about sport and their TV coverage of their various leagues sets the gold standard. I for one am really pleased that it's finally gaining a secure foothold over there after the failure of NASL and if they bring Blatter & co. down...then I may just forgive them for all the other non-sports stuff they do as well.

My problem with the MLS will be until there's promotion and relegation within a tiered league structure.
The regional conference thing (a la NFL) without the threat of relegation means the element of passion is always going to be missing.
I don't like how new franchises can just pop up and buy their way in either...

We use the playoff scheme to keep the passion. Nogga as a professional sport over here is relatively new so sides have to buy their way in with our set up. I actually like it because it keeps out the riff raff and forces the owners to make a serious investment to show their commitment.

I've been to 2 NYCFC games this season, both were enjoyable with predictably crap results. It's going to take more than a season to get this team up and running and more than just the arrival of the English muffin. But for $35 for a decent seat and an easy subway ride to and from it's still a bargain night out in NY. The fans are loyal and passionate here. We've come a long way since my Miami Fusion supporting days back in 2001.

The regional conference thing (a la NFL) without the threat of relegation means the element of passion is always going to be missing. I don't like how new franchises can just pop up and buy their way in either... The football league seemed to survive quite well for many years without a trap door out the bottom. I think guaranteed relegation out of league football didn't come along until the 80s. And you just can't escape the fact that building a league today is much different than building a league 100 years ago. More up front investment is required and people aren't just going to drop a few hundred million (including stadium construction) to get booted down to second tier after their first season. Also, there are over 100 metro areas in the states that are larger than Stoke. The regional split is unavoidable over the long term. It may offend the sensibilities of every other footballing nation, but that is simply the only way.

One other point, TBF regarding the standard. Five years ago most people on this board equated the standard to League Two or the The Conference. So arguably, MLS has won a few promotions in standard over the last few years.
You see some rumors on various blogs about going from three to five designated players. If that happens the standard will again improve.

Yes, I can see that now - as you say it's the sensibilities of tradition and history which probably prejudice my view. I've been to a few baseball games in NY (Yankees and Mets) and they were really good afternoons/evenings out. America does do sport as an event very well, I'll give them that. Maybe one day we'll see Bud and Chilli Dog vendors up and down the Boothen steps, that I would welcome...

You don't have NW beer so it's not that great. 50,000 + is a full stadium. The bars near the bowl are nothing like in Vancouver, Seattle, the midwest or the NE teams... it's not there yet. It's getting there, but it's a way better day in those places. If I didn't have fam in Orlando I probably wouldn't go to as many games out of the whole experience of an MLS weekend. There are better places for that atm in my opinion and Seattle on gameday is up there and I'm not even a fan.

It is, There is bars surrounding the stadium which is right in downtown and off of street cars and the Max line and it's loud as shit and always a good atmosphere. I was one of the 300 charter members who signed and lobbied for the city to get the MLS nod from the semis, original member of the early fan club. Called, emailed and help setup petition for it to happen. I've done my bit for MLS in America. I travel too much now to be directly involved but I still love going to games every year. I worked for the team at one point and have friends there still in the medical dept. I'm heading down Friday for this weekend's game versus the Revs... Should be a good day.

I bartend part time at one of the best craft beer bars in the mid Atlantic region. (The brewers at Dogfish head are my regulars) so I know enough to know there isn't much in Florida. The Pacific NW is a beer haven! That said I'm tying my MLS lot to Philadelphia... Just need to find time to get to some matches... An Edu Jersey is a must lol
