I don't mind the Liverpool supporters going overboard, if Ryan stays with us for the rest of his career I'd happily line his every step with daisies during his last game on the express understanding that no one else in the country will give much of a fuck.

I don't remember all this fuss when Shearer left Newcastle and he actually retired. Why all this palaver? Gerrard is a very good player who has never won the title and has been a decent servant in an under performing England side. Nothing more. Complete overkill. Exactly. All the media at the moment is the old Liverpool lot from 25 years ago and he is Mr. Liverpool. As far as theyre concerned anything and everything to do with the club is the very best. Never mind that hes been a bit of a failure considering how good they think he is. Steven Gerrard "a bit of a failure". Right up there with the most ridiculous things I've ever seen written on this message board in the 8 years I've frequented it. Mind you, aren't you a shit fan?

Must be loads of factors that play into it, but all this hoopla has had me wondering if I've been watching a different Steven Gerrard. He's good, very good,..but he's not THAT good, and never has been. During his peak years, he was so ill-disciplined and used to rampage all over the pitch - to the point that Benitez had to play him on the wing, didn't he? Their previous success and current underachieving as well as scouse sentimentality has made them ripe for this kind of thing. And it's almost as if they're trying to whip up some sympathy for him having had to spend 15 years there with just a Champions League and a few other cups to show for it. Poor Stevie They've still managed to retain the aura of a superclub despite not having won the league for 25 years, and suppose you've got to factor in that their worldwide support, and their media profile, is phenomenal and that's all playing into this Gerrard thing in a Princess Di kind of way, although Gerrard seems to have morphed into more of Queen Mother figure.

His relative merits mean nothing. This whole Gerrard circus is equal parts the spectacle of the Premier League - the title is won, the season therefor dead - and the myth of Liverpool football club.
There's no point taking it out on him next weekend neither the media nor the player would understand.

Steven Gerrard in his day was one of the greatest central midfielders of the last 30 years or more. He will go down in history as one of the top two Liverpool players of all time, which is some accolade considering he wasn't that good. Before people start gobbing off about me being a closet Liverpool fan,I'm just a football fan who isn't a bitter fucker because I hate a certain football club, and who appreciates good footballers. Some of the shit spouted in this thread and others about Gerrard is embarrassing. I don't understand why folk are bemoaning the fact that the media are concentrating their attention on the end of the career of someone who has been a top top player for 17 years or so.

Obviously as a Spurs fan you can tell me to mind my own business but here is my two penn'orth. Stoke fans have always struck me as being a top crowd. I dont just mean when i have seen them at Spurs or other London grounds but generally. Steve Gerrard has been an incredible player in my book. We all know Liverpool fans are the most cringeworthy maudlin bunch of twats you'll ever meet but it would really reflect well on Stoke to give him a decent farewell. Mind your own business. Psycophant It's sycophant. Even then it makes no sense. stick to taking pictures of your dog. Retard.

As I begin to write this I can almost hear the howls of derision from certain sections of our supporter base, however I feel pretty strongly about this so I am going to make a suggestion for the Liverpool game. Be interested in your thoughts. As we know, Steven Gerrard is bringing the curtain down on his career in English football at the Britannia Stadium. Gerrard has been, in my opinion, a fantastic asset not only for his club, for also for his country. Never once eschewing a call up or putting himself or his body first, his England career can be rightly considered in comparison with anyone who has worn the Three Lions. His 114 caps for his country is testament to his enduring capability in the middle of midfield for England, and in my adult lifetime of watching the game only Paul Scholes can be considered his equal. But in my opinion, Gerrard stands for more than that, and that is why it is my hope that Stoke fans will put aside personal pettiness and recognise his other attributes. As Stoke City supporters, there are few attributes that we value more than loyalty, and in this regard Gerrard stands completely alone. He has, on far more occasions than Liverpool Football Club should have found themselves, been the single glimmer of light, the only catalyst for the moderate success the club has enjoyed (relative to it's standing) over the past 20 years. In 2005, he single handedly dragged them back into a Champions League Final they had no right to be in, based solely on his work ethic and appetite to succeed. Gerrard had ample opportunity to move during the 2000's, move to bigger clubs, better clubs, clubs that could (shudder…) "match his ambition". He didn't. He stayed loyal and faithful to the city he was raised in. And this, more than anything else, makes him worthy of particular praise. So, to my suggestion. I'm not asking us to sing "you'll never walk alone", or "there's only one Steven Gerrard". What I feel is the right thing to do is a minute's applause in the 8th minute to acknowledge and pay respect to the loyalty and career of an exceptional sportsman. Everywhere he's been this year, they've sung that fucking song about him falling over. Everywhere. I have been brought up on the belief that Stoke fans are different from the rest, cut from a different cloth. We are supporters who recognise and reward achievement, but more importantly character. Gerrard has shown it in spades and, in the eyes of the world, we have a unique opportunity to respect that, and show to a watching world what separates Stoke City from the rest of the flock. Thanks for reading.

So were Scholes, Lampard, Terry, Henry, Bergkamp, Vieira and Giggs just off the top of my head

Decent effort Mr Oatcake But it falls down because Blackburn had every right to win the league that year due to the fact that Jack Walker had spunked millions in his quest for glory. Anyway I'm not getting into a discussion on the careers of two players who played in completely different positions on the football pitch because it's irrelevant. I just don't understand all the hatred towards one of this countries greatest ever midfielders that's all. It's unhealthy and a bit strange really.

Ha ha ok fair enough, let's just say that, Blackburn would never have won the league without Shearer in 1995 and Liverpool would never have won the European Cup and the FA cup in 2005 and 2006 without Gerrard. We can both agree on that. We will never agree on your last statement though because for me,Gerrard was the more complete midfielder out of all the midfielders of his generation. He had everything that you could wish for from a central midfielder and captain.

Perfectly put FM. No one is slagging him off, he has been a very good player who will be talked abut long after he retires and will live forever in Liverpool folklore but hour upon hour coverage on Sky and across the BBC? Pull outs in every tabloid? It's all just way over the top for decent footballer when better plays have left clubs without a hundredth of the fanfare.

The whole circus around the retirement of a reasonably successful footballer is ridiculous and very much the product of the media's obsession with the club he plays for. If Gerrard is one of the best players any individual has seen I feel very sorry for that individual - there have been so many so much better.

I just hope we as Stoke City supporters can show a bit of class
I dont want him 'lorded up' at our place particularly - its our last home game after all but, polite applause would be enough -
I certainly dont go for this Gerrard baiting under these circumstance either
e.g 'he cost you the league' etc etc - just shows our classless - low brow - knuckle dragging, side
sadly - to the world (who will be watching)
And noting the simmering arguments above I would offer this - for a mere fraction of what hes actually achieved in the game,
he would be bestowed legendary status at Stoke City.
and so
You have to admire his career, no matter who you support

There are two ways of judging Gerrard, the first is subjective and relates to peoples opinions when watching him play. The second is objective and that relates to the statistics in terms of appearances, trophies won and individual awards, anyone casting doubt on the objective details is simply way off the mark and therefore are likely letting their opinion of him as a person, or the club he plays for, influence their view.
Whether he is a better or worse player than Scholes for instance has nothing remotely to do with his overall ability or whether he should receive a good reception on his appearance at the Brit.
