NZonzi isn't a typical box to box player. But he isn't a defensive midfielder either. In our system (4231) he tends to play in advance of the DM (Whelan) and behind or alongside the Number 10 (Bojan or Ireland). If we played 442 he would be the more advanced of the two central midfielders - i.e. the Eustace role. Then our formation is actually 41131, when Glenn and Steven play. True - but a lot of fans seem to find 4231 difficult, so their heads would explode at the thought of 41131.

So at some point of the game he is a defensive midfielder? Thanks. At any point of a game we could have 11 defenders. Doesn't mean they are all defensive players. Thanks. Were you able to disprove the tackles stats?

If they are true, and my source is wrong then god help us. Pieters has played 9 games less than Steve and Bardsley 10. If they are making more tackles with 10 games or 900 minutes less football, then what does that say, considering he's a DM in your eyes?

Without even looking at the stats I would reckon Shawcross has made significantly fewer tackles than Pieters or Bardsley too. You'd want to look at blocked shots and headers won to get a better view of his defensive contributions, or compare him to Whelan. That being said I think it is quite apparent that N'Zonzi is a box to box midfielder first and a defensive midfielder only on occasion.
