Bell gone to an absolute jaffa from Roach, damage has been done though. 341-5. Turned out to be a very good day for England - well done Bell, Root and Stokes. Love the West Indies tour - perfect for evening watching! Although I've missed most of today's play - had other stuff to do this evening. Terrible first session - symptomatic of so many of our recent travails. Tentative batting, cheap dismissals. Handing the initiative to the opposition. Don't ask enough questions. Conservative. But thereafter - on the counter attack. Asking questions of the opposition. Make them worry. Attacking play. More of this type of cricket please!

Should be able to push on to 450-500 with a bit of luck. Mouth watering prospect of Stokes going strong with Buttler kicking off. Just hope we don't have the traditional 341 for 5 turns into 395 all out.

Stokes gone, Buttler for a duck and the ball moving around, might not be a bad thing to get them in whilst the pitch is doing something......

Not the best of mornings, but you'd hope given the conditions....and the standard of the opposition we could put them under some real pressure.

Just back from watching my son play football - nice to see we've made some decent inroads into their batting; 4 wickets down for a hundred or so. Key wicket now is Chanderpaul. Seems like something we've been saying about the Windies for 20 years. That man is awesome!

Should really be 5 down with Stokes front-footing but that's cricket.
It's all fairly placid, Chanderpaul as many runs as he's scored is too defensive for my liking to be entertaining. Still fascinated by his stance mind.

Hopefully sets things up for something later in the test - the Windies have done well after losing 4 wickets quite cheaply. Be interesting to see how our bowlers cope if the crab goes on and bats a long time. Anyway, I expect to see England back out sometime in the afternoon session if not (surely) after tea which means Cook and Trott getting their second bite at the cherry sometime today. Squeaky bum time for them! Because both will be tested. Then again - it is test cricket!

It's the same old story, Cook and Opener X get out very cheaply before two of Ballance, Bell or Root form a partnership which looks fairly secure. Hopefully they can push on tomorrow into an unassailable lead before Jimmy gets the record.

An OK day from England - but better opposition will exploit the same old weaknesses far more than the Windies are doing. There's a small window to get these problems sorted, and if they're not they need to replace the old guard - and not too late to affect the Ashes.
Also I'm struggling with the decision to call Moeen Ali into the squad (as I was the decision to leave him out of the original squad - he was always going to recover from that injury by the start of the first Test). What does calling Moeen into the squad into the series say to Tredwell and Rashid? Surely they'll play Moeen after calling him up - and Tredwell has had a good start - what do they do if he takes 5 wickets in the second innings? And Rashid, now knows he'll have another tour where he won't see action. Poor management IMHO.

Rashid should get his chance, we know Ali can do it, so let's see what one of our back ups can do.

Very frustratingly , I've missed the whole of the first three days ( unheard of for me to do that ! ) .... We don't seem to have dominated proceedings , but are in a position of some strength .....looking forward to watching some good Test Cricket tomorrow .

We don't seem to have dominated proceedings , but are in a position of some strength .....looking forward to watching some good Test Cricket tomorrow . Good to have you back Bish It's been quite an old fashioned test match to be honest, lots of really good contests between bat and ball on a fairly even pitch which suits both. If you can get past the new ball, it really flattens out as Bell and Root showed first innings as did Chanderpaul and Blackwood in the second. Blackwood will probably never work harder for a century than he did today. We've dropped a few sharp ones in the field which if taken would probably add another 70 runs to the lead. Still no improvements in the Cook department mate

Rashid should get his chance, we know Ali can do it, so let's see what one of our back ups can do. It is a strange situation England have created - and the success of both Tredwell and Stokes in the first innings complicates things. Stokes did very well in the #6 all rounder spot particularly with the bag but was also the quickest of our fast bowlers. Certainly don't enough to keep the number six position that was Ali's last season. And Treadwell did everything you'd want a slow bowler to do in a first innings - wickets and control. So what to do? Maybe go with three quicks and two offies? In which case I guess Jordan is the unlucky one? But Ali at #8 seems too low. What about opening with him? And dumping Trott - that seems harsh after one test, and, for some reason it seems harsher than doing the same thing to Jordan. Changing bowlers seems easier to do than switching batsmen!

Great to see Balance still batting at the close last night. I think he was put in an impossible position in the WC coming into the side at the last moment with no time in the middle to prepare. And it showed. His confidence was shot. You could see he is still recovering in ths game. Really hope he goes onto a ton in the morning that will be a big step finward in his return to form.
As far as Cook and Trott go - you boys need to score runs. But that ain't going to be easy. Cook remains the biggest worry. In that Trott is easily replaced. Cook, less so. Seems far to easy to bowl to him. Nothing short, nothing in leg - full outside off. If you're not having success change the line to right arm round. Keep it there and at some point he'll mess up.
