Cricket needs a good West Indies team. Then we can have five match series again Not as long as their Test series at home coincide with the IPL , I fear mate ....Any top West Indian player is always going to be tempted these days .

England should try their hardest to get Jason Gillespie, and get rid of that clown Moores. Talking of Moores, is he related to Mick McCarthy? Don't hold your breath. The news today of Strauss's likely appointment as managing director of the ECB does not suggest the conservatism at the heart of English cricket is likely to change. After all the current malaise started with Strauss's appointment as captain in a dismal tour of the Windies. Cook's approach as captain is a continuation of Strauss's approach. A long way from how Vaughan approached the game when he was in charge. Embarrassing appointment. The status quo to well and truly remain......

Time to turn to the New Zealand mini series, Lords was as flat as a pancake last year when Sri Lanka managed to hang on for a draw so assuming it will be a similar pitch (it usually is these days) I would envisage this will be the line up:
Lyth Cook Ballance Bell Root Ali Stokes Buttler Jordan/Plunkett Broad Anderson
I'd like to see us being a bit more ambitious and go with a wrist spinner but lets be frank if they didn't pick him for the Windies tour they never ever will:
Cook Lyth Ballance Taylor Root Buttler Stokes Rashid Jordan/Plunkett Broad Anderson

Embarrassing appointment. The status quo to well and truly remain...... He did have the happy knack of winning Test series though mate , whatever his critics may have said about him . I really like Strauss as a cricketer and a person mate, but it's not the appointment we need to shake things up. Vaughan or Stewart would have been the better options for me....

True. And there were some exceptional times. But, as that old saying goes, success hides a multiple of sins. In this case the culture of conservatism was firmly established in Strauss's tenure. In both tactics and selection. And that has continued with Cook. We are moribund. And we don't seem to learn. Remember bringing back Prior last year? It didn't work. This year we repeated the mistake with Trott. What's that quote in the bible - it's harder for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is to drop a senior English batsmen. I am very concerned about the upcoming test series. We seem incredibly fragile. Borderline dysfunctional!

I think you are probably correct Partick , I just like to point these little things out , purely to balance the argument .....it's quite obviously a safety first appointment .......no rocking of boats at Lord's .....perish the thought of anything a little radical coming out of there

Of course success does cover over the cracks .....they always seem a little wider though when we lose .....a defeat like yesterday's tends to have people dashing towards the panic button far to early .....poor Bob Willis feels so embarrassed that he'd drop half the team ! ....then again he is always the same , Ian Botham would pick a side that contains about fifteen players so that he always " gets it right ".

Indeed. As Kipling put it I don't think we are doing very well in this regard! And havent for some time. Complacent in victory, and negligent in defeat. We just drift. Oh - and yes. I am very disappointed with the performance overall in this series. Not disappointed to lose though - actually I'm thrilled for the Windies. It's wonderful to see them back competing. And playing with some swagger and class. Not everywhere. But enough.

But also brilliant. We just weren't up to the task - that of competing with the best. Funny thing cricket - I always respect opponents and genuinely enjoy their good performances. When it comes to football - none of that applies. Cricket is clearly a civilising influence.

It would have been interesting to have seen the West Indian batsmen facing their own fast bowling attack wouldn't it ? Even the greatest of players would baulk at the prospect of facing constant short pitched bowling from both ends from four or sometimes more genuine fast bowlers . You are right cricket is the game when the performances of opponents and rivals can be enjoyed and appreciated even when you are on the receiving end ....it sets it apart from any other sport .

Dear me, it would seem that you have an altogether mistaken view of 'our Matty' He's a gentle giant who seems to live a wonderfully balanced lifestyle. A family man who spends his time writing cookery books, fishing and playing in charity games. Nothing remotely arrogant in that. (note: no dancing through the tulips at this time - or leading people up the primrose path)
Where the dickens do you get the idea that Hayden is anything other than a gentleman through and through. I have never seen, heard or read of anyone pointing the bone at Haydo and accuse him of being arrogant. Skilful and confident in his capabilities, yes of course, but arrogant not a ghost of a chance. Is this yet another English press beat up I wonder. They do feed you a lot of twaddle I fear.
He did spent a lot of time in the middle taking the brunt of the hostile opening attacks and shielding his 'little mate' Langer. Is this arrogance or is it playing a brave opening batsman role. I suspect the latter.
Come on fellas. lighten up. See the opposition players in anything other than the results of the many and varied manipulations and outpourings of your fourth estate propaganda machine. The Daily Mail and the Guardian can't always be taken at face value....... or can they. By the way, for what it's worth I think that Athers is good value.
This isn't a preliminary, extra early, pre Ashes chest beating exercise, is it?
You should be more concerned about the current Australian openers rather than spend your time time mulling over the ghosts of Ashes past. I for one am looking forward to seeing what the English can do with the Kiwis and the Windies with the Australian's before the real battle starts. That might show a hint of the future of Test cricket over the next few years. Roll on I say.
From what I see it isn't a predetermined series result - the Ashes are alive and kicking. (irrespective of what Steve Smith had to say) Ask me again after your side has been selected, and the Windies and Kiwi series' are over and it might be a different answer though.

It was just a wee joke! Matthew Hayden became something of a cartoon character for being "the most unpopular cricketer of all time". Of course when you unpick the charges, you find it's all baloney. He was a fine batsmen and a fierce competitor. Not his fault he overtook Brian Lara's record test score for a while with his huge triple hundred against Zimbabwe. Anyway, I thought it was the Pommes that were supposed to be guilty of whining!

Oh dear - as a last legacy from the Windies tour it seems Cookie has upset Boycsy; something to do with calling Straussy Straussy or a Yorkie a Dorkie or some such. Alastair Cook: 'Untouchable' England captain angers BoycottGenerally, I quite like what Boycott has to say on cricket, but occasionally he goes OTT. This is one of those moments. Cook probably shouldn't have said what he said when asked for his thoughts on Graves's pre tour comments. But it's not something to get all narky about. Still, all this bickering and bitching is just what we want ahead of the domestic international season starting in a couple if weeks. Or maybe not!
