As a kid it was probably Sir Jimmy, however whilst I would have never shouted it from the rooftops because we all hated (dirty) Leeds, I thought Billy Bremner was a fantastic player and I basically tried to model my own playing style on him, possibly due to the fact that I was also very much a shortarse at the time In fact I was the shortest kid in my year at school right up until I left Only a growth spurt from the ages 16-19 saved me from developing a bad case of SMS I have a sneaking suspicion my 'favourite player now' will shortly be Bojan and he'll hopefully be my favourite for a good few years

For Stoke it's Denis Smith and Ryan Shawcross. But generally across the whole footballing world it has to be Denis Smith and Ryan Shawcross.

Of non Stoke players, Jimmy Greaves inspired me and I was gutted he missed the Wolrd Cup final in 66. Of more recent players - I'll go for Scholes and not Just because he shares a surname with our chief exec! I do think he was a wonderful player and I liked the way he remained modest about his achievements right up to the day he retired. He was a down to earth player playing for one of the great clubs in the world. I hate them but I could never hate him. A final mention for the late Duncan Edwards. I only saw him live once but what a player he would have been if he had lived! Hard as nails a beast of a player but with a sublime touch. For Stoke, I was going to say Jimmy Greenhoff but thinking harder about it, I'd left school by the time he arrived at the club. So I'll go for John Ritchie - I was a teenager when he arrived and he was a great leader of the line - I was gutted when Waddo sold him to Wednesday - one of the great man's few poor moves. All was forgiven when he bought him back. Of today's Stoke players - its a toss up between Ryan Shawcross and Bego. I'll go for Ryan as Bego gets a black mark for the Chelsea Transfer "wobble". Ryan is everything you'd want for an icon. A great club servant who we are lucky to have kept as we've risen from the Championship to the top half of the Prem. For the future - I hope to see Bojan finally fulfil his potential - how good could he be - and how good would it be if it happened at Stoke? We could have a galactico on our hands and he looks to be modest with it as well!

When I was a kid it had to be Steino.
Now, it would have to be Ryan Shawcross.
Other players, when I was younger it was Alan Shearer and today it has to be Cristiano Ronaldo, phenomenal player.
Another player with a special mention though would be Ricardo Fuller. Love the bloke.

Loved them all in the mid 70's when I started going difficult to say my favourite, between Alan Hudson, Terry Conroy,Jimmy Greenhoff, Denis Smith , Mike Pejic,Jacky Marsh & Gordon Banks and Geoff Salmons what a time that was!!! Now its its more difficult since Ricardo Fuller has moved on, I love Arnie, Bojan & Muni & of course Ryan.Bojan could become a Stoke legend.

For people of my vintage, it's hard to pick a favourite as a kid. We were at our lowest ebb, rarely on the Tele and generally shit. There were too many kicks in the gut to have a real footballing hero. Therefore you have to go with a character and there was no bigger character than George Berry. His testimonial night was unforgettable.
Favourite player now? Shawcross without a moments hesitation. An exemplary character unfairly crucified by a sordid, biased media. When the owl faced poltroon hung him out to dry against Sweeden it hurt like I was related to him. An illogical emotion for a middle aged man to feel and perhaps borderline sad but there it is. Our captain fantastic in every regard.

for Stoke it was probably Greenhoff, he arrived the same season as Ritchie came back, one of early season supporting Stoke, Pele from around the world, he played at Stoke I think in about 1970.
Now it would be Ryan for Stoke and Messi from around the world

Greenhoff for Stoke. Always liked Bob Latchford at Everton.
Nowadays it's Shawcross for Stoke and Hazard for Chelsea

Geoff Hurst was my first idol, as I grew up a bit Crooks (while with us) and Chambo were heroes before we slumped into bad times
Now, since Fuller's gone, there is a vacancy. Shawcross and Huth are great, Bego likewise, but I want either Arnie or Bojan to become what they are capable of, and get the crowd out of their seats on a regular basis with some magic
Non Stoke I thought Dalglish was something special as a player in the 70s
Now I quite like Zabaleta and Ivanovic, not sure why they just seem like unsung heroes a bit but are both very effective. What's depressing is the way in which constant media exposure and hype makes it almost impossible to like any other team or their players, at all. In the 70s I'd have loved Southampton having a run near the top of the league, now I think they're jumped up arseholes and can't wait for the bubble to burst...
