I was lucky enough to start watching Stoke in the early 80s, and I can't choose between Mickey Thomas, Sammy McIlroy and Mark Chamberlain. Nowadays it has to be Ryan Shawcross, closely followed by Glenn Whelan who unfortunately has received far too much undeserved stick.

As a young un... Stoke: Kavanagh None Stoke: Beckham
Now... Stoke: Shawcross or Bego ( I can't make my mind up who I prefer more!) None Stoke: I wouldn't say I have a favourite player outside of Stoke but I admire Vincent Kompany

As a child: Fox, Pesch and Steino for Stoke. Schmeichel and Gary Speed for non Stokies. Present/Recent: Shawcross, Bego and Big Mama (Stoke). Lewandowski, Aguero and Suarez (as a player, not a person) for non-Stokies.

Of non Stoke players, Jimmy Greaves inspired me and I was gutted he missed the Wolrd Cup final in 66. Of more recent players - I'll go for Scholes and not Just because he shares a surname with our chief exec! I do think he was a wonderful player and I liked the way he remained modest about his achievements right up to the day he retired. He was a down to earth player playing for one of the great clubs in the world. I hate them but I could never hate him. A final mention for the late Duncan Edwards. I only saw him live once but what a player he would have been if he had lived! Hard as nails a beast of a player but with a sublime touch. For Stoke, I was going to say Jimmy Greenhoff but thinking harder about it, I'd left school by the time he arrived at the club. So I'll go for John Ritchie - I was a teenager when he arrived and he was a great leader of the line - I was gutted when Waddo sold him to Wednesday - one of the great man's few poor moves. All was forgiven when he bought him back. Of today's Stoke players - its a toss up between Ryan Shawcross and Bego. I'll go for Ryan as Bego gets a black mark for the Chelsea Transfer "wobble". Ryan is everything you'd want for an icon. A great club servant who we are lucky to have kept as we've risen from the Championship to the top half of the Prem. For the future - I hope to see Bojan finally fulfil his potential - how good could he be - and how good would it be if it happened at Stoke? We could have a galactico on our hands and he looks to be modest with it as well! +1

As a kid, my favourite player no question was Kavanagh. I still have a real soft spot for him, despite being the Oatcake boo boy. In the grand scheme of things, much of what he said was true and it was coming from the right place. I've always wondered about Kavanagh then playing for us now. Would he get into our team? Course he fucking would. It's incredible to think he only played one season in the Prem and it was when he was well past his prime for Wigan, yet he was still their best player. Thorne was probably second although quite a long way off and then probably Ian Cranson. Non-Stoke players, Gazza for sure, certainly number one. I only caught the tail end of his career but that goal at Euro 96 still sends shivers down my spine. There's a few others though, Michael Owen for sure. That 1998 World Cup goal... I even had a Michael Owen special from Shoot magazine (remember that?) that I kept for years. Oh... and the original Ronaldo. I even had a fake £10 Hanley market (I think?) Brazil shirt with Ronaldo 9 on the back. What a player. Nowadays, I dunno, I'm less about favourites now. I loved Ric and Mama. I still remember seeing him stretched off against Spurs I think it was and thinking, he's never going to play for Stoke again I could tell it was the end for Mama. Shawcross and Begovic from the current 11.
