If you take individual players out of the equation, Hodgson has picked a squad of 21 players. Why?
Surely it would be highly beneficial to England to give a call up to a young or un-capped player, to gain valuable experience of the international setup against a very low quality opposition. It would make sense to introduce 2 new players in the event of injury crisis or similar event, so that they can fit in seamlessly into the setup.

You have no better knowledge of those England players than I have. Regarding Ryan you cannot give an unbiased opinion because you are a dedicated fan. If your view of Ryan was totally accurate it would be shared by many thousands of England fans pleading for his inclusion, there is no such call going out. I would love to see Ryan Shawcross in the England team, firstly as a tribute to the hard work of Tony Pulis and Mark Hughes in his development, secondly as an honour to the club and city of Stoke on Trent and thirdly because so many Stoke fans prey for it to happen. My involvement in this thread is purely to point out that I see no agenda against Ryan just a manager who doesn't rate him that highly. Regarding Hodgson, he would not have been my choice, but as long as he's there I will support England, because that's my country, shame on anyone calling for the team to lose. Good god man you really are an odious sod at times. I frankly haven't the energy to argue with you. I imagine you take a dull walk home after a dull day at work and only engage your own brain enough to lap up the shit that the southern media pen pushers write about the nasty hard man from stoke who isn't good enough for England. Most Stoke fans want Ryan to get his call up BECAUSE HE DESERVES IT!

Surely though it is more beneficial for the U21 players to gain valuable experience in a competitive fixture, and for more journey men players to be integrated in against San Marino and Estonia (possibly getting some game time as well)

There are all sorts of ways to look at it I suppose. Sadly, I'm currently in the "not really giving a monkeys" camp where England are concerned.

Come on onion. Answer Geoff's question. Who do the media despise? Answer the question man. It's Wilson isn't it? The answer is actually Dennis Wise, but I'm not telling Geoff until he answers my question, so here it is again: Geoff! How can a man with no agenda whatsoever, who only picks players based on ability and form, possibly be influenced by comments from a club manager about which players he should pick? Come on Geoff, I've been perched on the edge of a tall rooftop for the past three hours, if you don't answer soon I'll have to jump.

I hope you are going to reply Dave to the question, how do you judge other England players you don't watch. You're asking someone to reply to a question? Don't know how you fucking dare geoff, you've swerved 100's of questions on here from posters in the past......... Including whether you know Tony Pulis. Refuse to answer that one ten times over. I'm beginning to think you are Tony Pulis and this defence of Hodgson is typical of your infamous stubborn nature.

Pieters is good enough to be picked for Holland. Cameron is good enough to be picked for the US.
Both of these teams are better than England.
But Ryan who is there or thereabouts our best player isn't good enough for England?

Just to answer some of the previous posters. There have been numerous Shawcross threads about his non selection for England. Most of these threads have contained many posts about so called agendas against Ryan. I am simply saying that the stark reality is that Hodgson doesn't rate Ryan or even see him as an England player, if ever he had a chance of being selected this was it. Whether Hodgson is right in his view of Ryan is a matter of opinion, of course 99% of people on here think he is wrong. The bottom line for me though is that the England manager selects what he thinks is the best team and players and there is no agenda driving his selections. The fact for instance that Everton have conceded more goals than Stoke this season does not prove very much other than Martinez has never produced good defensive teams whereas Hughes has. Woy has ignored Ryan here and if there had been others selected ahead of him your point of him simply fancying others ahead of him would carry more weight. Recently there have been others, detached from Stoke in the media, that have suggested Ryan should get a look in. However he remains excluded from selection, yet the squad is TWO places short! In addition we then find out that the plan, in case of defensive cover being needed, will be to recall Chambers from the U21's, which will disrupt their team, rather than actually call Ryan up in the first place. He SHOULD take another look at Ryan and I do not believe that he is so blind as to not realise just how obvious a choice Ryan, after all he is the CAPTAIN of a team that finished just behind his darlings Southampton. The Wilshit rumours spouted on here a few weeks back could indeed have something in them.

I understand what Geoff is saying, I think. He's saying Hodgson doesn't rate him. He's not saying he agrees with that assessment. clearly hodgson doesent rate him after hanging him out to dry against one of the worlds best strikers , who was on the day turning in the best performance of his international career ,

I find myself agreeing with Geoff on this one. 3. Woy does have an excellent record both domestically and internationally. I don't rate him but at present I am in a minority. Including getting England knocked out of the World Cup after 2 games? And previously in the Euros losing to Italy in the first knock-out round by putting 10 men behind the ball and praying for a 0-0 scoreline. The single most negative performance Ive ever seen from the National side. Hodgson is a dinosaur and has been living on past successes for far too long. He HAD a good record but hes not been able to keep up-to-date with the modern game And this is speaking objectively and ignoring his treatment of Shawcross.

Having just watched Englands Jagielka & Stones ripped a new one by a pretty darn average Russian side i would expect Hodgson to swallow his bias and pick someone who can actually defend.

My view, biased or otherwise, is based on watching games and players LIVE. Yours is based on echoing what the likes of Andy Townsend and John Motson babble on about it. If you wouldn't have had Hodgson in the first place how can you even attempt to defend him? What's he done to suggest your original view was wrong? Perversely I thought Hodgson was a good choice and was a pragmatic type of manager who would recognise our shortcomings, get us organised, well drilled and who would place value on defenders who can defend. Sadly I was wrong. Woy is a baffoon who is scared of his own shadow and incapable of picking anyone on merit in case it upsets the media, who having hounded out managers with far better records than his, seem to be doing a great job of keeping him in a job. You are a little bit biased Dave! We can add the 'Shawcross is England's best centre half' to the 'Begovic is the best keeper in the world' can we?

I do agree about his recent record and would replace him immediately. Sadly not enough people agree with me yet, I put forward that point as it is what is keeping him in that job but as long as he is manager, it is his choice who he picks. Sooner or later his record will catch up with him and he will go.

What about him pretty much consigning Blackburn to relegation just a few years after they won the league or the fact that he barely lasted 6 months at Liverpool, who were so desperate to get rid, they bought back Dalglish despite him not managing in donkeys years? To be fair, he did well at Fulham and West Brazil, but that would hardly inspire me to pick him for the England job.
