Celtic have let it be known that they didn't bring this up with UEFA, which I am pleased to hear. The reason the Poles are out is that fielding a player who is serving a suspension is taken very seriously - the administrators want players to fear red cards - and the penalty is the game being awarded to the opponents 3-0. Celtic lost the first leg 4-1, so go through on away goals. I don't think that's entirely true, is it? I believe the rules state that the opposing club must file a protest first before any match can be deemed a forfeit, in which case Celtic have been canting over what is essentially a fucking admin error. Celtic are a business - and they desperately need the money. They'd be mental not to kick up a fuss and use their influence with UEFA to get their own way.

Yes, it is entirely true, Celtic didn't take any action, nor any of their supporters, It was a UEFA routine check. And "I believe the rules state that the opposing club must file a protest first before any match can be deemed a forfeit" - The rules say no such thing.

The actual rules: Also there's a quote from the Guardian newspaper (which is where I originally saw the info) which says: “Uefa’s disciplinary regulations decree that a match may be declared a forfeit if an ineligible player participates, “as long as the opposing team files a protest”.” You can find the Guardian article HERE - the exact quote is about 6-7 paragraphs down. So, yes, the rules do say such a thing. I'm not entirely sure how to interpret UEFA rules though in this instance because all it needed was a little bit of common sense. They have acted by the book and Legia definitely broke rules, I guess that's all that matters.

Just quickly - the rules don't say the opposing team have to file a protest: 14 b 1 is perfectly clear - participate after being suspended following a disciplinary decision - the match is forfeit.

This does Celtic a favour - I don't think they'd pick up a point in the group stages. The team is awful.
Derk Boerrigter is even worse than Samaras. Which is saying something. Celtics magic touch in the transfer market (Ki, Wanyama etc) has deserted them which gives them a big problem going forward. With Forster gone, they don't have anyone left that would command a decent transfer fee.

They were absolutely shit. They blew their chance by sitting back too much in the first leg. Thing is Maribor aren't really very good.

Ajax brought through, and were graced by, some of the best players in European football down the years. They created a footballing dynasty.
Celtic, er, haven't.
