For what it's worth, I've just had a brief look through some of Mark Hughes' line ups as Fulham manager, and it seems to suggest that he signed Sidwell to replace his holding midfielder Dickson Etuhu and played him alongside Danny Murphy.
Maybe Sparky thinks he can challenge Whelan for his position as well as N'Zonzi?

Unlike Whelan he scores a decent number of goals. Unlike Adam he can tackle. He is better then each of them in some respects. Personally, I think he's actually best in NZonzi's position - box to box - perhaps less accurate in his passing but a lot more goal threat. And unlike Whelan he's not a DM which is the reason he scores goals, so that's a stupid comparison to make. Anyway as back up I'm not complaining, be worried if he's coming in as a starter as he isnt anywhere near as good as N'Zonzi imo. I was replying to the poster (on a previous page) who had said he didn't want to sign Sidwell as he was less competent than Whelan or Adam. Like you, I think that is irrelevant as he is not the same type of player as either of them.

I think he'd be a fine squad player as a signing, especially on a free.

Palacios out, Sidwell in. Squad instantly upgraded. That'll do. But the starting team does not improve at all. It doesn't but we'd be easily covered if N'Zonzi or Whelan gets injured. To do well in any league, you have to have a good squad. You can't just have a great starting eleven.

But the starting team does not improve at all. Who are we going to sign in the midfield that's of a good age and affordable that will? Veratti

Better than a lot on here give him credit for. He will improve our midfield, good signing. I agree. Would be delighted if he joined. Solid player and has goals in him from midfield. Superb addition to the squad

Wouldn't be unhappy with this, very experienced with a few years left yet.

Cheap enough I suppose and that'll suit Coates down to the ground.

Stokes vision is well & truly clear, the purse has been thrown away. Fair Play if we pull of a consistent top 10 team on Bosmans, it's a shame TP wasted near £100 million it would of been interesting to see what Hughes could do with that sort of money now.

Or maybe we are using our money wisely. Bardsley Diouf Sidwell all on frees, upgrades the squad and also gives us more money to spend on other positions, such as wingers.

There's a few things becoming apparent for me
- Our image is improving. - Players appear to have a lot of respect for Hughes and want to play for him. - Were looking to shift Palacios.

Maybe these players are on a free but there could be an argument to have about are these players actually any better than we allready have when you look closely at them, it looks to me that any ambition the club has had has halted, it seems we are now content being in it for the money if you ask me. Would our current better players such as Begovic, Shawcross, Arnautovic & N'Zonzi be inspired by these 3 players, I don't think so, imo we should be aiming to bring in at least 1 top quality player a season that would walk into our first team without any doubt & so far I don't think any of three are.

Bardsley can help move Cameron into midfield. Sidwell in Palacios out. Diouf is a very good striker and will score goals.
All in all good upgrades.

Despite his success in Germany there is still questions as to wether he can cut it in English football, he didn't pull up any trees playing for Blackburn Rovers either in the English League. I happen to think he must have improved a lot as a player or Hughes wouldn't be interested but it's far from a given and he still has it all to prove over here imo.

I think we have to be realistic about who we can get and the type of players we should target. Hughes seems better at spotting talent than TP who went for safer bets who we often paid over the top for.

Not quite sure about that, Pulis could spot talent, e.g. Shawcross when none of us have ever heard of him. However, most of the time, he purchased tried and tested players as you said.

Decent signing if it comes off. So far i've been impressed with who we are going for. Save money where we can and then push the boat out for players like Capel, if it's true. Shrewd from Cartwright and Hughes. I think with a good strong squad we can aim to win a trophy

Would rather keep Nzonzi, would rather have Whelan as the holding midfielder. Would rather Adam or Ireland in the attacking role. Not a bad player, but not an improvement at all.

Absolutely which makes you wonder what Plan B would be. Riviere? Possibly but considering we're currently as tight as a duck's arse & he'll be talking to others as well I'm not very confident at all at present. We need goals and a striker more suited to Hughes' position & considering these pair are dirt cheap by Premier League transfer standards we are taking the piss in penny pinching for something we desperatley need, imo.
