The jury's out for me. I'll reserve judgment until I've seen him play a few games for us Why is the jury out? His stats are good for last season. By common consent he was Fulham's best player by a distance. And whenever I saw him on TV (and live at the Brit) he looked like he could still cut the mustard. Welcome the signing but I thought he was extremely average at the Britannia recently. If we can get WP off the books it makes sense.

So it seems Diouf will be completing in the next few days. Sidwell and Diouf in at the beginning of June for the princely transfer sum of erm....fuck all. I would like to know what them there pizza guzzling tossers in our recruitment team are playing at?? Whatever happened to good old fashioned last minute transfer windows where we snapped up £15m bargains like Crouch/Palacios??? I'm sure Sheiky will be along to let us know how wank this is, shortly.

I have no worries about these signings and from a purely financial point of view they appear good deals.
My problem though concerns the ever increasing level of transfer fees and wages and the way in which the top clubs are opening a bigger gap between themselves and others.
Finishing 9th in the league is great and doing it again next season will equally as good, but I do not like the fact that the points gap between the top few and the rest is getting bigger.
I cannot see in the short or longer term how this situation is healthy for the PL.

It isn't im afaid, but with the media being the way it is in both this country and in other countries and there big teams ( Chelsea, Manchester city Bayern Barcelona etc.) there shows no sign of stopping. The thing that annoys me the most are the "fans" in countries such as China US and so on who support the "big" clubs at the expense of there own teams in their own countries. Basically if your not winning the league or Champions league the media guided by the fair weather glory hunter ( you know the type) dont care.

It still comes a damn sight cheaper than the alternative earth moving methodology of buying anything that has been previously blessed by the hand of 'Arry.

We have to go back to the point at which teams like Stoke were excluded from the chance of winning the title, and see what changed.
It centres round money and the purchase of clubs by overseas billionaires and of course before that the abolition of the maximum wage.
Stoke historically could compete with Chelsea and Manchester City, today they can't, that needs to be corrected.

Its the way football is and I agree it bloody stinks but there isn't a lot you can realistically do about it. At the minute all teams like us can hope to do is give the big clubs a bloody nose every now and then and perhaps win a cup. Unless a super league is set up and the big clubs piss off thats all we can hope for. I don't think it's a lack of ambition it's just being a realist.

The only way teams like Stoke will stand a chance of winning the title again (barring a Saudi/Russian/Chinese gazillionaire taking a shine to oatcakes) is for the top 6/7 teams to bugger off to a full European league, leaving us as one of those left behind to play in the national league.

I don't think the people who run football at the highest level here and throughout the world want to change, but it could be changed for the better, perhaps falling attendances would be the trigger.
If I was to start going to Stoke again and forking out £30, or whatever, I would want to know we could win the title, otherwise what the hell is the point.

Stoke historically could compete with Chelsea and Manchester City, today they can't, that needs to be corrected. What about a maximum signing on fee and wage caps? Let's say no player can get more than £1M in signing on fees (maybe too high!), and every club could only pay their best three paid players around £50 000, the next three £40 000, the next three £30 000, and the rest of the players £20 000. This system would ensure you would earn more as the top earner at a small club in the PL intead of earning enormous sums just sitting on the bench for the bigger clubs as the system is today!

Absolutely, anything that prevents the gross unfairness of the modern game.
You know Stoke could have won the title in the 70's, we need that chance back again.
Chelsea are not that much bigger than Stoke, it's just one mans money.

I was quite surprised that we signed him , having read that Palace (apparently he is a Palace fan), West Ham and Southampton were other interested parties. Is this a sign that we are now seen as an attractive choice due to our change in style, or is it as he seems to suggest the Hughes factor?. Either way it's good news for us.

Stokes vision is well & truly clear, the purse has been thrown away. Fair Play if we pull of a consistent top 10 team on Bosmans, it's a shame TP wasted near £100 million it would of been interesting to see what Hughes could do with that sort of money now. nonsense, didn't waste £100 million, look at the value of the squad, Pulis bought assets that the club continues to benefit from. You clearly don't understand economics or finance. We were promoted with no assets and had to build our squad, others had been more frequent vistiors to the Premiership and so had an exiting asset base,. £3m for Begovic, £5m for Huth, £1m for Shawcross, £3m for Ethers, £3m for Cameron, Butland for £4m, £3m for Walters, Wilson £4m, Adam £4m, N'Zonzi £3m -all great deals and all but Ethers now worth more, probably £55-65m resale value in today's market. Add in swap of Wingy for Jones, no loss on Tuncay, potential fees from Kightly and Shea, the net cost of 5 years in the Premiership is about £20m, which after tax benefits for value depreciation is even smaller and almost irrelevant against the revenue generated Rubbish, he may of bought assests but he also spunked a shit load up the wall. MH & his team have imo shown Tony Pulis' transfer strategies & tiny potential target pool up for what it is, shit. Pulis bought in Ryan & Begovic granted, If both were sold we would probably get £25 million at the top end. Where are these other assests you speak of and how much are they likely to sell for???? Since Hughes, his team & his strategies & contacts have been put into place Stoke have bought in Arnautovic, Odemwinge, Assaidi on loan, Bardsley, Sidwell, Ireland, Muniesa & now possibly Diouf for no more than £9million. Pulis spent £18m on Crouch & Palacios & we will be lucky to recoup anything from thenm so don't tell me Pulis didn't waste money.

I would like to see Stoke win the PL, the present structure prevents it, I'm amazed people are so complacent and accepting of this. What do you suggest to change it? It requires a radical change to the financial set up of the game at the very top - transfer fee caps, wage caps, shared gate receipts, maximum ticket price and changes to the agent system. Sadly, the game is ruled by people whose interests are entirely contrary to this sort of radical change, so it'll never happen. On the topic of Steve Sidwell, however, I'm quite happy that he's signed.

At least we're signing Sunderland first teamers now. Surely progression from the reserves? Signings may look good on paper but football, nowadays at Stoke City, is played on grass. Proof will come this coming season.

The best players will still want to play for the more glamorous teams. Another team might win it the odd year but it wouldn't work and quite frankly it would be boring as hell.

I would say that is the greatest bargain in our history!! March, the club operated at a net loss during TP's time at the club. It also operated at a loss during the times of most of the previous managers but don't rewrite history to make it sound as if The club had more income than it spent during TP's time - unless, of course, you are accusing the Coates family of false accounting!

Peter Coates decided Stoke City F.C were to become a Premiership club, my opinion is TP was the chosen one, he was a very lucky man who would of been the envy of many a Premiership manager as he spent £25 million every year to make it happen, it is/was unheard of for a newly promoted club.
