I just wanted to restore a bit of balance to the top of this Message Board. Seeing the various thread titles containing “Tony Pulis”, “Crystal Palace” et al. I thought it timely to remind everyone that this is a Stoke City Message Board.
Anyway, I digress. Who’s looking forward to the away trip to Cardiff on Saturday? They’re fighting for their lives so the home fans will be in full voice. We’ll also be in party mode given our recent run of form and surge up the league so it all bodes well for an amazing atmosphere and brilliant away day. We’ll be there in numbers too with only a handful of tickets left, with over 2,000 already being sold. It should be a great day out and another opportunity to get more points on the board.
We’re on course to break the record of our highest ever points tally in the Premier League and securing our first ever top 10 finish to boot. Most fans expected a period of time for transition before real progress was realised but Hughes has blown that out of the water and been an instant success; it’s an incredible time to be a Stokie!! The football is much improved and significantly more entertaining that it has been for years and we now have a side that possesses a genuine cutting edge and a Manager prepared to give them the freedom to express themselves and free rein to go out and play on the front foot. This campaign has been a breath of fresh air and has injected much needed impetus and optimism amongst the fans once again, after finding ourselves firmly in a rut at the end of last season. Expectation levels are rising again and there is a genuine buoyancy when looking forward to the next term under the leadership of Mark Hughes.
“He’s a shit manager, look at the QPR debacle….”, “We’re ruined, he’s taking us down….”, “We’ve lost our identity….” – all that nonsense has been kicked into touch and Hughes has proven all the (knee-jerk) critics wrong. The feel-good factor is back and Season Ticket sales for next year have gone through the roof.
It’s been a fantastic campaign and there are still 4 winnable games left to make it even more special, starting on Saturday in South Wales.
Let’s be at our vocal best and give the Manager and Players the reception they deserve for a job thoroughly well done.
Be Loyal, Be Proud, Be Stoke.

You can't get over the fact that Mark Hughes's name is sung louder and by more fans than it ever was for that Welsh tool we had previously.

That is because Rimmers are happy to sing it. There are no where near as many HHWs.

I am happy with the job Les is doing and hope he is around for a long time to come. I just hope Cartwright does not lumber him with too many players like Brek Shea, any manager would struggle with a squad full of players of that standard

....anyway, let me respond to the secondary reason of the original thread. I thought a good manager (whether it was Pulis or not) who made the right signings could get us into the top 10 but thought it more likely we would get someone that would threaten us with relegation. Hughes has proved to be that manager with an excellent showing of late and has only been overshadowed by Rodgers and Pulis. That said, my expectation levels will not rise for next year and I will keep a realistic mindset.

I wouldn't say he's been overshadowed, but it depends in what context you mean.
The papers have certainly been creaming themselves over Rodgers recently, and he probably deserves the Manager of the Year accolade; especially if they go onto clinch the league.
Pulis has received plenty of plaudits at Palace recently too (and deservedly so) but Hughes has had his share too - not just for the results, but for the style of play he has implemented. We're finally getting credit for playing in a more entertaining way and the fans have responded.

In the context that he gets more points per game than Hughes has this year and that he saved a club that was dead on its feet.

On the other hand, Hughes is on course to acheieve things that Pulis couldn't during his time at the club and he has turned around the fortunes of a team that was stuck in a massive rut and on a downward spiral.

you are comparing Hughes to what has been done at Stoke before rather than his peers this year.
we weren't on a downward spiral. just had a tough year that was not aided by the club failing to back him in the last window despite backing him extremely well in previous ones.

Arrrrrrr poor tone, if only he was given £20 million every season he could've become one of the games true greats. Coates out!!!!!

"you are comparing Hughes to what has been done at Stoke before rather than his peers this year." - compared to his peers this year, he's guided his team to 10th spot in the league.
"just had a tough year that was not aided by the club failing to back him in the last window despite backing him extremely well in previous ones." - Hughes hasn't exactly been backed extremely well this year, and he's delivered progress. Imagine if he had tens of millions to spend like his predecessor?

Hughes picked up a team in 13th place and we are 10th Pulis was 19th or 20th? and now 11th Enough about Pulis though, just because he is an even better manager than I thought he was we need to move on... I think Hughes did have tens of millions to spend but couldn't spend it.....and proved he didn't even need it. Cannot fault Hughesy one bit of late.

Be Loyal, Be Proud, Be Stoke. Did this happen under the old manager? And that's why you get it my friend.
This time last year, some of us were being loyal, proud and Stoke, and some of us preferred to use words like axe, out and despicable.
It feels a bit rich to get a lecture on this subject now.
It's not the relative merits of the last 2 Stoke City managers that rankles, it's the hypocrisy and back sliding that we read that sticks in your craw.

"Some of us were being loyal, proud and Stoke" - I think the majority were loyal, proud and Stoke, in all honesty. There's always a minority mind. Just as there are a minority now that seem hellbent on focussing on a rival team in the league.

Mate, I respect your view, but we must have different definitions for "loyal" and "proud", because I read some fairly bitter bile about the club that I support.
Not many are focussing on Palace either. There are a few people on here who are pleased that our former manager is enjoying some success and perhaps are surprised at this having been told what a useless clown he was for the last 12 months. Or 10 years in some cases.

Personally I don;t think Hughes has blown anything out of the water. While he has not done a bad job this season we have hardly excelled but there are signs of better things to come. We are still 5 points away from beating our highest total of points. Things have changed for sure, we have now played pretty poorly for 3 straight games but won 2 of them. In seasons past we probably would have lost all 3 so the win 3 then lose 3 we used to do under Pulis seems to have stopped. Some people seem to forget the bad first half to the season under our new manager, but as I said, it seems what he is trying to do is taking effect. Playing to win instead of playing not to lose is also another thing we seem to be doing. So playing to WIN our final 4 games WOULD put a good stamp on our season !
