Didn't MON say he would not be returning to management and wants to spend more time with the family. He said he wants to spend more time with The Family? No wonder the bookies stopped taking bets.

Short bought the club when it had been sorted out by Quinn and co, MON did not like the yanks sticking there nose into team selection etc (same at villa) the yanks what to run clubs like american baseball teams, cheap head lines, directors of this and that, they see the premership as another franchise or money spinner not as clubs for supporters I've never seen so much shite in one post, and I'm a regular on RTG. - As much as Quinn is a legend around Sunderland, but most are pleased he is no longer chairman, he's too much of a 'nice guy' to be chairman
- Short has NEVER, NEVER meddled with anyting regarding team selections.
- Short, as CaptFishpaste said, has been nothing but brilliant. He has pumped funds in, and without him this season we'd have been relegated.

Would O'Neil be able to tempt Heskey back to the Premier League?

When I said di Matteo was bottom of my list, it was only because I never even thought that O'Neil would be in the frame.
Massive backwards step from TP.

O'Neill is, I'm sure, a complete red herring based solely on Collymore's erroneous tweet.
We wouldn't get rid of TP to bring in the only other dino-manager still roaming the managerial earth.

What aspect of MON fits the profile though, March.
A 60-year-old who does no coaching, buys pretty much exclusively expensive British players, coming off one almighty (and one moderate) failure in his last 2 jobs and plays shit football.
He doesn't tick any boxes for a bright new dawn, does he?

We don't have a squad for a Martinez type manager. If we want to change our style we have to take steps and MON, given 2 or 3 years could be the right choice at this time.

I'm not sure that's really true though. At the moment, I don't think we have the squad for any type of manager. Have we really got a core group of players that couldn't adapt? I think that's a bit of a myth. We're going to need 2 new full-backs, 2 new wingers, at least one CM and 1 forward. And players like Adam, Nzonzi, Cuvelier, Wilson, Crouch aren't hoofers by nature. It looks as good a time as ever for a pretty radical overhaul. We're going to see that radical personnel overhaul with 5-6 coming in anyway. So they may as well learn a new manager's philosophy as any version of Pulisball lite The ones who'll see the biggest change are Huth and Shawcross. But they've come through the ranks at Man Utd and Chelsea, so I'm sure they didn't always look for a 50-yard ping up to the big man.

Dougie freedman 14's at bet victor, mostly 40/50's everywhere else. WD stuck a tenner on? I reckon we will have a new man this time next week. Hopefully a new name drops into the frame by then.

Why is Fishpaste getting such a savaging. As far as I can work out, as a Mackem, he's going to have some worthwhile views on MON as a potential successor to Pulis. Fishpaste, ignore all this nonsense. What do you reckon to MON potentially coming to Stoke?Just don't see it mate. I'll always have a soft spot for MON and was a bit gutted with how it went for him at Sunderland. We'll never know what would have happened for him here, but he was struggling badly. Always seemed dejected and questioning himself. It was tough to watch. May be he could recapture his old magic again, who knows. I certainly wouldn't be writing him off. His failure at 'his' club may well have re-lit his fire and drive. That said, him to Stoke would make no sense at all. He has plenty to offer, but a commitment to bringing through youth and finding value in the transfer market isn't it. In fact, he often named just 6 subs rather than involving academy players. He said he 'didn't want them to think they had made it', which is just plain weird. In the transfer market he went with a mix of expensive (yet very good) domestic signings such as Johnson and Fletcher and grizzled vets on free transfers (Saha and Cuellar). Alfred N'Diaye was some real value from abroad, but he was very much the exception. He just doesn't seem to fit with any of Stoke's criteria. He won't develop young players, he will spend big sums on single players, and we won't bring much resale value. I'd be genuinely astonished if he was even being considered.

I really like douggie freedman. He did a great job at Palace and has done a good job turning Boltons fortunes round this season too. Being in the championship he's poach able but the fact he's not long been at Bolton is a negative. It's probably bullshit but there was an article in the People today saying Laudrup is falling out with the Swansea board over lack of funds and that he's already told them he will be off at the end of next season. Now if we could persuade him to jump ship i think he's an appointment that everyone could get behind! I still think there is a trump card up our sleeve and we could see a left field appointment.

Always an odd kind of process as a fan when you are looking for a new manager. Since you appointed Pulis, I think I have seen six new appointments at Sunderland. There is always that inclination to set your heart on that perfect candidate, the one who ticks all the boxes, and renders everyone else 'just won't do'. You start over-analysing everything and before you know it your excitement over the change has gone and you find yourself gripped with fear and feeling sick at the prospect of someone you don't like getting the job. In the end, you are just looking for the least imperfect as opposed to the most perfect. I'd like to think that the age of the merry-go-round is over now. The same old names have had enough chances, and it's time clubs got imaginative again. Di Canio and Pochettino saved Sunderland and Southampton, for example, whilst Laudrup delivered a trophy to Swansea. Meanwhile, Redknapp took QPR down with a pathetic wimper and had no impact at all despite spending massively. That said, I do think that Mark Hughes would be a very astute appointment IF you can get assurance from him to disassociate himself from Kia Joorabchian. Before Joorahchian, Hughes built teams properly and unearthed some absolute gems. After Joorachian, I suspect he'll do the same.

I cannot believe SCFC would agree to remove Pulis without a nailed on replacement, so they have probably been going through the motions as Companies do sometimes when they get applicants, knowing who they want. So they have just been dotting the "I's" and crossing the "T's". Being involved in Bet365 does make it awkward on insider dealing, but someone will be making a killing who is not far removed from the inner sanctum.

You, shotbybothsides(wolves)and staffsvilla are always welcome in my opinion. Interesting post anyway. I really do think o'neill would be more suited to the wolves job (or similar) to be fair. I want to see a guy come in who will be here for at least 5 years, seen too much shit over the years for us to get this one wrong mate. I'm really excited by the future and would love us to bring in someone with a bit of vision and new ideas, for me that would be one of the younger managers out there. It's a risk but we took a risk on pulis, twice and didn't do too bad out the deal

I'd take Hughes over O'Neill any day of the week.
It'd be interesting to see whether he has any humility from his QPR experience. His arrogance is what I don't like but I think his football would be an improvement on the last couple of years. QPR for me is a clusterfuck primarily caused by the owners rather than Hughes. I'd be surprised if he had that much input into most of the signings.
Not exactly the young, vibrant, change in direction that the club is talking about.

I think that MON would be a safe option
However, his appointment would signal more of a sideways step than a forward one
He certainly isn't the manager to take the club in "a new direction" in my opinion
