He's having a shocker. Goes missing at the back, everytime Pennant gives him the ball you can guarantee its a Kiev break, and that 'clearance' before the break!!!

Not good enough, sorry.
He'll run through a wall for you I'll give him that much, but he gets beat too easily.

He adds so much more of an attacking element to our side don't you think. Pennant having one of his best games why? Shotton... Also their goal came from the middle (Palacious and Diao not tracking back) but then the biggest defending mistake was Higgy (didn't close him down) NOT Shotton. So if none of their attacks came from their left (Shotton) then why did he defend badly maybe your Subject should read Higgy?

He was by far our best player in the first half!

I'll be honest, i don't think he's all he's cracked up to be either. He's a decent enough player but nowhere near as good as some make him out to be. His defending always seems last gasp (which looks great but smacks of a lack of concentration to me) He's very frustring going forward too. Ruins a lot of good situations in attacking areas.

I'm actually in the middle of both of your opinions. I don't think he was as good as he normally is at going forward but had a very decent game defensively.

I like him however I'm still not quite sure what's his best position. Full back or out wide. He's very useful however I think I prefer Wilson.

Better in the 2nd half. Thought first half he simply wasn't getting back quick enough, if at all, and was leaving a big gap. I like an attacking defender but not if that means he neglects his main duties.
Maybe Tony had a word at half time as he seemed to get the balance better in the 2nd half.

He gets himself on the overlap really well but doesn't seem to know what to do once he gets there. His final ball is rotten and his defending leaves something to be desired, although I thought he did reasonably well tonight. He's not a bad back up at RB but I don't think he'll ever make the grade, although I thought the same of Wilko a couple of years ago and he has proven me wrong.

My man of the match tonight. Not scared put his foot in, good going forward, links up well with Jermaine, decent cross and strong. Positional play his biggest problem though.

Well if Shotton is not good enough we can safely get rid of at least another 15 members of the squad too ! Leave the lad alone he is making really good progress.

Thought he played well tonight. Made one or two mistakes, but he's much better at right back than out-wide.

Thought he was our best player by some distance.
Certainly not the finished article but not sure how he can be criticised on tonight's showing?

He did well, but does stray out of position at times. Wouldn't disagree about some of his positional play but for enthusiasm and endeavor he scored top marks tonight (and he made a few excellent challenges to boot.)

I don't see how it's bizarre mate. It's not bizarre, just a different opinion to yours. My opinion is he wasted the ball in attacking positions on quite a few ocassions tonight. He did well defensively, but as i've said in a previous post, i worry that his defending always seems last gasp. I put this down to concentration levels. Hopefully that will improve with experience. Decent player, but not good enough for a place in our 'best' 11 for me.

He'd be alright as back up for right wing, but didn't impress me at all at right back. Hopefully prove me wrong but I'd doubt he could make it in the prem. He could be an ace champ player for someone though.

Not surprised he was a little jaded second half, he spent most of the first trying to make up for the total failure of both Jones and Palacios to give Pennant any passing option. JP rightly pissed off if everytime you receive the ball all tour team mates start playing traffic cones.

He's potentially a top player in the making, he needs more and more game time to sort out his positional play, personally I'd send him on loan in jan to get some regular match experience

He did well, but does stray out of position at times. Wouldn't disagree about some of his positional play but for enthusiasm and endeavor he scored top marks tonight (and he made a few excellent challenges to boot.) He was playing against top opposition in a game to qualify for the last 32 in Europe and did not look out of place at all for large parts of the game. Tried to be positive with the ball and supported JP who returned the compliment as usual. We looked solid enough down the right it was just the middle and left handisde where we went missing for the second part of the first half. Much better second half all round. that game will be invaluable experience for Ryan. I hope.

Geez.... Must have been a different shotten I was watching! I thought he did well, especially against a side that were technically superior on the ball and played intricate triangles and quick movement. Don't get me wrong, he's not the finished article but I saw a lot of positives from his game :-)
But we all have our own point of view :-)

Especially playing behind the bone idle bastard that is Jermaine Pennant. One decent cross apart he was utter gash and spent the whole game complaining about perfectly decent passes that he couldn't be arsed to move for, one of which led to their goal.
