Good move by the FA in my opinion. The sooner they crack down on these scumbags the better. About time the FA started sticking up for the officials and footy fans and stop letting arseholes like Rooney and Ferguson get away with murder (figuratively speaking). Could have swore that didn't happen on the pitch and Chelsea are dealing with that themselves. Are you saying that Cole should have a ban over a training ground incident and it compares to Rooney's action ON the pitch? Surely not Perhaps he should have shot someone instead? The FA have no problem with that.

Why not just let him copulate with a prostitute of his choice in the centre circle at half time..... or perhaps have a shit in the 18 yard box...? Why bother having rules....? Lets just ramble on... If he had swore at the ref/linesman then yeah ban him. But he didn't. Players should be allowed to swear on the pitch as long as it's not in contempt of authority. Yes...of course thats okay ....there was only 2 billion people watching...

We were singing a song with the word "shagging" in it. Again should be fined and banned. It's exactly the same, the camera can hear it. It's football for crying out loud, swearing happens. As long as it's not at the ref (from the players I may add ;D ) then it's fine.

Laughable! Will clubs allow camera's pitchside now if this will happen? It's typical bumbling from the FA. And we are drawn to some guidelines by the club that foul and abusive language isn't permitted in the stadium.

I don't get why it's so difficult for some people on here to differentiate between a player that everyones focusing on swearing directly down a camera in front of millions of people and singing a song in the crowd that no one outside off the stadium can really understand or are bothering to pay attention to. Are you seriously saying that what Rooney did is comparable to any swearing a fan does in the ground? Also, if you think it's okay then where do you draw the line, if any?.. When players start shouting 'cunt' or 'i fucked your mothers arse' down the camera or towards opposition fans? Footballers are paid to play under FA rules and are rightly expected to abide by these rules and set a good example to younger children who emulate them. Not only did Rooney embarrass himself, but he personifies exactly what is wrong with youth culture in Britain today. Rooney has great talent and the opportunity to set a good example to kids all over the globe (like Messi does - or even players like Delap). It's just a shame he has the mentality of these Z list celebs like Jordan and Kerry Katona. He makes me sick.

Yes! It all can be heard so what's the difference? Because that's why the FA have banned him because it was down a tv camera and millions heard, just like singing football songs! If a player shouts cunt and it's not aimed at the ref, what's the problem? The line is if it's aimed at the officials.
It is a stupid act but people are acting like he's murdered someone. Ring the Daily Mail Tarquin, I'm outraged!

It may not be the crime of the century, but he knows better than to do what he did and as a result he deserves to be punished. Here are the regulations, taken from the BBC website: FA rules state: " A participant shall at all times act in the best interests of the game and shall not act in any manner which is improper or brings the game into disrepute or use any one, or a combination of, violent conduct, serious foul play, threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour." Doesn't specify who the behaviour is towards and it's pretty clear that Rooney overstepped the mark.

Rooney's knobbish swearing, the dumbest FA charge, the tedious outrage in response - some days football just leaves you cold A Tweet from the Guardian sports editor sums it up for me. He was stupid but he shouldn't be banned for it. Ahh yes the rules that are always fully abided by That's another issue, the damn right hypocrisy shown by the FA. I don't think he did overstep the mark. He's just foolish but in the heat of the moment these things happen.

A ban is the only way you can punish footballers and managers as fines obviously don't work.
Best thing he could do when he next plays is apologise directly to the camera but being the prick that he is, he'll probably follow Fergies lead and childisly refuse to talk to the media from now on.

Players have this 'we can do the hell we like' mentality, that is being followed by kids all over the country. Whether the FA is hypocritical or not is another issue. I just worry about the people who think this and abusing referees is ok. They are probably the same kind of people who think it is ok for their kids to abuse teachers, and that's why the society we live in is so dysfunctional.

That's the whole hypocritical essence of it! It's made the FA look like fools. How many times has Rooney told refs to fuck off and got away with it? They're making the rules up as they go along.

How does that make it OK? Hopefully they will now start enforcing the rules. The fact they haven't so far doesn't make this right. They should tell Rooney and everybody else that telling an official to fuck off is now a straight red. If you think players get carried away in the heat of the moment, then I disagree. They choose to do it. I'll bet that they'll stop doing it after the first dismissal.

I don't have much of a problem with what he did on Saturday, because young people hear swearing at football all the time from other supporters anyway, but have more than a problem with it when he elbows people in the face. Macarthy, Abdoulaye at the Brit 2008/09 etc.

And I'm not saying it makes it ok, that's missing the point. It's the fact that they've basically only done it because it was to a tv camera. They still haven't taken a stance to eradicate it to officials, in fact they've done nothing about it. And that I do think that is wrong. Of course they do, I've done it myself whilst watching/playing football. And then regretted later and wondered just what the hell I was doing. The FA just look stupid here because they haven't solved anything. Another tweet that sums it up better than I can, this time from zonal marking, a football tactics website. Never has TV hold on football been so blatant. Tell a player to eff off, no charge. Say it to a ref, no charge. To a TV camera? Oooh, charge

Is 'bloody' still a swear word? Arse? Frig?

I have to disagree with you on this one. Im not saying ban swearing from football, far from it. Its a passionate game and im sure 99% of players swear at some point. However, the context in which Rooney did it is undefendable in my eyes. There was absolutely no need whatsoever to do what he did and id bet my life that no other premier league player would react in that way. Just because its Wayne Rooney and hes a "bad lad" does not excuse what he did.
To put it in a nutshell, the guy is a complete dickhead who is so so lucky to have been born with a gift otherwise hed be in prison or drinking cider in the local park (which he used to do on a regular basis before he was a footballer).
He has no class and it is stuff like this that makes me despise the national team. I just cant stand the likes of rooney, terry, lampard, cashley cole et al. They dont know theyre born.
