Longton is perfect! I like bits of Hanley but on the whole it's a big 60's shithole. Typical of Stoke they knocked down a good proportion of the decent architecture and replaced it with shite. I love the Webberly's building, it's good architecture imo and Hanley needs more of it. Hopefully this will be a start in good arrchitectual practises in Hanly and the city in general.

perhaps they can knock down the chavy little ten-men tossers drinking out of bottles from 9am and wearing 3/4 length trackie bottoms and 45 degree caps too?

A night out in Hanley is the most depressing prospect ever. I live just outside Hanley but would rather pay the extra to go to 'castle. A far cry from the halcyon days of the 90s, when Thursdays up Hanley were better than the weekend now. RIP The Void

Just went the bank and back and thought I'd just question the commitment and scale of the regeneration plans. So then, this is (so far) what lucky visitors will benefit from by visiting Stoke-on-Trent. 1- Re-Tarmaced strips of road that cover pedestrian crossing. 2- Brand new lampposts that advertise Wedgewood- a company that seem to be struggling even after the many redundancies there. And wait for it.... 3- Another fucking Tesco. Becuase the world needs another Tesco. So is this a sign of our imaginative council, or the first of a huge list that will pull in outside visitors and benefit the good people of Stoke on Trent? Yes....A great forward thinking regeneration plan if ever there was one.

While there have been some interesting points made, i think that most are overlooking the most obvious. Stoke on Trent is a piss poor area and has been since its inception. Developers need a return, per capita income in North Staffs is one of the lowest in the country, ergo the per capita spend will be one of the lowest in the country. Regeneration is set to fail even if done on a small scale, look at Burslem. People with money are able to travel to the better serviced areas, poor people have the bus and will stay local (Longton,Hanley & Tunstall). Unfortunatly the current problems run much deeper than a poor council, which will undoubtebly worsen as gov subsidies and job cuts take their toll. If the Gov of the day leaves us to sink or swim i think we can all work out which way it will go. The potteries have suffered net emigration since the 50's. because of low wages, not only weakening its economic strength but also its intelectual strength.

Hanley is a fucking shit hole. Portland Street and Century Street and the surrounding area needs flattening. It's a rotting festering pit of crime, drugs and prostitution.
Whilst I'm at it, I'd say be done with the 6 towns too, get rid of them, we don't need them. We need to build one centre and properly, just like other cities, and start a main transport link to the one city for outside areas.
Fair enough Stoke is unique for having 6 towns....so what?! It doesn't attract anyone to the city. Who in the right mind would say "oh yea, Stoke-on-Trent, thats the place with 6 towns isn't it? Let's go visit" Most people I know who aren't from round here would happily use extra petrol to avoid travelling through Stoke-on-Trent.
We have no generation....flatten the old derelict buildings, who gives a fuck if they used to be pot banks? We were known for our Pottery 150 fucking years ago, we need to move on with the times. I visit other cities, then come back here and its so frustrating.
Just my opinions like....but yeah.

That cladding for the Premier Inn weathers at a vast rate, it'll look horrid within a year. Still better than wasteland though...

That looks good hopefully it'll work out. BUT why the handstand?? Also what employment will people have to ensure they have the income to spend at the retail outlets? Is the intention to attract people from surrounding areas like Cheshire and Derbyshire??

That looks good hopefully it'll work out. BUT why the handstand?? It's Mohammed Pervez, doing cartwheels over his new, shiny, unneccesary white elephant council HQ, which he's somehow managed to find the budget for whilst the Council tries to fill a gaping black hole in it's finances. YCNMIU.

Somebody's doing a handstand in the new Hanley Business District? ;D ;D ;D I saw this, did you not not its commonplace in Stoke to do random Handstands when you're shopping? You should try it. It all looks shiny on paper and architects drawings, but will it look that good in reality, I'm not sure.

Whatever it looks like in reality it's got to be a damn site better than what's there right now! So far I'm pretty impressed with the plans and the speed at which they seem to be implimenting them (now anyway, it's obviously years overdue). They seem to be targeting the right bits too, the old bus station, Broad Street and the old Unity House area, more of the wasteland near Tesco is due to be built on etc.

Why did they knock the old ABC cinema down for the new Tesco and now all it is more derelict land?

Might be worth expanding the regeneration into Shelton too by clearing some of the shit terraces.

I think it's part of the 'University Quarter' development, a lot of the terraces around the College Road area are earmarked to be demolised at some point to make way for further expansion of the University and integration with Stoke College. I just hope that if they do demolish the terraces they actually follow through with the redevelopment and not leave streets of wasteland like they have in other areas where terraces have been demolised and the money ran out for the redevelopment e.g. the area off Lichfield Street and around Botteslow Street.

Yay, more knocking down decent enough terraced houses and then leaving the land empty.
If there was a signed and sealed legal contract that they'd do it, it would be excellent. But it would be a fuck up. I can't see the City Central thing working either. I hope I'm wrong.

It needs some half decent hotels. Noone is going to come and visit if the only option they've got is the Moat House. Premier Inn is the start.

Leisure complex due to open on land between Premier Inn and the Old Plough later this year Tennants are Nando’s, Bella Italia and TGI Friday’s with the latter two currently having no chains in Staffordshire. www.stokesentinel.co.uk/10-million-Hanley-leisure-development-set-create/story-25929858-detail/story.htmlWhile I'm really not excited about the prospect of yet another Nando's, it's great to see a piece of land that's been derelict for 15 years being regenerated, especially on a stretch which often forms visitor's first impressions of the city.
