Why aren't they made to stand there and belt it out at the top of their voices? Surely this would give you a massive adrenaline rush from the pride? It really pissed me off last night watching the majority of them facing the floor or just quietly wording it to themselves!!! SING WITH PASSION, PLAY WITH PASSION. Rant over.

The Russians seem to do their national anthem well, always reminds me of the rocky film.

Good call Stoney, some of the Rugby lads are crying with passion while they sing. Most of the footballers look like they don't even want to be standing there never mind sing. Maybe with the team being run by foreigners doesn't help. Sadly, national identity is dying in football with club football becoming more important.

James was the only one really singing it but in fairness the Spanish players were hardly belting it out were they.

Agreed, not the best English Rugby team at the moment but watch them belt out the anthem on Satdee ;D

The English national anthem is a song of praise to the monarch and not the country so why should anyone want to sing it!!

I hate this bollox playing the national anthem - if it is before a football game or more pathetic , winning a medal etc. The crying and passion shit is crap. Why the f$ck get passionate over a stupid song?
'God save the Queen'?????????????? Explain please? Are we talking England here ?

Probably because the National Anthem is the most pathetic tune and verse ever written

I wouldn't sing it, the royal family can f*ck off, pointless inbred anachronism.
I'd sing something like Land of Hope and Glory. It's about representing my country and the people in it not some privileged dimwit in Buckingham Palace.
Grrrrrrrrrr.

pjbo1957 - you are totally right, the tune is terrible and the words even worse. Couldn't agree more with beagriestache, this England we are talking about and so the "anthem" if we sing it at all should be English. The disaster of a song that is God Save the Queen is the British national anthem - you don't see Scotland singing it at the beginning of a match, why not, cos they sing a "Scottish" anthem. It should be Land of Hope and Glory just like at Commonwealth games.
Agree that we want the players to have passion but why should they when the song is utter garbage and means nothing?

Would prefer Jerusalem myself - national pride without mindless patriotism, and a decent tune.

Personally, I have no problem with having a monarch (even though "her" anthem is the crappiest of tunes and has silly words) but for the life of me I can't see why the ENGLISH football team should sing the BRITISH anthem of praise to a BRITISH monarch before a game.
If we are to have anthems before games (and every country does) then it should be an ENGLISH anthem - Jerusalem would be my front runner but there are plenty of of others we could choose (I vow to thee my country, Land of Hope and Glory etc.) Perhaps we should have a reality show on English TV and vote on the contenders! ;D
