I'm with Nick1984, never sung it, never will, and I don't stand up for it either. If any of the bastards get anywhere near me, they can kiss my hand and bow to me.

A hypothetical question:
I don't believe in god, I can't see the point of the royal family, I'm playing for England and being asked to sing the British (not English) national anthem to a tune is as jaunty and inspiring as a funeral march.
Do I:
A) Ball it out regardless of my personal views just to make everyone happy
B) Look bemused and a little baffled at the stupidity of the situation
I don't think its a matter of patriotism or pride in playing for England. It's just really hard to make sense of having to sing something so easy to disagree with.
And anyway my vote goes to "Jerusalem". Now that really does stir the blood. OK god gets a plug and Blake was high on something but..
Bring me my bow of burning gold Bring me my arrows of desire Bring me my spears o'clouds unfold Bring me my chariot of fire
c'mon...

Just saying that people who equally want to have a rant about god save the queen want to think about what delilah actually means to stoke fans lyrics wise it doesnt really mean anything its actually what the song means to people. Jerusalem still contains the word 'God', and implies that it belongs to God rather than the evolved residents who share DNA with chimps. THIS, as an atheist, offends me Seriously though, along with Land of Hope and Glory are inspiring sounding tunes, but the lyrics just sound so stupid in the modern world. Surely there's someone in this country capable of producing an anthem that can fit in with an classical tune, the EU anthem is to the tune of Beethoven but has lyrics that reflect the good things about the modern era.

Just as a tester, it would be interesting to know the ages of the ANTI national anthem posters on here, if for one would be suprised if any of them were over the age of 30 and none of them had served time in the armed forces.....over to you fellas

Not served in the armed forces, but can't see the relevance of that.

It was just a thought back to the old Home Internationals for people old enough to remember them, when the Jocks used to invade Wembley every other year and it was an embarassment to be English in them days. Now at least we have an anthem to draw us all together and we have our own flag (although we have had since time began ! ) Gone is the Union Jack and the Cross of St George as took over, as for the Armed forces.... maybe its me, but it makes you proud to hear the national anthem be it drilled into ya while you are in the Army or I,m just a sentimental old fool.

Brilliant!!! Oh for an English footballer with the passion of Welsh forward A.W.Jones!!!!!! i fail to see how singing the national anthem will make the players play any better. Look at beckham, he never knew any of the words and still had more passion than any other player on the pitch.

Rule Britannia refers to Britain (Britannia) and not England so it is illogical to have it as an English Anthem. By gum your up your own arse aren't you?
