Where is the line drawn and who decides how it is drawn? This is the key question and the reason i started the thread, If/When these people are convicted then the police, with the aid of CCTV, could be knocking on anyone of our doors after a game. This, in effect, is a test case and if it results in convictions and life time bans you can imagine the field day the police with have, I for one am worried. I'm with you 100% Glyn.

Paul I don't do offensive chants though I have been known to swear at various refs/players I'm not keen on offensive chants but I am less bothered with one crowd having a go at another The ManU chant relates to an acccident that is just an historical event to most - only a few of the familes will be personally upset by the chant - and then it will soon be forgotten As to the Cambell chant, if the players is still having mental problems then that chant could have a very detrimental effect on him I do accept that the legal people will have a problem making a charge stick but if it makes a few numpties tone down their abuse then we will all benefit (exc mcf but he is a special case himself )

Glynburton - that is the point i was hinting at with my purile post about "baldy slapheads". Whilst I find what was sung at Portsmouth disgusting, I have my concept of what is OK as has everyone else, but where will it all end ? There is a new 'nazi' style of PC correctness that has swept this country over the last few years that has intimidated most people into not giving their own opinions, racist or homophobic , pc or not, my problem is that any debate is being washed over because people dare not speak. For the record, I detest racists, but everyone has the right to speak there minds even if it's just so we know who the knob heads are!

Bristol Mick - have 'horrible' songs and chants always been a part of football? Has football always existed in a moral vacuum? Of course it f**king hasn't.

It's not about a few numpties. It's not about toning down abuse. And if you think it's okay to sing the Runway Song, then I'm pretty confident that you're higly unlikely to be part of the 'we' that benefits, if these charges are allowed to stick.

Paul
Not really sure what you're point is
Mine is that if the abuse could be damaging to an individual then it should be banned
I didn't say that the runway song is ok but that it didn't bother me and is of course meant to annoy the opposition fans rather than target one person
And yes it is always a few numpties who dream up the Cambell type abuse and a small group who start it. And if the singers get done then they get what they deserve - as I said it may make some people think before starting more abuse
And yes it could have wider implications but I am sure that the authorities will continue to turn a blind eye to most of this stuff whatever happens

Its all a load of fucking bollocks. The whole point of going to football could be killed as the police will have a field day. We won't even be able to sing delilah.

The four who pleaded guilty got 3 years each and some fines (up to about £500ish each). Think the charge was racist & homophobic chanting. Not sure about which is the racist bit, but the paper reports chanting of "gay boy" (it is pretty clear to me where the HIV line comes from, although some here disagree)
Here's what the judge says: "No doubt you are upright members of society, but in there you acted like animals, like a herd. "This was well-rehearsed – everyone was in sync, everyone knew the words – it was not something that just happened on the day.
"Whether or not Mr Campbell was offended, decent members of the public found this very offensive and so did the bench.
"Anyone who indulges in this disgusting behaviour will be dealt with very severely by the courts."
The really interesting bit will be the court case of the 7 who pleaded not guilty, that's not til mid-may though.

Magistrate Susan Waddle said:
"There were families present, very young children. We also heard from witnesses who found the behaviour disgusting and embarrassing.
Whether or not Mr Campbell was offended, decent members of the public found this very offensive and so did the bench.
Anyone who indulges in this disgusting behaviour will be dealt with very severely by the courts."
Pretty much leaves the door open to prosecute thousands upon thousands of people who chant at football games every week.

If the one's who pleaded not guilty, are convicted, then they could receive significantly higher bans!

Singing about a black man hanging from a tree is not racist now? Nobody knows the "Strange Fruit" song or its origins? No one seen that infamous photo of the lynching in Marion, Indiana? Hmm. The song may be offensive but that is a VERY grey area it is most certainly not racist or homophobic in any way and the fact that some people are trying to misinterpret it to such a degree that they can force it in to a racist box says much of how many people (sadly) think. Judas was Campbells name from the second he left WHL to go to their deadliest enemy and this is quite clearly tied up to that and as for the homophobic bit well yet again nowt there! Offensive chanting could cover just about any and every chant we've ever heard there are people on here that say they're offended by Delilah 'I put my dick in her hand' so once the boundaries are down how long before that gets banned? Sadly this communist oops I mean Labour government want to dictate exactly what people say and what people do and they want the right to film every move we make and they want to charge us for moving in to certain areas. They will certainly push their rules several notches further towards total manipulation of everything if the fans get found guilty. The police misuse section 27s as a matter of course and they'll be licking their lips if they can exploit another grey area.
