Been going home and away since 71 and to be honest it's a pretty tame chant to quite a lot i've heard over the years.

Campbell cold bloodedly shafted Spurs and fled to their deadliest rivals. He should expect all the VERBAL abuse coming his way, he's earned it.

Singing about a black man hanging from a tree is not racist now? Nobody knows the "Strange Fruit" song or its origins? No one seen that infamous photo of the lynching in Marion, Indiana? Hmm. tsm I don't really want to get into an overly intellectual discussion with you here fella, but didn't Judas Escariot, erm ... hang himself? Sod the facts, let us take the politically correct tenuous route. Blackman, tree, hanging=ku klux klan=racism. Slack jawed liberal thinking at it's best

If that is the chant then i am very happy that these twats will be locked up, and off the streets that is totally unacceptable in anything approaching a civilised society why should someone have to be subjected to that while at work. it's unacceptably offensive.

Haha, to be fair, I just read your previous comment and was about to say, ok, I hadn't put it together that it was about being "Judas" - all the random shit about AIDS etc didn't make sense. I guess it's all in the context.

The chant is just taking the piss out of him being gay, and being a judas towards them.
Nothing wrong with that.
The same time, we sing about gingers, fat players, ugly players, people with scars, players with long hair.
Nothing is said, but as soon as someone uses the word "homophobic" and "racism" its a different kettle of fish.
Totally out of order.

"On Sunday, Spurs will oversee the unusual step of having police cameras inside White Hart Lane, in an attempt to identify those they believe are still unaccounted for.
Tottenham will increase the number of stewards on duty on Sunday and some, twice the normal number, will wear head-cams. The footage that they shoot will supplement that from CCTV cameras already inside the ground and the special Metropolitan police cameras." The above is taken from todays Telegraph with regrad to Tottenham's game against Portsmouth on Sunday. Imagine if this was happening to us?

Spot on Skip!
It is undoubtedly HIGHLY offensive.
But it's not racist and not homophobic.
It's certainly offensive to relatives of suicide victims and people with HIV, but where is the line drawn and who draws it?
Think of away supporters at the Brit, lets say, erm ... Chelsea.
They start up a chant of CHEL-SEEEEE, CHEL-SEEEEE, CHEL-SEEEE etc.
Almost instantly hundreds if not thousands of Stokies in the Seddon and Boothen Stands will raise to their feet, put their arms in the air, let their wrists drop limp, and shake their hands from side to side. I don' t need to tell you how the chant goes, because we all know what it sounds like, and we know what it's implication is.
Is this not HUGELY offensive to retarded people and their families?
What if such a family made a complaint and then a witch hunt took place at the Brit?
We now have two 15 years olds and a 13 year old in court being prosecuted for singing a chant at a football game and stewards stalking White Hart Lane with cameras strapped to their heads FFS!

Indeed what is acceptably offensive? sorry i meant it is both unacceptable and offensive. anybody who who is ready to make offensive chants about HIV towards anyone, or even support those who do so, is clearly psychologically disturbed. it is disturbing to me that anyone can think that it is just a bit of banter.

How do Skip, long time no speak matey, we'll have to get together soon for a catch up.
I've always been privately disgusted by the '****' chant to tell you the truth, but I accept it goes with the territory.
The Sol Campbel chant IS highly offensive, although it is almost genius in its succinct composition.
However as you know, you wouldn't ever catch myself or any of my family being involved in either chant, but that's a choice we make individually.
If people though are going to nail their colours to the mast (and I am certainly not) on this chant, then I want them to demonstrate to me SPECIFICALLY where the line is and how that line has been drawn.

Sol Campbell is well documented to be a confused and sensitive individual; traits more commonly associated with the fashion world he flirts with. I think that the issue here is that the chant attacks and reinforces well known character flaws of Sols that he appears to be running away from. If he dealt with these ambiguities, he would not be vulnerable to such attacks. It is silly and wrong to prosecute a random sample of Spurs fans singing a song directed to an ex player - this has always gone on and is part of 'the game'. I believe that the opinion formers in English football , having once lauded Sol as an English Warrior, are now retreating from this position and do not want to be reminded each week that Sol does not conform to their preferred hero profile. I think he is fair game and I would happily chant any of the above in order to undemine the performance of an opposition player.

The FA/Police wont be happy until football crowds behave the same way as a crowd at the Wimbledon All England Tennis Finals.
It wont be long before people are scared to sing at a football game. Its the begining of the end of the working mans game.
Remember the Karen Brady chants when Brum came to town when Fat Barry was manager? Sing that now and you could be looking at a life ban!

I'm no legal eagle but to refer to supposed homosexuality as 'character flaws' wouldn't you do any favours in a court of law trying to argue that it isn't homophobic in its intent.
And secondly, since when did the working man become synonymous with chanting horrible things? All that does is put football square back in the world of Thatcher's '80s where politicians, the police and other authorities think all football fans are thick and/or bigoted bullies. Great.
p.s. yes Paul, to catching up sometime.

Absolute Crap!
Let's all sing and clap politely and sip orange juice while we breathe clean air in our sterile football grounds.
FFS - Football used to be a mans game for men to let loose with pride and passion whilst having a few beers and laughs.
It's a ponces game now and the "authorities" are very happy to "tame it" where and whenever they can to suit the PC'ers who are ruining the country with their minority views and overy hypes criticism.
Look at all this Prince Harry / Phillip garbage that's taking so much of the media's attention. Pathetic.
Over hyped bullshit and any excuse to have a go at people who like to have a laugh and enjoy themselves at a football game.
Do we sing " One greedy bastard" to the likes of Commons and Kavanagh every time they come to the Britannia? Should the people who sing this be punished and banned because it's "offensive"
Let's ban fucking Christmas next year and stop all our kids playing Mary or Joseph in Christmas school plays.
Bing on the Revolution!

Whilst it is an offensive chant, it is clearly not racist/homophobic.
People who claim this are looking into it too much. Actively looking for racist or homophobic connotations with which they can use to build a case.
If people did not suspect Sol Campbell was gay, as rumours have suggested etc.. Then it would not be a matter of homophobia, just a nasty chant directed at a former player.
While I don't think it's a chant I would want to hear our fans sing, and think it is a nasty chant.
The witch-hunt is extreme, and will set a dangerous precedent in football and with the police. Which can only lead to more arrests, based on what? How many people have to deem it offensive? Racist? etc..

There has always been what you term "horrible chanting" at football. The Karen Brady is a slag song is one belted out by the Boothen not that long ago. Football is (used to be) a game of raw and very basic emotion, where fans had no fear of creating an intimidating atmosphere for the oposition that would always involve picking on any weaknesses or percieved flaws of the opposition. Or just plain wind up to get under their skin.
AND it seems to be something that is alive and well and working at the Brit judging by the number of top players who have been off their game and distracted in front of a raucous Britannia Stadium crowd.
The spurs fans got to Campbell in the only way they could for the way he treated their football club showing zero respect for the people who had paid his wages. The same as Commons did to us and if he was on the receiving end of a song that hurt his feelings whilst playing at the Brit I would be delighted as I suspect would be many others.

"People who claim this are looking into it too much. Actively looking for racist or homophobic connotations with which they can use to build a case."Spot On! And the same people who do this don't realise that the Britain we will ALL end up living in with be like an open prison where we have NO rights or ability to say ANYTHING. Free speech is a thing of the past - But I'm not condoning racist abuse because of skin colour because it's just not necessary or wise. Yes, limitations have to be there or things could go the other way and out of hand. I think it's yet another example of why the human race is so pathetic. Question: Walking slowly back to the car park at the Britannia with Old Stokie, chatting away - Do the police have the right to tell me to walk quicker? NO! But they get away with it because of a uniform, an attitude problem and an ego the size of America. I want to come back as a dog

some people might say that everybody should relax a bit more and let the atmosphere ebb and flow naturally. I suppose it is some peoples natural instinct to try and control other peoples actions.
instead of asking where to draw the line of chanting into abuse; why dont we ask where we draw the line when letting people behave like individuals or trying to make them behave in a certain way
its probably not as straightforward as we think.....
