So thats over £3m spent in January and we have 4 new defenders to show for it. Cort(£1.3m), Shawcross(£1m+), Pugh(500k), Griffin(300k). Work from the back I say. DM sorted with Diao so CM next then a left winger to shift Cressie up top and we're sorted Why have we signed Shawcross? SGS

Derby fan here... not here to cause a fuss but i think you should have my/derby fans views on griffin... i know you have a view on him and rate him very highly but my view on him is very poor indeed and i know a lot of other people don't rate him at all.
I heard he did well for you last season and fair play to him for doing that but for me it just proves how far hard work can get you in the championship... in the premiership he looked totally out classed and out played just looked so much out of place it was laughable. 300k is a very good deal for both clubs... us because we got paid for letting one of our worst players go and you because you've got a championship player and normally you would have to pay around 500k for that now days...
doing very well in the season and hope you keep it up...
need more midland teams in the premiership!!

nice to have you home again Griff :-) We'll need all the good players we can get, in the push for promotion. Dickinson and Wilkinson will be in for plenty of matches I'm sure, but the depth in the squad is very very important. Good signing mr. Pulis. Just getting better and better

Good news!!! But wasn't he on a free in the summer so we've just paid 300k for someone that we couldn't agree wages with then or was he still in contract with Portsmouth. ??? theres nothing like competition though it feels quite nice to be a stoke fan at the moment. ;D got me tickets for castle today... Any player wont do well in Derby. No one likes the club. Thats why. Griffins heart is in Stoke. He just could'nt stand Derby, and played bad, so he could come back to Mighty Potters where he belong. Get it.... derbyram !!

To be fair, it must be hard for anyone to look competent when you're in a team that's as far out of its depth as the current Derby squad.
I think it'd be a similar story for us if went up, to be honest.
But he was exceptional for most of last season at our level - and if he can reproduce that, £300,000 is an absolute bargain.
We'll worry about him being exposed in the Prem if we ever get there. I don't think he'd be on his own!

No, it's not really been a move that's worked out too well for either us (Derby) or Griffin to be fair. Griffin's not played particularly well for us, but then, in truth, not many in that keystone cops defence have. Mears is probably the only one. Looking around this board I think most Stoke fans seem to be clued up to the fact that perhaps Griffin isn't up to playing in the Premier League, but is more than capable of doing them a job in helping them get there this season. He was great in the Championship last year, no reason to believe that he won't be again now. If he helps Stoke up, £300k is nothing. As I said, the move's never really worked out, so I'm quite happy to get a fee, get him off of our wagebill, and let the lad move to a team where he's going to be able to make a difference. Good luck Griff, good luck Stoke.

hahaha... if you feel that way about derby players in derby... i think you would be able to get a good deal on Teale - scottish international Moore - big basket at the back Macken - someone payed 5 million for him few years back Lewis - i'd pay you to have him for me... but leeds fans think he was good in the championship. i think you'd be able to get all 4 of them players for a million EASY!! 4 championship class players for a million... got to be worth it

If you take the lot off of our hands, you get a 'buy four - get one free' deal with Bob Malcolm thrown in for good measure.....

Does anyone know the length of the new guys contracts? The sad part about Griffin is that our two youngsters have really been showing good, no sorry, outstanding form,I do hope his coming does not effect them.

Derby have good individuals but a poor squad... the gap between championship and premiership is massive... hard work could get a team promoted and thats what we did... look at the team we played in the play-off final. Look at Earnshaw and David Jones who was 2 of the best players in the championship last season and they can't get into our team. Earnshaw 19 goals in 28 games for norwich last season and would of got loads more if he wasn't injured and Jones was a major part in our campaign and him getting injured is one of the reasons we missed out on automatic promotion. and we needed a big summer to give us any chance to stay up and what did we get Eddie Lewis and Andy Griffin... poor to say the least!! There are not many if any championship teams that could make it in the premiership without looking totally stupid(like we did under davies) Wolves, West Brom and Charlton are probably the only 3 and its because they have decent enough players.

There are not many if any championship teams that could make it in the premiership without looking totally stupid(like we did under davies) Wolves, West Brom and Charlton are probably the only 3 and its because they have decent enough players. Let's qualify that. We have SOME good individuals. We've got plenty of donkeys as well. It's hard to imagine anyone else coming up behaving so poorly in the transfer market as we did prior to the window closing at the end of August. The problem with Davies was that he spent too much time over the summer sorting out his own contract and backroom staff (we averaged two for every player at the club, or so it seemed!), and Davies only liked to sign players that he knew. I believe the only possible exception to that was Feilhaber, who was most likely recommended by Craig Brown. The signings we're making at the moment, are the signings we should have been making during the summer. Far too late for this season now. Next year it's back to square one. Re Earnshaw, he's never been given a chance. Miles better than Howard, yet we persisted with him for far too long and left Earnshaw on the bench, losing both fitness and form in the process. Looking at it objectively, West Brom would have fared better than we have. Watford did last season, Sheff Utd did last season, Charlton and Wolves probably would have as well. To be fair, it's probably easier to identify who would have done as poorly as we have or worse. I'm left with a handful of teams at best.
