Don't think he should be forced to sing it, but it's hypocritical to take the money and represent a country you have no respect for. Which he obviously doesn't Aah the good old fall back argument Took a few pages but we got there in the end

Maybe not, but you have to admit, singing the care for a king or queen, when a good portion of people struggle, and the people you are singing about have no real way of understanding your life, because they don't have any worries, apart from a few family members straying out of line. As long as they keep their keep. I feel very English but the anthem means very little to me. 2 of the Royal family are having treatment for cancer...so I would think they do have worries

I believe he played for the RoI but he's been brought up in England. He didn't sing the RoI anthem and he won't sing the English one. That makes him a wise man in my eyes. Well done to him for explaining his position.

Itβs a horrendous anthem that says nothing of the achievements of ordinary people; instead focusing solely on the monarch, in a country where many people are either indifferent to feudalism or see it as an anachronism. Compare it to land of my fathers, which speaks of the beauty of wales and the culture/heritage; and itβs clear to me why our anthem inspires such controversy compared to theirs. Unfortunately we live in an age where we're not allowed to have any pride in our culture or heritage.. two tier kier would be locking us up for our show of English pride.

I have absolute respect for my country. I have respect for the military, and hurt everytime one of our own is hurt. I have a respect for a great part our hhistory.I have respect for those who fought so that I have the freedom to sing the anthem or not.I have respect for so much But I'm not a sycophant, and I certainly do not have respect for a dysfunctional family. A king that cheated on his wife, was out shagging when he needed to be with his injured son who was in hospital. A person, as we have seen, treats his staff like shit. Change the anthem to 'Land of hope and glory', I will be with you. I have great respect for my country, but I'm not going to sing any tributes to any royal.

You canβt have a thread about the national anthem without Jerusalem coming up so I figured Iβd oblige early π
I like the song, I donβt think it would make a great national anthem necessarily.

I don't think he has no respect Did Rooney have no respect? Probably, he's a Scouser. At the end of the day I don't care, but I wouldn't make excuses for them. They are doing it for the money and that's all. Everyone works for money

So I've heard.. Not a good start for him... His grand mother was Irish apparently.. Hes Irish..... why would an Irish man sing the national anthem of England?.... I dont remember sven or cappello singing it either.... I dont remember the daily mail rounding up a posse to hang either of them......did Jack Charlton sing the Irish anthem when he was the manager?..... or bertie vogts sing flower of Scotland when he was briefly in charge up there?.....he can stand on a chair and sing the back catalogue of fkn ABBA for all I care.... his job is to make the team win.... not sing

Half my family are Irish, and the relationship is a bit complicated, to say the least. There's a lot of mutual affection, but it's a bit thorny Carsley played for them for 10 yrs, and sounds like he had much more of an Irish Catholic upbringing than you'd expect of someone with only one Irish grandparent. You can't really tell someone what nationality they 'feel'. I get the impression Carsley respects both parts of his identity, but certainly doesn't want to damage his 10-yr international career with Ireland by putting some noses out of joint. Harry Kane's dad was born in Galway, but you could tell from his answers in the press conference yesterday, he doesn't feel remotely Irish. It's just such a personal thing. I haven't got a problem with anyone doing what they want in situations like this as long as they're respectful, and Carsley certainly has been. So it's a complete non-story. Actually, Harry Kane declared for Ireland and his family are Irish speakers so not entirely true. He has a strong connection with Galway and a regular visitor. I think he was playing it down a bit as he was close to not being eligible for England and visited Martin O'Neill at the Irish camp with his Dad when on loan at Norwich Bellingham, Grealish, Maddison, Maguire and Rice are all from Irish grandparents or parents. I doubt will count for anything although Bellingham did say he wanted to play for Ireland in his younger days and Jobe still may. You can't blame players for declaring for England in the current state of the Irish team, possibly the lowest ebb I've ever seen although some good youngsters coming along and of course far less chance of a Rice or Bellingham going to a major tournament with Ireland. I get Carsley's choice as an ex Ireland player in Dublin for those who know their history but it's not that important , really shouldn't have said anything if he actually did as will be turned into such a big deal in some quarters. Is there a direct quote from Carsley? How was Kane, born in England, was close to not being eligible for England?

Hus parents He went to see Martin O'Neill with his Dad and declared for Ireland Ireland were playing Bosnia think it was the next month. Had he played he would have been ineligible to play for England as was a competitive game. Due to injury, he played for Spurs that weekend and scored twice and was called up to the England U21 squad and jumped ship.

That makes him no less eligible for England, he's born here If you mean he was close to choosing Ireland as his team that's a valid statement but he was either eligible or he wasn't, you can't be close to being eligible

Strange how things change isn't it ?
My Dad used to tell me me that when he was working in London, outside of Camden and Kilburn, he couldn't get served in a pub .
Now you can't move for British in Dublin tourist taps like Temple Bar and and Irish pubs abroad , chances are is swamped by English and Scots.
A good thing for me
Anyway, you rarely beat us, have never beaten us at a major tournament but can see a rare win on Irish soil tonight. πJust way too good a team at the min.
Ireland have little to offer but should be a good atmosphere
