Fairly quiet this year due to starting a new job and a drop in holiday entitlement. Weeks AI in Kusadasi early last month. 6 nights near Murcia at the end of next month along with my annual(ish) 4 day bender at a Belgian festival in a few weeks. Might look at October half terms if there's any decent last minute deals going and the weather looks OK. What hotel did you stay at in Kusadasi?

Can’t recall seeing one before so here we go. A nice thread for you to tell us all where you off on your holidays and where we can share tips and places to visit while you’re there. I’ll start: Naples in 3 weeks time for a week. Looking to visit Rome, Pompeii and a couple of beaches on the coast. Anyone been before? It’s a special trip for Mrs Orbs and I as we celebrate 25 years of marriage. Used to pop into Naples on ships reasonably often, at odds with seemingly everyone else I quite liked the place. Capri and Ischia just off the coast are nice but they were expensive 40 years ago, shudder to think what they're like now, worth a visit though. Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast are good, if you're feeling adventurous you could rent a motor and do the Amalfi Coast Drive. They've recently uncovered more of Pompeii, saw a TV series about it not long ago, should be good 👍

Set in Naples and will set you right up for your beautiful holiday. 😉😎 Cheers Uncs - I’ll give it a bash (then start episode 1)

Yeh, I'd get there as early as possible, queues for everything are likely at this time of year, fascinating place tho. Trains to Sorrento are pretty regular too. Beware of the 'ladies' down by the castle in Naples if they're still there, apparently their looks are somewhat deceptive 😉

Document your journey on here please. If my drone wasn't broken I'd try to do some videos. Not much of a photographer mind. Maybe I'll see if I can find a repair place on my travels. I'm no Billy the kid though, enjoyed his Poland videos. Loads more to come mate I did order sur glebe early this year but I'm in the middle of a few personal things and my situation is changing massively to fit more travel in 🙂

How easy is that, socially? I know Irish catholics who would be terrified of going to the North. Has the GFA made perceived religious groups less important? I really hope that sectarian bullshit is dying out.

No issue at all for protestants or catholics or British or Irish going either direction providing you're not a prick and are street smart Of course certain areas more so in the North where people from each side should avoid. But yes it's very common for people to cross the border, the Irish historically probably would have been more hesitant due to the troubles and likely still would be more hesitant. Unless you're a staunch loyalist then it's common for northern Irish to cross over. Was in donegal a few weeks back too for a weekend. For the most part and for most people things are calm and most get along. Still a fair share of rockets like but easy enough to avoid trouble for most. You should venture over sometime you'll be well looked after. We're very welcomening for the most part.

I have been on a couple of cycling trips across North and south, and it's been mostly friendly. My main interest was to visit archaeological sites, but got interested in photographing the various plaques marking events during the troubles. As I was the right age and physique and accent to have been a squadie there in the 1980s there was a bit of resentment occasionally. Hope you have a great holiday.

Mate, that's a lot to pack-in in a week.
Personally I'd skip Rome (you can't do it in a day and I reckon you'd end up feeling rushed and ultimately frustrated).
As you're already down there anyway, swap it for a day trip from Sorrento to Ravello, taking in a decent chunk of the Amalfi Coast (it will blow your mind) and save Rome for another time, when you can do it justice.

Nice one Ely - I think Rome is just over an hour away on the train too. Have a fantastic time! Heard mixed reviews of Naples but I loved it even though I was on my bill, just visiting before a work trip. Paul's comment was good though. There's just so much to see and do in Italy that I think most people pack too much in. We learned to do fewer places per trip now. Italian cities often have cultural associations that do free walking tours from locals. Did one in Naples and another in Turin and they were both great. The guides had top info on local rock shows, beat party piazza etc.

In June we stopped in Orleans for 3 days and I loved it.
A bit like York in that it's historic and walkable. Was buzzing at night with street bars even though it's not a big city.
Tons of options down the Loire valley too, we got a big bike ride in but ran out of time for canoeing or visiting many places.
About an hour from Paris by train and the whole Loire was nice. Noticed that people seems to speak less English than Paris or even Avignon area.

In Paphos at Kefalos Beach Village, 45’c heat today no breeze, very hot and sunburn from yesterday.
Hotel is nice the food (breakfast) not great but all inclusive and helps in this hot climate.
Not ventured to the harbour yet but will do and doing the water park on weds. Tomorrow I’m keeping my back cover to help the sunburn cool down.

Currently in Saint Palais Sur Mer for 2 weeks , been before and love this area of west coast, market towns, beaches and some lovely coast roads to explore . 37 yesterday but settling to high 20s as week goes on so going to Bordeaux with the mrs for a day .Done La Rochelle before which is an hour north . We usually add a few days in Paris on at end but sod that this year with the Olympics on. Kids getting bit big for driving holidays so debating doing the all inclusive malarkey somewhere next year but France has served us well over years, done Loire Valley and chunks of Brittany too. Always stop off for night in Abbeville ( 90 mins from Calais ish) on last night and go same fish restaurant, closest thing to a family tradition we have lol but know the hotel people and the couple that run restaurant and makes for a special last day
