It is moving the goal posts mate yes. He can't win can he at all? People moan he doesn't play the kids and develop them. He plays a sixteen year old and then it's 'hes not paying all the kids' so he doesn't develop them. Nice references to my posts above saying I don’t have the brains to acknowledge that 1 start of a 16 year old proves he’s a manager that will develop kids and make the most of the work done in the academy. This irrefutable ‘evidence’ basically underpins the case that you make despite that fact that AN has not developed younger talent at any of the other clubs he’s been at (go and look up the stats if you want to know, but you are more likely to ignore them as they don’t suit your agenda). It remains to be seen if AN will change his approach, maybe he will, maybe he won’t, we don’t know. But if you are able to engage your brain for a millisecond (think you find that hard based not only on your tenuous argument but also your inability to master basic spelling and grammar), you might be able to see that it’s a perfectly valid point of view to hold based on years of evidence not a meaningless cup game. So when he plays youth that doesn't count because it's a cup game then? I don't care about what he's done at other clubs, I care about what he does at Stoke. We've got a good youngster and he is playing him. Also just to mention I'm on my phone so it does predictive spelling so mistakes are made yes. Once again you take it into personal put downs because you can't have a debate about football without doing that can you? I was talking with someone who talks back normally and doesn't cry because I don't agree with them.

I'm not knocking Neil for blooding Sidibe or for not blooding enough kids, I'm just not having posters rubbing people's noses in it based off one example when the history of the manager is one of being a 'front of house' manager, and turning to more experienced players before in house youngsters. If he goes on and bloods a number of kids here then fair enough and the argument stacks up. Until then it simply doesn't. In his time at Stoke and that is all I care about there is absolutely nothing to suggest that he won't give youngsters a chance, absolutely nothing. Since he has been here Tezgel, Lowe, Macari and now Sidibe have all had minutes. Ok not a great amount but he has used them. We do not see what goes on behind the scenes but the fact that he is playing Sol and I think Tezgel will feature this season aswell for what it's worth suggests to me that he is more than willing to give youngsters a chance and is keen to develop them. There is no evidence whatsoever mate that he won't use youngsters if they are good enough. There is evidence that he will and that was the point I made to the bloke on here on Saturday mate. Good debate mate, I've enjoyed it. 👍

I think alot of it and I'm not talking about the onlooker who talks sensibly and without name calling and abuse by the way, is that it's nothing to do with the fact that Alex Neil doesn't develop kids or that Alex Neil hadn't made enough signings, it is that they don't like Alex Neil. Because of this they will use any stick to beat him with. From what I can see the bloke is turning the club I love around from some of the worst times we've had in recent memory into more positive times so let's get behind him for crying out loud. That's not to say he's immune to criticism but when he's done absolutely nothing wrong so far this season it's hard to see people knocking what he's doing. He's played a sixteen year old who looks quality, let's give him credit. I think you are right in that Neil isn't the sort of manager that uses the first team to develop youngsters and that he will only play youngsters when they can justify their place in the team. All that playing Sidibe proves is that Neil doesn't have anything against young players per se and if they are good enough he will play them. Personally I think Neil is right - you don't use your first team for development, you use the loan system and have young players cut their teeth at the level they are at. The only reason Sidibe is getting game time is because Neil thinks he's good enough at this level and if his form dips or his inexperience starts to show he won't pick him which for me is how it should be. The fact he played nearly 90 minutes is incredible for a kid of his age and if he continues to justify his place we have one of the hottest properties in this league on our books and shows the Academy is heading in the right direction and really starting to deliver. And credit to Neil for keeping an open mind on how best to build the best squad he can with the resources available to him.

He's stuck between a rock and a hard place though isn't he. If he went full on and played all the kids to please the people who moan that he doesn't develop kids then we'd be facing relegation wouldn't we quite honestly? Those exact people would then be calling for his head. I think playing kids for the sake of playing them can do more harm than good. I think he's doing it the right way by giving the ones who are clearly good enough for this level a chance which is more than we have seen for a good while isn't it mate. In an ideal world we would be able to give them all a run out but it's a results driven business isn't it and it just wouldn't bring the results. I don't disagree but it doesn't prove people wrong that say he isn't a manager that develops kids, because he just isn't for the reasons you've said. He's never been that type of manager in his career and there is nothing wrong with that to a point. Pulis was the same and he'd only play kids when he either had to or they had the physical attributes that he craved. When he starts blooding Lowe, Sparrow and whoever else and turns them into first team players then I'll concede that he's good with kids, until then I'll take the post above that 'this post aged well' and treat it with the contempt it deserves. We've started the season very well, let's just leave it at that. Interested to know which manager has ever introduced five players from one youth team? It's more often one player making it every one or two seasons at our level.

This irrefutable ‘evidence’ basically underpins the case that you make despite that fact that AN has not developed younger talent at any of the other clubs he’s been at. Worth noting that Preston only have a Category 3 academy so he was unlikely to have a great crop of youngsters to work with there. This is bang on for me. No manager in the world is going to play a player regardless of age if they don't rate them and why would they? It is their job on the line at the end of the day if results don't go right and they are the ones who are scrutinised on every decision they make. One thing is for sure though, there will not be many managers if any in the championship this season giving a sixteen year old time on the pitch. I think that says all we need about Alex Neil's stance on developing youth at our club.

Totally agree that they must be ready, you don't develop them in the first team until they are ready. However their development doesn't stop once they make their debut. I'm pretty sure that in Spain Sidibe was one included to make up the numbers, and what an achievement that was at 16. Neil then saw something in him and over the past eight weeks has developed him to be ready to make his full debut last night. Unlike others I can think of (Verlinden, N'goy, Shenton), knew exactly what he had to do. How is that not developing him. I also think it was mentioned that Shawcross's job would include helping the transition from academy to first team and also that Morris sits on the bench at first team matches. Alongside having players training with the first team regularly what else is Neil expected to do to develop youth? He has enough to do developing the first team for two matches a week without getting involved in the youth set up any more than he currently is.

Yes he gave the players the chance in the first team and would have been a huge influence on them but there are so many things that factor into a players development. It is also worth noting that the players that came through at that time at Man United was an absolute freak of a crop of youngsters that probably won't be repeated again. As you say it is normally one to two players every couple of seasons at our level and not many more higher up to be fair. All the money that Man city pump into their academy and the only one in their first team is Foden isn't it? That says it all really on how often a youngster who is actually good enough to make a difference to the first team comes through.

Apparently went mental at the team when they were celebrating a draw against them. From memory he brought through McLeish, Simpson, Black, Cooper , Hewitt, Leighton, Strachan (bought before he arrived) at the same time. Willie Miller was already there and bought Peter Weir, Dougie Bell and Mark McGhee. Five years later and he's managed to bring through the best team in Europe from a provincial club with an attendance of 20k. Defo no fluke - the bloke was a genius.

To add balance to that argument, he had the COVID season which helped him to do it.

That isn't what Neil is doing - he is only giving game time to players who can already justify their place in the team. If we have young players with potential but not yet good enough to play at Championship level he won't pick them to help them develop in the first team, he'll get them to develop out on loan at a level they are currently fit for.

By all accounts both Sol and Nathan Lowe have been absolutely outstanding in training with the first team, and quite rightly have been called up. There's blooding kids into first team football, but to do so with a centre mid takes some bottle and faith by the manager. It's the most congested and keenly contested area of the pitch, so physicality is needed - but what I love about this is that Sol plays with his brain and is a proper footballer. Looking at current recruitment, we are going towards talent and ability and technique. As a dad of a smallish central midfielder, it's great to see, and my lad now wants to be Sol Sidibe.

Interested to know which manager has ever introduced five players from one youth team? It's more often one player making it every one or two seasons at our level. I would probably say Fergie at the shit off the top of my head but then he wasn't solely down to their development and no manager is mate. Cole Palmer is breaking through to the first team squad at Man City regularly now

From what I saw yesterday, Sol had a solid game, unlucky to get his booking, but the WBA player saw a cheap yellow. Sol passed well and generally covered his space well, he stood out with his play in the final third, showing a decent repertoire of passing range. He match seasoned pros. He was just a little better than all other midfielders - if he was 24 we’d be saying he had a good game, he did amazing for a 16 year old, if he develops his play in the final third, as well as develops physically and mentally, this is the Bellingham factor that excites me: we will have a brilliant player on our hands!

Still think it's only the odd one that actually makes it into the first team from the academies though bud.

I didn't make it personal at all, I asked where you got that shit from. Ok I definitely could have worded it better but I wasn't abusing you or calling you names, it was a genuine question about football and I thought you would have took it for what it was and answered me back. However you went way over the top with your reaction. I have never bullied anyone in my life and people on this board and in real life know that I don't ever speak to people in that manner. The only one who got into personal abuse was you. If you can't handle your opinion being questioned without flying off and calling people fuckheads or whatever you called me then a football message board probably isn't the place for you. Enjoy your day as that's all you're getting from me. You clearly can’t accept that you were personally abusive. Saying ‘where have you actually got this shit from’ and then a few days later writing ‘if he has the brains to acknowledge blah blah’ sorry but that is not an attempt to have a debate. All you’re doing is trying to pour shit on my view because it doesn’t align with yours. You are right I did fly off the handle, fair enough. Happy not to continue discussing anything with you, so we can leave it there. There's nothing abusive about asking you where you got an opinion from at all. I probably should have worded it better yes but there was no need at all for all the names as you already know. Happy to leave it there and I do apologise for not wording my original question in a better way.

So often when youngsters are given a chance in the first team they play it really safe and look for backwards and sideways passes because they’re scared of making a mistake. I was really struck and impressed by how he didn’t do that. He always looked to carry the ball forward or make a progressive pass. It didn’t always come off, but it often did. Great to see from such a young player.
