They have decided what words are offensive, and not only that, they have decided the value of persons based on those descriptions which is a completely different matter!
I had a communist teacher at school (well most of them were, some even ultra left), who didn't like the idea people were getting higher exams or higher wages if they achieved more, since according to her the people with lower education or lower wages were considered to be worth less as persons. She couldn't separate an efficiency level or production rate from the person itself.
Another problem is when everyone has to be included in books nowadays (at least where I live).
In the future you can't write a book about Stoke, since it's not also about Hull, Reading, Leeds, Luton ... And it will be troublesome to write a crime story with a middle aged white Mr Autumn, since you have to include all the other aspects as well, different skin colours, younger AND older than him, different sex AND different gender, other body shapes etc. So it has to be 40 detectives entering the room at each time. And you can't let the door knob be to the left of the door, since you would have to explain why it wasn't to the right to the editor, publishing company and readers here, so you would have to install two doors in each room or a saloon door rather, but then you will be asked why they can't come in from the roof instead ...

the far right is banning books, the far left is "censoring" them. how can they not see this is the same thing?
they don't gotta burn the books, they just remove 'em

“Puffin has hired sensitivity readers to rewrite chunks of the author’s text to make sure the books “can continue to be enjoyed by all today””
I’m surprised Puffin still allows itself to be know as that. Surely Gayfin, or even Allfin would be much more inclusive for them?

It’s a very sad state of affairs. Life will soon be a very different one to the one I grew up with and in most (not all) cases not for the better.

Gender-neutral terms have been added in places – where Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s Oompa Loompas were “small men”, they are now “small people”. The Cloud-Men in James and the Giant Peach have become Cloud-People.How is small men offensive to anyone exactly? In The Witches, a paragraph explaining that witches are bald beneath their wigs ends with the new line: “There are plenty of other reasons why women might wear wigs and there is certainly nothing wrong with that.”Is just insanity? - Looks like they've lost their marbles at the publisher.

Most problematic is the last seven words: "there is certainly nothing wrong with that". Eehh, who said it was?

How is small men offensive to anyone exactly? Let me explain how it works within the book industry atm. I'm well aware of how they "think'. Everything written down here is according to them, the publishers et cetera. "Small men" is extremely offensive for a number of reasons. They would say this if you sent a manuscript to one of them, any of them: First of all, why are they men? Couldn't you have included women? Any what about everyone in between, why aren't they included? And the ones who see themselves as animals or bookshelves or not even born yet, what can I say to all of them when the mail inbox is filled with hate? And what's wrong with tall people? Many people in the world are tall. Didn't you know that? We don't want any texts based on judgement and prejudices. We can't publish this. You must understand that! Addition: I now see "small people" was accepted obviously in the example w R Dahl. That's generous. I'm not sure it would have been where I live.

Hats off to the person of non-specific gender who thought this one up : cheapest mass publicity possible.
No doubt they will "back down" due to "public pressure to "respect" the original author.
Seen it all before.

Seen it all before. Last night, upon hearing the new edition of the books would have the ridiculous new wording, I bought a set of Roald Dahl books for my infant daughter to read in ~8 years, as I want to make sure she reads the old wording. So it certainly might create a short term spike in sales.

Reminds me of a course my colleagues and I were on once where we were told not to use phrases like “no problem” because it could suggest that there actually is a problem.

Queue the inevitable argument-
"It's just a story, does it matter, more important stuff going on..."
Well if it doesn't matter then just leave the stories as the author wrote them as there are indeed much more important things going on in the world!

So it's about sex/gender first of all here.

It feels like the silent majority and what they believe is less important than the very vocal minority who seem to be able to do and say what they want as basically anyone that questions their beliefs is “shamed.” or accused of being an “ist.” Sooner or later the majority will have had enough of reading this blurb and start getting vocal themselves.
Saw this over the weekend
I think it sums things up perfectly in relation to the weirdness of it all.

The problem is that they attribute a value to personal physical characteristics.
That's why you "must" not use words as disabled, black or man.
They should ask themselves, who has the prejudices?

I guess it’s generally from talking to either people I work with, friends or family. None of whom are particularly political but are sick to the back teeth of Sam Smith or the other divisive, attention seeking types telling people what they should think or be and wanting to change Roald Dahl or anything else they don’t agree with. What’s your thoughts on the video?
