I think you enjoy a bit of badger baiting yourself. That's animal cruelty. It's the more acceptable face of discrimination. Speciesist

Not at all. You will always be asked to defend your choices in detail at the publishing company. And asked to include everyone. And if you're not, then required to change the persons at least so they belong to minority groups. If you persist, then they won't bother ... Thank God for self publishing, until they've invented a new authority censoring everything published on the market. I’m pretty sure that there are plenty (PLENTY) of books that have a straight, white couple as a lead. There are plenty (PLENTY) more that have a straight, white male as a solo lead that then shags about (most detective novels). I don’t agree with rewriting novels. I think it’s unfair to the reader to deny of them of an opportunity to understand literature of that era and how it differs to now. I don’t agree that all novels now “include everyone” just because there is a little more diversity than there used to be. I can primarily speak about our book market here of course, I've followed and worked within it for a couple of decades. And I can assure you it's a definite priority if your manuscript includes minority groups. It's difficult for everyone to get published, but if you've concentrated on a white hetero couple it's very tough. You're right, all novels now don't include everyone. I'm talking about what happens here at meetings before books are published in the future. At the eventual first contact and at the meetings you must be prepared to answer a lot of questions about the choices you've made first of all, especially if it's pure fiction. Why does the story takes place there? Why did they have those occupations? Why did they have these skin colours? Why did you pick this sexual preference? Why did you narrow it and exclude this, this and that group? So be prepared! I think it's a problem, since excluding a certain group doesn't mean you hate them. In the future - thanks to AI - I think this invented "problem" will be solved. The readers will be able to pick the right choices (characteristics) for them in advance, and read about whoever they want.

I’m famous at work and home for “showing my arse” in arguments, but if I was the family I would say “you know what we’ll just pull all the books from future publishing”

They deserve to be thrown into Trunchbull's iron maiden.

I'm fairly certain Dahl's family, or at least their representative, had to agree to the rewrites. They deserve to be thrown into Trunchbull's iron maiden. I suppose they would agree to almost anything, as long as the money keeps rolling in. Or the opposite, as in the case with Stieg Larsson and Millenium. The female he lived with didn't want them to finish the writings and publish more stories. They didn't care and hired a guy. He didn't care either. Scandal if you ask me!
