Sounds wishy washy? Everyone talks about "improving efficiency" but wtf does that really mean? Fewer care workers per care home resident? Maybe AI will help the NHS with things like paperwork and notes so doctors can spend more time seeing people? I think they know that it's going to come down. Some expert was saying on the radio that the main reason for the increases is the student plus dependant numbers which are artificially high due to the post Covid release on restrictions around the world. He also said the government was taking steps to restrict dependants . Hong Kong and Ukraine numbers are stabilising and who knows when Ukranians will start to leave. And yet more than 80% of the 672,000 were Visas for workers with Skill shortages in UK and their dependents Did the "expert" explain this? |

Actually that makes a load of sense. I saw 150k dependents & family coming with students? I imagine you could cut those down a lot and still have plenty of people wanting to come and study. Looks like there are easy and fair ways to cut the numbers by a lot and whichever party is in power will take the credit. Not if you want to sign a Trade Deal with India there isn't |

Does anyone have a clear and simple explanation of how the student / dependant thing works? It seems like if you are one of the half a million people to whom we give a student visa to each year then if you like you can bring the following along with you in your suit case... >>> Who can be a student dependent? I am not sure how restricting the number of dependants a student can bring would help that much to keep numbers down? I mean I presume the majority would be too young to have an existing family? And not too many would have multiple husbands, wives and civil partners. The whole thing just seems very odd. And finally here is a graph of net immigration for your delectation. Sorry G, I don't have an answer to the first half of your post but yes, it does make you wonder if the Brexit campaign had been truthful and told voters that, not only would immigration not come down but that it would actually significantly go up, whilst that the European immigrants that we were housing would be replaced by ones from Africa and Asia, I wonder just what the actual outcome of the referendum would have been?
