The future of the planet is far more important than getting to that vital hospital appointment, perhaps travelling to see a loved one for the very last time, driving your pregnant wife to the maternity hospital, or attending an important job interview or meeting.
It's far more important than four or five years in the slammer as well, so eat what you ordered.

They are thinking about your grand kids and great grandkids for you while you continue milking the planet for your own ends The same grand kids that'll be asking why the worlds economies collapsed and why there are marauding gangs traversing the land taking whatever anyone has left? If that's a bit dystopian for you I give you these clowns who keep telling the current kids we're going to boil to death in 10 years. And have been saying that or indeed freezing to death since 1960...

We should all be concerned by The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022, irrespective of our opinions on Just Stop Oil. It is a draconian piece of legislation and a slippery slope for citizens of this country. And the judge should reflect on why he feels the length of sentence was justified when he deemed 3 teenagers robbing a disabled man at knifepoint in the middle of the night worthy of only 3 years for each perpetrator. Or a 12 months suspended sentence for a nonce maybe?

I am grateful to all the climate emergency protesters for actually trying to do something rather than just being concerned observers. I can't really find the words to say how inappropriate/ stupid/ out of touch are the sentences. .....Particularly in light of the "sudden" awareness of the pressure on prisons . The Act ONLY allows a custodial sentence or fine on guilt If the offenders are guilty of something ( which they had to be.....lesser offences such as breach if the peace , criminal damage ( for other protests) have clearly been committed)... then a more appropriate sentence would be community service.....two years every Saturday cleaning up the streets if you like. The five defendants are not a direct danger to society. The use of the word " conspiracy " in the Act raises it to a whole new level. I can't believe the defendants will actually spend up to two years in prison ( of the 4/5 year sentences. The system is out of touch with reality in more ways than one. Having said that: I had to drive my wife to hospital before the birth of my son , in an emergency situation. I can't go into all the detail, but we'd already had 4 miscarriages, still birth twins at 8 months, 3 periods of hospitalised bed rest, pre eclampsia. She ended up having an emergency caesarian, son born 8 weeks premature... other issues. When I had a heart attack in 2017 I drove myself to hospital having had chest pains for an hour and on arrival it became an emergency . Both scenarios could have ended in deaths. I've also driven blue lighted Police cars in emergencies....would they have been stopped. Effective protest has to disrupt something, but it is difficult to get it right SO it is clear to me that just to stop all traffic isn't very kind, considerate, caring and empathetic. Also I don't particularly like to see buildings sprayed with paint. An old chestnut.....part of the answer is electoral reform......Green issues and other issues that are actually important to the " people " would be better represented in Parliament rather than those decided by the self interested political elite. ..................... 14,000 people have already signed Just Stop Oil’s petition calling for an end to the imprisonment of truth tellers. Who knows how many personal tragedies they have caused? Obviously I totally get that Dave.( There are more details in the caesarian one that add to the situation....but in short an hours delay WOULD probably have led to the death ( or severe cerebal damage)of my son and my wife was touch and go. Pre eclampsia is dangerous). I also get the Climate Emergency. I also get the nature of effective protest. More representation ..... less need for protest ( hopefully) In these particular cases " guilt " is one issue......I'd imagine the protesters would clearly admit ( perhaps even welcome ) their guilt. The issue is the totally inappropriate sentences. Which puts the Law into question. Plus..... how do people protest effectively AND keep ( make) the public on their side?

Why oh why were they not given at least 4 years?

What a ridiculous sentence. I can't see it sticking, to be honest. Whilst I agree that they should be prosecuted and sentenced for breaking the law, those sentences are akin to what you'd get for killing someone in a hit and run. The levels of pain and damage are just not comparable. Tickled me to see the Daily Hate suddenly finding that some judges aren't actually the enemy of the people

We're not legal experts nor did we have full access to all the court documents but I do completely agree with you that the sentences in the JSO case are clearly influenced by external agents wanting to make an example of people.
There'll be rapists and kiddie fiddlers doing less time.
