I just hope we get somebody that has the courage to open up and play. An interesting time and I'm excited to see who they go for but I have a sinking feeling it'll be same old...

Sounds like Borthwick could be confirmed by the end of the week. RFU are apparently just sorting things with Leicester who are reluctant to lose him.

I'm not as informed as some on here but Steve Borthwick as a player was old school "up the jumper" so I'm not sure if he'll be that much more expansive as a coach.

Another 'League legend being brought in to shake up/stimulate Union at international level?

Australia have appointed Eddie Jones as their new coach. They obviously haven't watched England play recently!

Hopefully it'll be the "most recent" Eddie in charge and not the "early" Eddie when he first took over as England coach.

Yeah, it's a strange one with EJ, for me it was definitely the right thing to do though.

No Billy Vunipola, Jonny May or Jack Nowell in the 6 nations squad (Tom Curry is injured)

So the Six Nations gets underway today and France and Ireland seem clear favourites, however I think Wales will be stronger under Gatland and I expect them to give Ireland a tough game today. It will be interesting to see how England perform under Borthwick. I think anything below finishing 3rd will be a disappointment. One gripe I have is that I don't like Farrell playing at No.12. I can see the advantages in having an extra kicker but I think he stifles the creativity of our backline. For me, he either plays at Fly Half or not at all.

I think finishing 3rd is probably about as good as we can hope for this year. France and Ireland look very good and Wales played a blinder appointing Gatland whilst we dithered over sacking Jones. I remain to be convinced by Steve Borthwick even though he did well at Leicester.
I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised by this "new" England, especially in a World Cup year, but I think it's too soon to expect big improvements.
Just touching on the World Cup, the opening game of France v NZ should be a cracker.

I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised by this "new" England, especially in a World Cup year, but I think it's too soon to expect big improvements. Just touching on the World Cup, the opening game of France v NZ should be a cracker. My thoughts exactly. I kind of feel the same way as I did when Southgate led us into the 2018 football WC: not really expecting much and then being pleasantly surprised by the outcome. So I hope this will be the same. The depressing thing about English rugby, apart from the massive resources we have at our disposal which should result in better results, is that our style of play is so relentlessly turgid and boring. When was the last time we had a set of backs that regularly gave you confidence that when they got the ball something exciting and, more importantly, productive was likely to happen? The very start of the Jones era maybe? I'm not overly critical of Jones' time at England, I think he was good for us after the Lancaster disaster, but much like Pulis at Stoke, his time had come and gone. Perhaps Borthwick's England will be a breath of fresh air. The fact that he was one of Jones's coaches is a bit of a worry. Looking forward to seeing if Marcus Smith can carry his good Harlequins form into the Test matches. I think the fixtures favour Ireland slightly, they have both France and England at home so I'll go for them to win the title this year.

At least it's stopped being a kicking fest and we look more willing to run the ball. Two well worked tries as well.
