I'm not sure its even instant success, some decent signs of progress and some sign that the manager knows what he's doing would go a long way. The tall striker thing came from a MON interview. Fair enough re the tall striker, I missed that one. I agree that MON has to get it together this season though. We’ve looked so promising in the early stages to then completely fall off a cliff. The hope I’m hanging onto is that we’re not getting turned over and with a few adjustments and a bit of luck we’ll make something happen this season. I understand why people have had enough but I’m optimistic that we’re on the cusp of getting it right. That said, if we’re not top 6 this season he needs to move on or upstairs. Moving him up stairs should never happen, having someone that's already failed holding the reins re signings etc seems very odd to me.

If we need to go long, Powell can play target man pretty much as well as anyone in this division. Instead, we should probably look to play the ball down the channels more and if the opposition are compact to keep playing the ball wide getting crosses in. In Brown and Campbell we have two players that are strong, direct, fast and skillful enough (enough being the keyword) to attempt that instead of long balls down the middle; which most centre backs in this division will see as their bread and butter, even against some of the best target men. Maja for the right price would be a reasonable option as the main man with his link up play if we play Brown, Campbell and others higher up the pitch than they were this season just gone. I think that ignores the nature of this manager which is more to have his wide forwards working back to protect the WB's than have the WB's get up the pitch early to allow the wide forwards to get closer to the central striker. Historically yes, but he needs to change it. If we go the target man way, we will still need players higher up the pitch, it would need to come from centre mid more which is riskier. Also, the biggest problem we have this season is the unreasonable disconnect between what the manager can afford to do, versus the insistency of a top 6 finish; which to be fair we are probably closer to it than we have been for years.

Don’t get the negativity for him, he didn’t hit the ground running per say, but definitely showed enough for me, especially for a nominal fee and wages which I imagine he’ll be on.
If we bring in Maja, based off MON comments we must be in for another striker too, which I think is about right.
With Laurent, nyambe and Maja we could actually be there or there about

Going for younger players with re-sale value or frees. I think people are getting a bit too hung up on Surridge and Doughty. They came, didn’t pan out, were moved on with no real consequences. I’d say he’s got more right in terms of permanent deals than he’s got wrong. The loans have been more miss than hit admittedly. He might not be the man but we do need someone who lays out strategy, understands the finances and sets the footballing philosophy moving forward. He ticks a lot of boxes and I would imagine he has a decent enough relationship with “the family”.

It's really not a great look for players he's spent what meagre fees are available to us on to not work out. He seems not to rate Wilmot either.

Powell can win headers, but combatting like that probably isn’t good for someone with a history of injuries. It also completely negates his main strength: getting into space. Do we really have to just “make do”. Powell can do a lot of things, he’s a good player. It doesn’t mean he should be doing things other than what he is best at on a regular basis. Maja received the ball well into feet. He didn’t do much above ground control. He also didn’t have a great work rate, which a solo forward needs. Kicking into space only works if there is space to kick it into. If the goal is to just boot it towards the corner flag, that’s not going to work.

That’s the point of buying younger talent though, you increase the likelihood of someone else wanting to take them. So from a risk perspective, it’s relatively minimal. We spent money on Brown and he’s been far more than anyone expected based on his early showings. I’m not convinced he doesn’t rate Wilmot, he’s juggled him from positions to help the team out. Think he’ll be a big player for us this season.

I don't think we can hang our hat on people still wanting to near enough give us our money back on failed younger signings, that doesn't seem sustainable to me.

I don’t want him involved in the finances either that’s a separate roll CEO, COO who gives the financial parameters to the football people. The way you’re suggesting the DoF type involves themself in the financial side and indeed what we have with MON being heavily involved on the financial side is just cobbling incompatible rolls together, there is just no need just get the best people you can afford for each role. These relationships should be professional but not too cosy.

MON’s unforced changes to the defence were bizarre last season, starting with Chester for Ostigaard. He struggled to replace Souttar and eventually settled on Jagielka but the rest of his changes were voluntary and resulted in a poorer defence than we started the season with. People use the Souttar injury to defend him but he started fixing something that wasn’t broke well before it.

He's given to panicking I think, the same thing happened after the Luton home defeat. Binned off something that was showing promise in favour of manic chopping and changing.

It’s not ideal but it’s far more sustainable than the the old policy of spunking millions on players then letting them run down their contracts or go for pennies on the pound.

The latter was something I advocated in the prem when we had plenty of financial room for manoeuvre. On top of our regular transfer business I wanted us to take a punt on 5/6 promising young players on lowish wages and 2/3 year contracts on the basis of them being relatively easy to move on if they don’t progress how you thought they might. It’s sustainable at that level as it mimic’s the big clubs. Certainly now every fee we pay is critical and the volume of deals and wages we can take on strictly limited you’d hope we’d be a little more sure what we are buying is something that we have a plan how to use. In our position buying a player for £600,000 then never giving him a start in the league ought to concern people.

He’d already started fucking about with the best defence we fielded all season well before Souttar’s injury. Can only put that down to some sort of personality clash with Ostigaard as there was nothing on the pitch to merit it.

He’s done nothing whatsoever to give me any confidence both on and off the pitch, he’s had numerous chances and failed miserably. The bloke justly should have been booted out, in simple terms I don’t trust him whatsoever.

One of the other posters above made a good point earlier that the set up should be different which was a fair enough point. I’ve not got blind loyalty to MON, he needs to really get his act together this season on the pitch but the external factors that go beyond the pitch and are all the points I mentioned above are the types of thing a DoF should be doing. Laurent is the latest in a long string of players to specifically mention him as the reason they joined. It’s a theoretical and will probably never happen but it definitely doesn’t hurt to have someone on your side who has that kind of pull with players.

I go to more away games than home so to be fair, I definitely get the better end of the deal (both performances and atmosphere) and spend a lot of time on Twitter, where the players seems genuinely happy to be here and engage with the fans regularly. Anyway, I’ve become what I typically despise on here and have completely derailed a thread about a player by going off on a tangent. So anyway, Maja is class and he’s going to score 16 goals this season. 13 league, 3 in the cup.

I would like to see him sign personally and can see him as a double figure striker possibly if now fully fit. He certainly wasn't when he first came but is a player in there. Liking our deals so far, on paper anyway.

Not sure about Maja, dint think he was given a rair chance too bitty. Rather like the okey cokey, in out and shaken all about some players need to settle so will reserve judgement when he has done a full pre season and starting.
