Funny or not?
Can’t say any joke he tells offends me, but guess it’s easy not to be offended when you’re not the subject of it. However, I can’t say I find him that funny either. Just seems to be the same, tired gags he’s been telling over the last 10-15 years. I’d expect him to have much more to bring to the table in 2022 than the lazy “I’m an atheist”, “humans are stupid” and repeating the word cunt for an hour.
Seems far more concerned with trying to offend people and defending it by saying it’s comedy, than actually saying anything particularly funny.

His old stand ups I used to really like, but he just seems a bit stuck on this being controversial thing. He’s funny as proved in the past and with any sitcom he’s written, so he can surely do better than “women with a penis” jokes? His last few stand ups just seem to have dipped massively.

Don't like what I've seen. Never seen the Office.
A strange thing, and it may be a psychological denial or rejection, but there are three so called comedians, whose names, if I'm shown an image, I can't place or remember, as they are somehow interchangeable. Ricky Gervais. Phil Jupitas and Johnny Vegas!

I'm a fan, but I've seen a couple of clips from has new stand up and it lacked the insight that usually gives him the cutting edge that keeps him on the clever side of shock comedy.

I’m a big fan but thought it was his poorest special. That’s not a political comment obviously, I’m a free speech absolutist and think the people driving cancel culture and looking to censor comedy are mentally ill. It just wasn’t close to the level of his best standup. I did still enjoy it but I doubt I would’ve if I wasn’t already a huge fan.

Didn't think Derek was that great but the rest are all excellent, especially After Life, which had that classic mix of poignancy, laugh out loud hilarity (the woman who made food from her own secretions!) and some great characters. He's definitely one of our best comedians/writers and a massive campaigner for animal welfare too which is a good sign. |

Absolutely superb and needed more than ever right now. Always had a lot of time for Ricky. Brilliant writer who gets the excruciatingly funny with a blend of pathos spot on. |

I like his comedy writing, although Stephen Merchant needs to take an equal share of the credit for The Office and Extras.
I think his stand up is bang average to be honest, it may be seen as edgy but it's not particularly funny.

The Office is still a work of art. His stand up is utter wank, route one, punching down rather than the subtle edginess he'd have you believe.

Because of what he'll view as transphobic jokes when actually the jokes were not really about trans people but people like him who are more worried about the correct pronouns than responding to genuine worries from women without beards. |
