We need a Glenn Whelan type midfielder and forwards with agility and speed and who can score. “Glen Whelan type of midfielder”……using GW as an “example” you do realise he was shit according to the Oatcakes footballing experts. The same will be said about a player who defends, attacks and links play as JA does in five years time Whelan was very underappreciated at Stoke. Not only by certain sections of supporters but I get the feeling a certain Mark Hughes didn't see the full value of him until he left and he struggled to replace him.

Jordan Thompson does what Allen does. We can do better easily. Of course we can 👍

FML! Joe Allen couldn't defend OJ Simpson, hasn't scored in 2½ years and would struggle to assist your granny across the road!

Whelan was woeful in his last season with us and like Walters played many a part in 3/4 nil drubbings. Indeed the worst late Hughes performance I watched was 4-0 away at Spurs at WHL when we went 4-0 down before half time that had the following good old boys playing Grant Bardsley Shawcross Adam Whelan Allen Crouch.

(Preferably clingfilm) Bit pathetic really whatever his faults he’s given fantastic commitment , and so many come on and say we are great fans as long as players give their all , and your on here calling him that . if he scores the winner in the first game it would be easy to understand a little cupped ear gesture and then al, the whiners will be on again .

Allen is one of the worst signings this club has ever made. At least Wimmer barely played.
Allen cost a fortune and has stunk that place out for 6 years. It’s far worse.

So true. Time after time people come on here and say they are not expecting brilliant footballers, just players who show commitment, desire and do their best every match and they will support them. Yet the two who fit that description-Allen and Brown get the most abuse. Meanwhile players like Tyrese and Powell who don't turn up for some matches get all the excuses in the world made for them. I am a big fan of both those players but they do lack the effort and commitment alledgedly required by Stoke fans to earn support (if you believe what you read on here).

I’m not sure there is when you combine the 14m, 50k/week and 6 years he’s been here. At least with Wimmer we barely had the pleasure of watching him.

I don't get the hate on Allen, he's the least of our problems I disagree, his inability to impose himself and control the midfield is a major reason we are on the back foot so often and losing games from winning positions.

It’s a thing for a proportion of Stoke supporters that’s true but don’t put everyone in the same boat. I want to watch good footballers. I can watch someone work their nads off for nothing if I found it interesting. They’d normally be earning thousands a year not a week. Can’t say it’s ever been something I’ve thought of doing with my leisure time.

Different issue one of opinion abuse very different than your opinion which is what footballs about but the op was abusive about a decent club man , I’d ecxpectca ban to follow it would have done had the same comment been made about the previous ceo for example

I like Allen and he’s been a great pro over the years and unlike some has never downed tools even when the going got tough. He did look better alongside Baker and had some good games towards the end of the season but he’s just too lightweight and easily bullied at this level. Add to that his lack of goals or assists and he just doesn’t offer enough to move us forwards. We need someone who’s physically stronger that can protect Baker when he wants to venture forwards. By signing him to a new contract we’re admitting that lower mid tables where we want to be.

It was a great chance to reset the midfield dynamic. Looks like we won't be doing that again. We seem obsessed on these good character types, yes they are good to have, but surely with Jageilka, Baker etc around the place we have enough. Just a pointless waste of a contract.

Swimming against the tide maybe but I like Joe.
I also think the abuse goes too far but that's a different debate perhaps.
That said, obviously, it all hinges on what we'd be forking out for ano contract vs what we could reasonably expect to get for the same or less wonga - in the era of FFP and with the steely determination required to get in the top six, there is little or no room for sentiment.
So, if it is indeed true that we can pick up up a better player, with a better character, as cheap as chips, in this post covid market and be better off, team and balance wise in the MF, then somebody tell me who, how much and if we have a realistic chance of getting him.
I'll wait ...

I'll wait ... I think Allen is OK, but not on the rumoured wages if true. If he could accept £15K per week it's a yes from me, but I honestly think we can bring someone in on that kind of money who isn't inferior to Allen at all. So not a too big deal as long as the contract on the table isn't a stupid one. Max two years on £15K per week, unless look somewhere else.

To be fair whoever is playing that role you wouldn't be expecting goals or assists Looking for someone to be positionaly disciplined, to read the game well, who can make a tackle and can pass the ball consistently to team mates Imo since Baker has arrived Allen has done all that Baker's one bad game was when Allen wasn't playing If its somebody else then fine but given it'll be a free transfer assuming we offer the same money we offer Allen (now not what he's been paid before) remain to be convinced we will get a better player If someone can suggest some examples of free transfers we can get who are better then that would really help
