I really don't get the clamour for Maddison. He's a good player, but no better than the other attacking players we've got, who'd all have to be used in wider areas in Southgate's set-up in big games. If we're losing, there'll be people like Foden, Saka, Grealish, Mount already on the bench. I'd be surprised if Southgate stuck him in. With Sterling being out of form there just might be room for him I wouldn't be against it really as the 26th man will probably not be used and the whole debate will be a lot of noise about nothing. But it's hard to see him coming off the bench in a knock-out game ahead of Mount, Foden, Grealish or Rashford, for example? But he might feel some pressure given the surprising volume of the Maddison campaign, just to avoid the hassle. But he did go months being ordinary. It’s not as simple as picking players on form and I don’t know why Southgate came out with that statement in the first place. Half this squad wouldn’t be on the plane if it came down to picking players on form |

Has done really well for Newcastle. However, it does remind me of the days when Darius Vassell would get a call up. Vassell was pretty good for England tbf. See no issue with calling up players in form for tournaments. Momentum is important. |
