I'd like an adult. In fact I would probably settle for anyone whose role model isn't the character played by Robin Askwith in all those early 1970s sex comedies. Mogg it is then He’s s bless him still in the 1870s Is he an adult? He seems like an overgrown kid running to nanny all the time from where I am sitting.

I think the more interesting thing will be not so much who gets the job at #10, but whether the Tories will look to find a way to change the culture of #10. Meaning whoever is appointed PM will have to commit to being more collegiate and less presidential in how they do the job. I reckon it was Blair (with Campbell) who created the Presidential PM approach which continued through Brown and Cameron but was expanded by May and then hugely by Johnson. Today, far too much power resides in political leaders and their humongous retinue of SpAds ( the growth industry of the 21st century) and not enough in the official organs of government. This would be a good time to correct that situation. Really interesting post. I absolutely agree that the culture of no10 must change and the next leader needs to understand that working together and being collegiate is vital to achieve anything positive for the country. Culture wars are the worst possible thing for this country as they divide, and everything the Johnson government did was about creating a culture war wherever possible.

The last thing the country needs is Rees-Mogg in charge. It would be more of the same that Johnson provided. Both are a pair of charlatans playing a character of acute Britishness in order to cover up the fact that they are thick as pigshit. They play different charachters of course, but the premise is the same.

Anyone who shared the cabinet room with Boris in the last 2 years has no moral credibility. Start there.

I’ve got a feeling it will be between Wallace and morudant Both will do for me it’s about time this country had someone in charge with a level of military discipline

I'm going with Tom Tugendhat, tough on China, very strong on world affairs, decorated officer and seems to play a straight bat. He voted to remain in the EU, which I no longer feel is an issue as trying to rejoin is way off the agenda, and frankly we need to do much better with our negotiations with the EU right now as the current stance is making things worse for business rather than better.

If the country had listened to Churchill during the 30s maybe war could have been averted, but no one was listening to him. scottmanning.com/content/churchills-earliest-warning-about-hitler/But somehow I doubt it; when people like Hitler, Hussain, Putin, etc. are "on a mission" there is little will stop them except force. The best future PM will be the one with the best advisors, something the last two have been sadly lacking. The presumption being that they take good advice.

Whatever his politics if he has some semblance of integrity that's what they will be looking for? we haven't had militarily types in top jobs for a while Paddy Ashdown was seen as a senior politician & despite his apparent integrity he ended up embroiled in scandal I think too many people in this country still equate Posh &/or military with having integrity & the relevant knowledge it's a sad indictment of tis country, we are utterly stifled by bowing down to posh people however despite all that if this chap is indeed a straight bat then fair enough

To be honest I'd be happy with anyone who seems vaguely normal. Admittedly that does narrow things down rather.
The thought that at one point it was even remotely possible that Ed Miliband could run the country made me shudder. Then Theresa "Do a dance" May and Boris Johnson happened...

His uncle was an EU Vice president, his wife is French and his father in law a French Diplomat, hardly surprising he voted to remain. If he becomes PM, will China follow up their threat of not doing business with him, how would that affect the UK ?

Ed Miliband is an intelligent and personable guy that was let down by a really bad campaign (remember the pledges etched in stone?) and vilified by the press (bacon sandwichgate, the vile attack on his dad etc) to the point where people thought he was incompetent. He wasn't/isn't but that's the power of the media, not everyone reads manifesto pledges, watches PMQ' and immerses themselves in politics, many people just see soundbites and headlines and form their opinion that way........

Is it military hour in the tory party?
Wallace, Tugenhadt and Baron?
Seems a bit of consensus on Wallace and Tugenhadt at being the best of a tory bunch.
I'll be imminently planning my exit from this God forsaken country if we get Javid, Rees-Mogg, Sunak, Patel, Raab etc...

I also think a lot of the intransigence towards Ed was that he paled in gravitas against his brother, who most felt should have been leader instead.

It’s in the Tories interest to go for someone less high profile and not someone who’s been regularly in the headlines like Sunak, Raab, Gove or Patel.
They need to step away from the current pantomime and have someone as a PM who’s looked on as a safe pair of hands that will appeal to the majority and not just the wealthy. I’d not really heard of him much before but Wallace does seem a good candidate. I think if he’s received well and has a good start they’d call an early GE which in all honesty I think they’d win because Starmer even splits Labour voters as has been shown by a recent heated debate on here
What do we need?
For me someone who’s a strong leader who’s big on law and order and genuinely cares about others and doesn’t have a huge ego and only interested in feeding it. A normal person would be a good start.
I genuinely don’t care what party they’re from I just want someone who leads his country with pride can be related too and does his best for its people. It feels like it’s been a long time since we’ve had that.

No great surprise.
A bald man will not become leader, so you can rule out Javid and Zahawi too, if they stand.
