paying off the national debt is a bit of a fallacy mate, look at what Atlee achieved with a national debt of 250% of GDP. It takes radical policy but it can be done....... Indeed he did, but back in those days the rich were made to pay 90% income tax to counterbalance the situation. This time, Truss seems to be wanting to take the Attlee route but let the top earners pay less. So guess who will be facing the next 50 years paying off a wartime-like situation? However, I see the only way for us to get through this terrible situation is to make it long-term because if we try to soak it up in one go it will bankrupt both families and industry and may even bring about riots like we saw with the poll tax. OS. Absolutely, the radical change I'm referring to wouldn't be undertaken by either the Tories or Starmer's Labour. But any austerity measures that are undertaken in the near future to "pay of the national debt" should see working class people and those marginalised in society out on the streets as far as I'm concerned, enough is enough........

So there we have it... insanity reigns.
for (at least) the fourth time in a row the tories elect the wrong leader.
Country to run ? lets choose a shiny suit instead of experience and common sense Brexit to handle ? lets choose a remainer Hard work required as country in the shit ? - lets choose the idle chancer. Finances in a mess ? - lets choose the thatcher wannabee with no grasp on economics
The only possible conclusion is the tory faithful are either thick or have no grasp on reality. Seven weeks to think about it and still fucking useless. Even the Stoke board have a better record than that...

I'm not sure even the British public are dumb enough to fall for her trickledown economics bullshit regardless any sticking plasters she locates in the meantime……are they? The papers will be calling her Thatcher-like by the end of the month and people will be lapping it up you watch........ By the end of the month? They've been suggesting she's channeling the ghost of Thatcher for the last six weeks. She's even dressed like Thatcher along the way.

Depends on whether it looks like they'll get re-elected. Nothing quietens a Tory back-bencher down more than the prospect of power!

I mean, even those not inclined to vote Tory could see that, at the very least, Sunak has something of a grasp on economics and tried to come across as human, you know, actually giving a shit about ordinary people. When he said it would be a moral failure for a Conservative government not to make things better for the poor, there was barely a murmur, as if that was something none of the Tories in the audience had ever considered as a responsibility before! As soon as Truss mentioned cutting taxes they went nuts! Terrifying that these people actually get to choose!

I expect that if she's not very good at something, especially something that's part of the job she will improve at it. If she's not able to improve at various skills she is going to drown very quickly. She will be facing challenges that few will have faced and will need to overcome them these at breakneck speed but if she can't improve at something she's now had lots of time to get better at we are screwed, really screwed.

Singing doesn't come naturally to a lot of people. Those people tend not to go into showbusiness. Successful speeches are a critical aspect of modern politics.

For some reason Liz Truss seems to be in the news a bit more this afternoon and therefore a slightly more topical subject of discussion.

She'll do something about energy prices, she'll have to........ True. And you're probably right that it'll be portrayed as "saving the nation", whereas precisely the same approach by a different government would be "borrowing and spending madness"

Perhaps it should not matter, but one mannerism that she has which really annoys me is....when she pauses and waits for applause , looking very pleased with herself, when she says something that she thinks they will want to hear....and then there is a small but noticeable gap , in which the audience realise it is their cue to applaud....and then do so.
I will reserve judgement until she has been in office for a bit....I'm not sure that ANY political personality at present has the gumption/ skill/ ability/ courage or vision to deal with the issues facing our country....but of course some would be better than others.
The system/ party politics has alot to answer for. Scary times.

Starmer isn't great but he's significantly better at public speaking than Truss and I think there is actually and upward trend for Starmer.
