It's an excellent piece. And the most galling thing about it all, is that they (the Tories) actually got the very people who would suffer the most, to vote for it and thus, ultimately make it a reality.
They were (and still are) absolutely laughing into their double whisky's at how they achieved it. It's one of the biggest (and most shameful) political swindels, in British history. It should never be forgotten.
A load of bleeding heart whining pish is what that is. It’s like a game of limp liberal bingo. Buzz words galore. Tripe and trite sentiment. Best read listening to Imagine. Odd response from someone who claims to be a liberal...or have you finally dropped the pretence?

Starmer was absolutely right several times about lockdowns. Had we locked down earlier when Starmer called it, the impact would have been less and far fewer deaths, less long covid, shorter nhs waiting list etc. You are a covid denier though so will never be convinced. You also don’t care about the environment. So obviously you disagree with any green policies. Starmer absolutely should not reveal his manifesto now. The good bits will be stolen. Whereas the tories are in power and have no solution to immigration issues, no solution to the cost of living crisis and no solution to the inflation issue. At least Starmer has announced an energy policy that will help with inflation. Unlike the tories. Can’t be arsed to read all that but Starmer supported every lockdown. Yes. But he wanted each one much earlier, which would have meant shorter lockdowns and less death and suffering and economic damage.

Boris and his cronies decided not to start the first one earlier like most other countries were doing cos it would've stopped their mates having fun/making money at the Cheltenham festival, I came back from a heavily locked down Spain to find nothing had changed in the UK. Thought it very odd at the time, then I realised with their further actions how utterly corrupt and self centered they are and it started to make sense.

At the start of this, all the political leaders across the UK, supported by the recommendations of their health “experts” were as one in not implementing lockdown, despite mounting media hysteria demanding we follow China’s approach of lockdown. And then, we had that weekend of news footage from Italy of folk lying on gurneys in hospital corridors and there was a mass shitting of pants across the country followed by lockdown. The political consensus lasted until the first lockdown restrictions started to ease and Elsie McSelfie couldn’t restrain herself from criticising Westminsters new “be alert “ message before adopting a similarly vague wording a couple of weeks later. Since then, all parties squirmed and twisted producing meaningless legislation after meaningless legislation of which the worst by far was the SNP closely followed by that Welsh fool. The Tories were not far behind in their daftness mind, as Johnson lost whatever spine he had.

Easy to criticise lockdowns, and lovely if unsurprising crowbarring in of Sturgeon there!, but how many might have died had there been no lockdowns?
We'll never know, but since multiple thousands of avoidable deaths have been attributed to the late implementation of lockdown at the start and Bozo himself said "Let the bodies pile high" in response to avoiding another lockdown, (which he did anyway!) it's not unreasonable to assume that the death toll, already one of the highest in Europe, would've been much, much higher.

Instead the Cheltenham Festival went ahead (the event I was attending in Spain was cancelled a good 2 weeks before we even flew) as did everything else. I came from a city in Spain where literally nothing was moving back to the UK where everything was carrying on as normal and continued to do so for 2 more weeks, it was ridiculous.

In the context of this thread the critical word above is “we”. The “we” being not just the Tories, but all the political parties and the medical “experts”. Your complaint about the timing of lockdown is best left to the Brexit thread. Where, we could explore the nature of the decision being ridiculous; because much data is now indicating that the decision to actually enter lockdown at all was ridiculous. But that’s for a different thread.

The fundamental driver for the UK Government’s approach to the then-looming crisis is encapsulated in Johnson’s speech from February 2020. He regarded the international response as an over-reaction and the likely damage to the economy of lockdown as too high a price to pay. Without getting into another debate about the rights and wrongs of what they did and didn’t do, there can be little doubt that the motivation for the decisions made at that time was money, not science.

I notice with some amusement that Finland's PM has taken a drugs test, in response to the video that surfaced recently of her partying. Wonder whether any of our own government will volunteer to do likewise?

Yes I know, I think my youngest was on a coach to Liverpool to see a mate and there was a load of Atletico fans on it. I suspect the tickets and flights were booked far in advance. However in Barcelona shops, bars, restaurants, tourist attractions etc were closed and the streets were deserted a full 2 weeks before anything was done in the UK.

I just don't understand why this process of choosing the next leader has to take so long? and why it is turned into such a soap opera. One that only 160,000 (many of whom don't even live in this country) can actually participate in.
Please put us out of our misery.
We don't have any fucking Government, apart from the odd random announcements about registration plates for bicycles or new measures for banning football fans which already exist.
I think the Tories could lose the election just on the basis that they have chosen a period of self indulgent navel-gazing over any attempt to address all the issues that are stressing people out on a day to day basis.

I suspect Frankie Boyle annoys those who don't like him primarily because he rips the piss out of their preferred brand of politics.
Always been one of the edgier and better comedians on TV imo and you can see from the reaction of his peers that they think so too.

It's not even that strong a Glasgow accent! Even after a decade living in Scotland I still struggled occasionally with a real hard Govan accent. They tend to mumble as well, which doesn't help!

He is taking the piss, not offering deep insight or, frankly, any insight. So, he tells jokes. Very crude ones, that are intended to shock. I quite like him. His comments about Sunak and, particularly Truss, did make me smile. But folk shouldn’t take political offence in the same way others shouldn’t take political inspiration.
