It depends how you crunch the stats, of course, but a quick scan of three different reports that I Googled put the UK between 13th and 16th in the lists of most tolerant / least racist countries in the world. Not a record to be ashamed of, but not quite measuring up to the likes of the three Scandinavian nations, Netherlands, Canada, NZ, Ireland and a few others. Certainly nothing to support the ‘most tolerant in the world’ claim that’s often chucked about. So based on your quick Google search, you would be happy to concede that we are "one of the most tolerant/least racist nations in the world?" I can't believe you actually feel the need to dispute such an obvious point. I'd suggest the nations you mention are much of a muchness. Is Ireland REALLY more tolerant than the UK? A Bengali friend of mine moved out to Cork a few years ago and the foreign community out there is tiny, he hates it and frequently gets racially abused, indeed in one instance, violently. Clearly thats one example and such incidents occur here, but he has certainly found Ireland a more racist society then the UK. I'd be happy to hear arguments in favour of Ireland being more tolerant and progressive than the UK. Either way, 13th out of 195 countries is a decent standing right? It depends on which metrics they choose to employ and how they're manipulated, but considering they’re three randomly-selected studies, there’s a degree of consistency in the conclusions that I wouldn’t have expected. If you’d asked me before I’d looked it up, based on nothing more than my own subjective (middle-aged white man’s) judgment, I’d have had us just sneaking into the top ten. So I wouldn’t argue that the UK isn’t a better place to be than many other countries for people belonging to ethnic minorities, but we’re some way from “…THE most progressive, tolerant nation on the planet” and the picture hasn’t exactly been improving recently. Racism aside, people have become much less tolerant of anything that doesn’t fit their world view. Like the majority of people here, I can’t speak with any authority about what it’s like to live anywhere other than the UK. I was slightly surprised to see Ireland so high the list, but I’m sure there’ll be quite a difference between the young, metropolitan class and the older, rural and provincial communities (very much like here), and I doubt the studies will have stretched too far beyond Dublin. I do have very close links to Denmark, though, and I can attest to it being on another level in terms of social progression and inclusiveness.

Pathetic from Johnson. I'm not a huge fan of Starmer as many know but he pitched it just right. This massive massive fuckwit just needs to go......

Pathetic from Johnson. I'm not a huge fan of Starmer as many know but he pitched it just right. This massive massive fuckwit just needs to go...... Here’s the thing. The opposition are quite happy for him to stay as PM. They know their prospects are more likely to be enhanced by him continuing as PM. The best way they can achieve that is to keep pressing for his resignation knowing that the Tory backbenchers are more likely to back Johnson while he is under severe attack from their opponents. It’s all a bit of a dance really. To paraphrase Cromwell… Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go. Only not just yet. Please continue as you are doing for the foreseeable bringing your party into further disrepute and destroying your chance of winning the next election.

Of course they'd be happy, Labour's bounce in the polls is built on quicksand and the moment Johnson goes it will no doubt flip (depending on who steps in of course). But if Starmer didn't actively call for this clowns resignation right now he'd be laughed at, he'll have to start coming up with something more than meaningless platitudes soon.......

#PMQs
Johnson is so desperate he's grovelling. He was even civil to Blackford! Two Stoke MPs spoke today. I think they're desperate too.

I have twice e-mailed Jack Brereton, on the 8th and 24th of December, asking for his views on the alleged parties in Downing St and the the mock press conference which saw officials laughing about them. He has responded to neither and I expect the same reaction to a further e-mail I sent today regarding the latest revelations of government guidance, and on this occasion the law of the land, being broken.

We don`t know that do we, he got the vaccine sorted sharpish. We could have the highest figure because we are honest with it. How many have died in Russia?

Romesh Ranganathan anyone? Well given that the tenure of a Tory Prime Minister is typically less than a League 2 manager these days then why not? Given the current run rate whoever they are will be turfed out inside two years.

A few of them are backing him now, although Gove hasn’t gone as far as typing his own direct message of support - just enough to fall either way when it comes down to it:

A few of them are backing him now, although Gove hasn’t gone as far as typing his own direct message of support - just enough to fall either way when it comes down to it: I remember in 2010 after the 2008 financial crisis, the government finances were in a mess and there was a view expressed that " This might be a good election to lose" because whoever won was going to face massive budget problems. The result was "a draw", which led to a coalition, and ten years of austerity that destroyed the LibDem support in the country. With the huge debt from the pandemic, the huge backlog in the NHS, unresolved Brexit issues, notably Northern Ireland, etc. I think if Johnson steps down (or pushed) I can see a number of potential candidates preferring to pass and wait for the next opportunity.
