Yep defo it’s the World Cup. And that's how the cunts at FIFA get away with it. They know we love football and we'll all watch! Bastards!

The only good thing about holding it in Qatar is that if it had been held in England (or anywhere else in the real world) it would already be over.

I was coming more at it from the angle of you're happy to tell everyone else how they should live and what values you should adopt. Then ride roughshod over those principles when there's something in it for you. And then try and work back from where you find yourself with a flimsy defence of your position that makes you look even more ridiculous. And as for Gary Neville... And I think that’s nonsense. You don’t have to live a life of poverty to be a socialist. It’s just a crap insult. It's a bit more than a crap insult. It's a lie that is as old as the hills and one which is (a) routinely trotted out by the right; and (b) goes largely unchallenged. Is it possible to access power and influence without money? Yes. Does money stack the odds in your favour? Massively. Some would argue that it is not only not hypocritical for a socialist to accumulate wealth, it's a duty. Ultimately it is not whether you have money, it's how you use it. On the much narrower question of Gary Neville - like most things, hypocrisy is a spectrum and virtually all of us are probably somewhere on that spectrum. If he were genuinely going to call out Qatar as part of his broadcasting duties, then I would say fair play. But that seems highly unlikely, so Hislop's position was in my view pretty sound.

I wasn't going to watch the group stages, but it turns out I'm holidaying in Morocco anyway, which could be interesting from a Moroccan perspective. I wonder how the African countries competing in the World Cup where migrant workers in Qatar are from feel about all this? Cameroon, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia and Ghana. Would the national football associations/teams fail to speak out because they don't want to spoil any relationship with FIFA? When actually if FIFA cared about the game of football, I reckon a really good legacy from the Qatar World Cup would've been funding for a 2026 World Cup joint hosted with the likes of Senegal, Ghana and Nigeria. A quick google shows media from African countries that qualified for Qatar have been reporting on the human rights abuses e.g. Pulse Ghana: www.pulse.com.gh/news/local/suffering-human-rights-abuses-and-deaths-the-story-of-migrant-workers-in-qatar/9d5wnl9

Might be coming into a spot of gardeners leave but am far more enthused about painting the wee lass room, the bathroom and the fence outside than validating this bollocks.
No doubt will fold like a cheap suit at the knockouts after incessant propaganda reminding me the 350 local Qatar folk are lovely football fans just like me as sponsors get increasingly fractious over folk not giving many fucks.
Couldn't even be arsed with a predictor or sweep stake this time around

I'm beginning to wonder if it will be a force for good(ish) but not in the way expected - pretty much everyone I've spoken to is apathetic about the whole thing and if that's reflected in viewing figures the sponsors will have twitchy arseholes.

I think once it starts it will be a World Cup like any other apart from the peculiarity of the time of year.
There's always a back story on the run up. South Africa - the stadiums won't be ready. Russia - trained hooligan gangs. South Korea - they swept all the beggars off the streets. This one - LGBT rights.
Once there are 3 games of football a day to talk about that will be what captivates people.
I've observed this every time since 1970.

There will certainly be that element, and once games are there to look forward to it will take our mind away from some of the more pressing troubles back home. I get the feeling it won't be quite the same - how full will the stadia be ( Empty ?)? Will people really want to dodge out into the rain to watch in some pub/fan area when there's a cosy lounge back home? It's been the quietest build up I can remember. Also things like no holidays and the build up to Christmas will dampen some enthusiasm. It'll be different for sure.

I totally get the time of the year thing and the implications it has for the way people will view the matches. I still contend the story will become the matches.

I was torn, but after reading a few more articles about various goings on I’ve decided I’m going to give the whole tournament a miss. I’m going to take in as many local non-league games as possible over the next 4/5 weeks to compensate…….

When it's done the big cheeses at Fifa, supporters across the world, players and managers across the world will all just breathe a sigh of relief it's all over. The next shitfight will be the format of 2026 with 48 teams.
