To be fair to Gary Neville, the producers will have chosen him precisely because of the forthcoming World Cup and his attendance as a commentator. Given that HIGNFY has rehearsals he will have been awaiting the inevitable questions from Hislop but wouldn't have known how far Hislop and perhaps Merton but Hislop mostly would have taken digs at him, or how - witty, sarcastic or serous. He didn't do it for free.

If we do win it, I'll be celebrating it as hard as I would if it was a World Cup anywhere else in the World. Me too. Be typical to win a tainted one though. All the best teams in World football will be there (Italy aside). It won't be tainted from a football point of view, so on that score, I wouldn't give a fuck.

If we could win this or the next I'd much prefer the next. This one stinks.

Is there anyone here who thinks the world cup in Qatar is a positive thing? I don't mean an ignore the problems because there's nothing you can do about it mindset. I mean, does anyone feel it's a good thing that Qatar are hosting it? Are the Grand Prix in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia a good thing mate along with Anthony Joshua etc going to fight in Saudi Arabia…..I don’t see this much outcry at that?……and I’ll bet many on here denouncing this gather round their TVs on a Sunday and shell out for PPV and/or jet off to Dubai for an exciting break Why is it that it’s always football who has to lead the way? I’m not defending Qatar it’s a disgrace I’m just pointing out the hypocrisy Ive never watched a Grand Prix or Boxing match (apart from a Ali fight when I was about 9) because I dislike both sports, if that's what they are. You definitely have a strong point about hypocrisy and inconsistency though. What I would say is that we each have to draw a line somewhere, and one of my issues is with the hypocrisy of FIFA, spouting human values and at the same time completely flouting them in a whole load of directions. I know its nothin new, we could point to loads of hypocrisies in all sports and all walks of life both contemporary and historically, and some people try to do that, but like I say there is a whole list of issues here which are particularly sickening for me, and each has to draw their line.

it's not a good thing and imo a real stain on football, especially FIFA. I'm all for taking major events around the globe, but there's quite a lot of vulgar around Qatar World Cup. The fact they're resorting to accusing others of racism and then demanding "no lectures" instead of trying to win people over is case in point.
There will always be bad people involved in sport, there will.always be sportswashing going on. But you don't have to actively take part. Just because you have China the Olympics you don't then have to do everything the Saudis want. You can say no. You can expect better.

I thought Arsene Wenger had straightened FIFA out with his "genius"? We were going to have a WC every two years so that countries like Somalia, N. Korea, Sudan, Chad and Yemen can get into the act.
Tune into the next World Cup in The Congo! Closing festivities, the 2 top teams will be barbequed in the center cirtle! We could have a "fan lottery" where all hotel rooms are raided and the winners are arrested to appear on their own episodes of 'Locked Up Abroad." Nightly executions in the downtown areas for everyone's viewing pleasure. Throwback Saturdays, where swastika tattoos and lightning-bolt SS insignia are free at the local shops.
Enjoy a "freedom burger" at the stadium made from the meat of insurgents. Flame-thrower training & pipe-bomb making classes for the kiddos! First 10,000 fans in line get their own custom, one of a kind World Cup balaclava. And one lucky sweepstakes winner gets a free month at Al Quaida's training camp in scenic Yemen.
And we need to have a World Cup in the southern US so that the Ku Klux Klan can have a shot at hosting as well. Just to let things even out, we'll let ANTIFA host one too. The Decade of the Dirtbag is well under way.
I can see the T-shirt: "I survived the World Cup in South Sudan!"

I can't verify these numbers, but they're even higher than i imagined.
It works out at roughly 5 deaths for every 2 minutes of football played at this WC.
Extremely disgusting.

6 minutes of Klopp talking absolute bollocks. Journalists have been investigating and highlighting this perverse corrupt decision to give Russia and Qatar the world cup both before and since the decision was made. It's a lie to say it's not the case.

He would be better telling the truth really as it would stop them from taking the piss..... "I'm not really arsed about what goes on in Qatar or any other Middle East country as it affects my life in no way, shape or form. I'm going over there to commentate on a football tournament because that is my job". That would shut them all up instantly. It would fuck his champagne socialist image though. I actually like Gary Neville. However, he's painted himself in a corner for stuff like this. I truly hope this world cup is a disaster - I've got a nagging feeling this is the one we'll actually win though! I love the insult champagne socialist. It’s so bad. “You’re rich and actually want to help poor people, what an idiot you are Gary”. It just doesn’t make any sense. Like compassion is something to be sneered at. Which is says if all about those that use it.

Then ride roughshod over those principles when there's something in it for you. And then try and work back from where you find yourself with a flimsy defence of your position that makes you look even more ridiculous. And as for Gary Neville...

The Germans have no problem showing their thoughts. You can guarantee that the PL/Sky would not let those huge banners be put up in the first place

While it’s a fair point to criticise other sports which have taken place in the Middle East its not fair to criticise other fans who have strongly held views on this, although its not clear who you are calling hypocrites, the fans or the sports. I don’t really follow any other sport other than football so thankfully I’ve never had to “shell out for PPV and/or jet off to Dubai for an exciting break”. Thousands of migrant workers didn’t die in these other sports, although I don’t know about corruption in F1 or boxing. I’ve followed England home and away for the last 18 years (I have 160 total caps),I didn’t go to any of the qualifies & I have no interest in going to Quatar and I won’t be watching any of the matches, although this will be tough. While one poster on this thread said that no one will care if you don’t watch, I’m sure the footballing authorities and advertisers will be watching closely the viewing figures. FIFA’s statement this week shows that they are worried. I too have followed England all over the world both football and cricket ( still do in a fashion ) but that doesn’t mean I’m wrong with the hypocrisy bit It’s just always football that has to fight the fight If it were just about human rights you might have a point. However, the corruption involved in the awarding of the competition & the resultant death of the migrant workers makes football uniquely responsible. The footballing authorities have tried to underplay these two factors – that is hypocrisy.
