Was before my time but was Argentina in '78 like this in terms of the intimidation, shutting down of dissent etc?

Was before my time but was Argentina in '78 like this in terms of the intimidation, shutting down of dissent etc? No recollection of that, although the hype around a world cup back then was significantly lower than it is today - and in addition England did not of course qualify. However, sports-washing is obviously nothing new - for example the 1936 Munich Olympics, and quite possibly long before - so I can only assume that the regime sought to present a sanitised image. On a slightly different note, there were all sorts of suggestions of skulduggery about match fixing (eg the 6 goal defeat of Peru by the hosts) but I don't think they were ever proved. In fact I doubt FIFA would have found it convenient to investigate. What I do have a memory of from time to time is film of mothers trooping round one of the big squares in Beunos Aires, holding pictures of their "Disappeared" sons. Whether that was allowed during the tournament I cannot remember.

I would bet any opposition would have been dealt with harshly. Remember though, Argentina were awarded 78 before the coup so Fifa didn't give it to a murderous regime.

The video in that could well have been shot in Delhi or Mumbai Not sure of their chant of 'Southgate is our super coach' 'Sterling is our superstar' 'Pickford is our super keeper' Will it get any traction? I will listen out for it during England games. Could it work at SCFC? 'Alex Neil is our super coach' 'Browney is our superstar' 'Bursik is our super keeper' Give it a go lads

The video in that could well have been shot in Delhi or Mumbai To be fair Northers...The Daily Mail and Tik Tok users are hardly credible sources . The whole anti Qatar thing has changed nothing and the I'm not watching a second of it brigade . Desperate for more undermining stories every day. The USA got similar anti stories leading up to it, obviously for different reasons in some cases but turned out to be an excellent World Cup.

Was before my time but was Argentina in '78 like this in terms of the intimidation, shutting down of dissent etc? The tournament was awarded before the shenanigans there but was used to bring a wave of calm by those in charge over a very disrupted country. Sports journalist were dictated what to write in magazines and papers , were kidnappings including family of a player and of course talk of bribery, especially Quiroga the Peruvian keeper who put in a shambolic display in a 6-0 defeat to Argentina, a game they had to win by 4 to qualify. He was actually Argentinian born and whilst a bit crazy, nicknamed El Loco he was a good keeper. Famously fouled Lato think it was of Poland on the half way line. Was a British ref in charge, possibly Pat Partridge who looked totally bemused as he admitted after he thought a fan had come on the pitch and burst into laughter when he booked Quiroga who bowed down to him . Can remember watching it at my Grandfather's house in Ireland and loving it, was only a kid but first WC I remember bits of. The winning of the World Cup clouded a lot of what was going on in the country at the time for the people of course .

I did a real life perplexed emoji face.

I completed it so none of those shenanigans Might have been 94 I always remember our headmaster walking around with the Kunde sticker on his back in 82 and someone had tampered with his name slightly in Tip ex.

Al Owairan scored that rather good goal

Think I watched in a pub in New York, maybe Florida. Not a Saudi in sight celebrating with his pint of Schlitz and a young local filly under his arm in the whole place
