I used to be a republican but have changed my view over the last 20 years. Jordan Peterson's explanation of the role of the monarchy and our Constitution surprised me: the monarch is the most powerful person in the common wealth but only as long as she does not use that power. Should she do so then parliament has the power to remove them. It's a fabulous Catch 22 that allows them to rule just so long as they don't rule! The problem with elected presidents is that it would drag our politics down deeper into the political more far quicker than it is already. I would not want a republic on that basis. Besides who really cares about the monarchy? I don't They represent an archaic class system in this country whereby unearned wealth somehow equates to power and privilege, I don't give a shit about any of the individuals to be fair. An elected president doesn't have to be the alternative, there's nothing to suggest we have to go down that particular route.......

At least ours in the main do somthing good. They also do as much good as the elected classes which is sometimes another closed shop

Unfortunately there's very little chance of us getting rid of them.
(only 22% in favour of abolition at time of posting)

But surely nobody is remotely surprised.
I think the Queen could announce that Andrew is a raging paedo who's receiving as much support and counselling as possible and sincerely regrets any harm he may have done to kids during his lifetime of noncing with Epstein and those figures would change not a jot...

Unfortunately there's very little chance of us getting rid of them. (only 22% in favour of abolition at time of posting) If we did ever have a national referendum on it, there'd be more chance of getting rid of them if Ireland became united. The Ulster loyalists wouldn't have a vote.

I'm not overly fussed either way. But there is know doubt Buckingham Palace would make a cracking weatherspoons. It'd be a bastard of a trip to the khazi though.

I'm no fan of the monarchy, but I'd rather we kept it than run the risk of us becoming a one party state where it could, for example, pass a law saying we don't need another election for 20 years.
The only was round that would be to have a written Constitution similar to something like the USA, with checks and balances built in.

If we all work really hard maybe one day we could be just like them.

re: the royals, I'm sure they're average/OK/decent people BUT I don't see how/why they should be allowed to hide behind their cowardly protocol 'never explain, never complain' ...... particularly when we pay them £69 million per year to carry out 'essential duties' they regularly make half a billion per year and they're worth 13 billion. The rest of us, on very modest salaries/wages, have to fill out forms/plans/reviews detailing absolute minutae of our tasks/performance but they don't have to bother? Must be lovely for 'em!!

Wouldn't suddenly abolishing the monarchy create a power-vacuum stronger than a Dyson? Not sure I like the timing of this...Earth's inhabitants are occupied with polarization and general shithousery at the moment. We're better at launching missiles, not governments.
Always thought abolishment could eventually happen, just not in my lifetime. In the US we're good at sticking our noses in places like this where we don't belong, so will limit my comment.
But... on the off chance: Should we be getting Queen Latifah into a finishing school?

Perhaps there could be an annual lottery where everyone in the country can be appointed to royal roles for 12 months. If we're going to have royalty, it should be open to all.

Just watched an episode of ‘The Crown’ and have just realised that the bit of the national anthem that goes ‘na na na na na’ before ‘send her victorious...’ is not normally sung.
Did anyone else know that?
