Weve had chips in the cuisine for years and years, hardly anyone was fat in the 70's and early 80's, it's only since supermarkets and fast food joints and takeaways have come along that people are getting fat and obese. Chips in moderation aren't an issue, it's how many times you have them is an issue, and some chips aren't even potatoes these days, just manufactured mush that looks like one. How many in the 70s and 80s could afford to eat as much junk food as they can now? Value packs of chocolate, crisps etc are so cheap in comparison to a person’s salary. A few huge things have happened in the last couple of generations: 1) women took more and more full time jobs 2) companies likes Cadbury realized the adage that capitalism is about turning a luxury into a necessity. I don’t blame women for 1. I blame society for not figuring out how to combat that and I blame food companies for making increasingly worse “ready meals” and pretending that they are good for you. Instead of home made meals, families working long hours spend less time in the kitchen and try to make do with what they can. As for companies like Cadbury, they’ve made fortunes off getting children fat and hoping that they’ll stay that way as adults. Not a criticism, as it may just be me misreading what you meant, but just to clarify the line "I don't blame women for 1. I blame society for not figuring out how to combat that" Are you saying society should have found a way to combat women having full time jobs or that men in society should have realised they have to do their bit in the kitchen as well?

Both really. I’m not saying that men don’t cook, though there are still countless studies out there that show that men cook less than women (on average) in a long-term relationship. More though, the point is that we’ve gone from having a family set up where one person has a primary task of making as healthy and nutritious a meal as they can afford, to one where both partners are working their asses off and food becomes more of a secondary consideration. This has led to the amount of time in the kitchen decreasing drastically. That can be seen with the huge amounts of ready meals that are in production. To improve the quality of people’s lives, women entered the workplace. Knowing this, food companies made lots of ultra processed food that are full of sugar and salt (because otherwise they don’t last and taste like crap). That’s a societal shift that is now quite engrained in both the UK and the US.

Ah ok, so society to combat it, as in food companies acknowledge the shift but still make relatively nutritious products BECAUSE of that rather than processed junk, as cheap as possible to make a quick buck. I agree. Only wanted to clarify as I originally (and in case others may) misunderstood and read it as a "women should be in the kitchen rather than at work" point. Glad I asked rather than doing my usual and just diving straight in

We're excellent at affordable delicious food that's shite for you.
My American fiancée was shocked by the Wetherspoons breakfast. It's way better than Denny's for less than half the price.

I've reduced my Wetherspoons breakfast order from the full monty to the breakfast roll (with a hash brown if I'm feeling particularly indulgent, which is nearly always), it's made me feel slightly less guilty 🙂

She couldn't believe her eyes as one of the locals lined up 3 jars of Guinness to go with their bacon.

It is a bit of a shocker to me how many are tucking into booze in there early in the day, the one in Cambridge is the same tho, I stick to the free tea and coffee 😃

All of the sugar is bad enough......in the US, they introduced high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) into the food chain back in the 1960s......did that show up in the UK? Pretty much in everything that comes in a jar.

Pretty much in everything that comes in a jar. Fructose is a big problem. It’s something I actually research. The body just does not need it in the amounts found in food. The main fructose transporter in the small intestine gets flooded after one soda, so it seeps into the colon in a fairly unaltered form. Unlike glucose, the colon has not need for fructose. Farmers do though, which is why they lobbied the government so hard in the 80s. By the 80s, fructose replaced sucrose as the primary additive in things like sodas. Why? Not because it’s better for anyone but because the corn industry was on its knees. Soda, in general, is a devil I believe that hides in plain sight. The regular sodas contain so many calories and sugar. The diet ones contain sweeteners that are likely carcinogenic. Beyond that though, they both maintain either a sugar high or a desire for sweet foods. They perpetuate unhealthy eating habits.
