Because we mostly eat too much crap, processed fatty food and no-one is interested in doing anything about it. Diet is appalling in this country everybody else can see it. If anyone mentions Good Diet in this country its the old "nanny state" bollocks. 12 months of pandemic where immunity has been critical factor and no emphasis on Diet at all from the Government even though it could save a lot of lives and a lot of NHS money. Good Diet = Good Immunity system. Fairly basic stuff. Its definitely led to higher Covid death rates as well as all other multiple ill health complications. Its ok though the drugs will work! Sermon over ...well you did ask?

‘Peasant food’ as it were, is basically non-existent in this country. Our culinary identity is only up for discussion for TV chefs. In other countries and cultures the food of the poor is nutritious and often bastardised by the hipsters eventually. I have nothing to prove this apart from intuition but for all those in poverty in England, I imagine it’s a case of cooking what is cheap and easy, or a take away.

At no doubt considerable cost that could be gainfully used elsewhere.

I've actually lost weight on lockdown I've not drunk as much and eaten better. Easy cheap convenience food is the issue not sure many nowadays prepare fresh vegetables etc. I dispare at the long queues at McDonald's in Goldenhill when I drive past.

I live by the golf course and work just the other side of the roundabout at Reginald Mitchell way. I have to drive to work as I need my car there in case I need to visit customers, before the lazy bastard comments come out. I can get stuck there and it can take me longer clear the McDonald’s traffic than anything else.

Anyone know if other countries have the same addiction to pop that seems to affect a lot of residents of this country?
I see a fair few people walking back from the shops where I live and every 'larger' family seems to be carrying at least one 6 pack of big bottles of pop.
I think a wise allocation of funds would be to have some mobile health monitoring stations around the city, motivation is a problem but when people are faced with how high their BMI is, how high their cholesterol is or how knackered their lungs are they may realise of their own accord that it's time to take some action, obviously advice would need to be available at such places.

Alcohol, crap food, inactivity, laziness, apathy. You got that lot spot-on, Fel - all those widespread facets of today's everyday life in the UK are horrendous and the general state of Joe Public's health has definitely gone downhill at a terrifying speed since Macdonalds first opened over here - when was it? Late 1970s or thereabouts? Ditto KFC and other burger places. As for the fizzy drinks, they're doubly bad - they pile on the pounds and rot people's teeth.

The NHS should sort there own staff out first Nail on head I can remember at work, years ago, a new nurse started and decided to start running 'Stop Smoking' classes. He, however, had no intention of kicking the habit himself - he was on 60 a day!

We put crap in our food. Take yoghurt. A potentially healthy food. Here, most yoghurts in the supermarket are full of sugar. In a French supermarket by way of example, their yoghurts will contain far less sugar.
Ditto for things like ketchup, tinned soup, pasta sauces, even bread etc. Full of sugar, full of salt. And our sugar free products here are all full of sweeteners which are just as bad if not worse. In France their average everyday products have far less crap. Not sure if it is the same elsewhere in Europe.
Plus if something here is described as healthy, it’s an excuse to up the price.
The government should give tax incentives to healthy and natural food providers.
