I did - good read, beautiful bird and tragic story. Will keep an eye out though, you never know. Guess I'll keep an ear out as well - that's a distinctive call. Not sure how they can say its ststus. If one hasnt been sighted since the 40s are they extinct. 🤔 Yes I'm thinking the worst, but would love to be proved wrong.

Came quite close up to a Heron today.
Canal walking towards a lock the bird was standing very still on the side of the lock overflow on the opposite bank.
We just stood there staring at each other for a while.

We just stood there staring at each other for a while. I hate herons! Any gardens with a fishpond that isn't netted will soon find it completely emptied by the local heron. Mine have got more netting than Fort Knox, so all the little dears (xxx) are splashing about in complete safety.

Ponds bring lots of life to the Garden i vrt you have a few Frogs etc? If your lucky the odd Shrew or Vole.

Had one fly past us quite close on Sunday down the canal under the over hanging trees, almost gliding as it went by, majestic birds when like that

Couple of pictures a question and reports. Not really seem too much round here this species. Common Sandpiper. Must have been special as a few had camera's out for it. Now for question. Is this just a mutation is it a standard domesticated Dove? Onto the reports. River Weaver near is it Wincham. Otters are on there. I was at Flashes sat saw bit and left. Some chaps who were there sat afternoon got a lucky sight. An Osprey overhead some managed to get photographs of it.

For you owl experts out there would this field be a spot where they would hunt? Crops growing. small photNot really, the thing with crop fields is they go under the plough every year so the vole populations never build up in any numbers. The same with heavily grazed cow fields, when the ground softens the hooves go in too deep. However the field the other side of the fence looks more to an owls liking Walk that fence line and inspect the base of the posts for owl pellets. They do like fence posts to sit on. Good luck. Ps get searching round the hay fields when they start turning ready for cutting July, August time depending on the summer.

That would be something else seeing Ospreys flying over regularly, I've only ever seen the red kite 3 times up here but every time I just found myself looking up until it was out of sight. I know there's a nest at Llyn Brenig so not a million miles away, plus any un paired youngsters will be up and down looking for a mate and a new nesting sight. I think the work these wildlife trusts do is remarkable.

Where the river Dyfi flows past them it's freshwater but empties into Cardigan bay at Aberdovey where I am and becomes tidal. It's easy to see why they keep returning with all that on their doorstep.

A number of years ago a friend woke to find a local heron standing beside his pond with one of his prize coy carp nestled in its beak. He went out and purchased a very realistic and pricey plastic heron as he was told that herons don’t feed in pairs, anyway after positioning the plastic heron beside his pond he woke the following day or so after to find the local heron sitting snugly alongside his new plastic friend 🤣
