Had absolutely no idea he actually made a couple first team appearances for Man Utd before making the typical Royal Antwerp loan move. Not many players can say they made their debut at 18 for Man Utd. Ferguson didn't want him to leave when he did either.
What a player. SCFC legend.

Watching Ryan and how he has conducted himself is one of the reasons I am proud to be a Stoke supporter. Thank you Ryan a role model I will always proud to use for my son.

Can't help but feel devastated. I know that's a ridiculous thing to say, given everything going on in the world, but I am genuinely upset by Ryan leaving. Watching the tributes and videos from all the players over the years has just brought it home even more. The respect and admiration all those ex teammates have for him speaks volumes. There won't be another club stalwart that makes the same impact as him during my lifetime, of that much I'm sure, and I'm only 37! We went on such an unbelievable journey. Promotion in itself was so special, but everything else that followed was the stuff of dreams. Ryan Shawcross epitomised everything that is wonderful about our club. Brillaint player, outstanding leader, humble human being. He was Mr Stoke City. Genuinely gutted to see him leave 😢

A fantastic professional who should have achieved so much more on the international scene. Despite being vilified to the extent it could have affected his career, he didn’t let it bother him and he went from strength to strength. It’s a shame we haven’t seen so much of him over the last couple of years but hopefully a spell in the sun will do him the world of good and he can have a decent crack at it over there.
Captain, leader, legend.

Feels like the end of an era. A genuinely top top defender and one of, if not the best the club has had during modern times. Should have had a BIG career for England but was scandalously overlooked by successive managers. I wish him the best of luck at Miami and hope he returns to the club when he retires from playing the game.

Just had time to catch up on this wonderful thread and what can you add? For me what makes him different was that England appearance, we'd waited so long for it, it was totally deserved, the manager fucked him about a bit, then he was 'done' whilst cold, by one of the best players in the world. I was fucking gutted, maybe it was living in London during Ramseygate, hearing all that bollocks about him but I was genuine gutted for him that night. Never felt like that over a player before, since, and probably never will again and that's a measure of the man. A man known by just his first name, a man known as skipper, captain, leader and legend just like the pantheons of the past. One of the very, very, best. The tributes from Ric and Ethers in particular expose the myth that you have to be demonstrative and bawl people out to be a leader on the pitch.....Seasoned pros can sniff a charlatan out at a 1000 paces,Ryan walked the walk and set the bar high through integrity, professionalism and on the pitch performance. I think Gerrard was very good to RS at the England training camp after his selection in the aftermath of Ramseygate? Some great comments, evincing oodles of respect: 'special group' 'Mr Tony Pulis' it's almost as if players erroneously labelled as troublesome or difficult just want some proper leadership to respond to. Hopefully a testimonial will be an opportunity for the whole gang to feature in the red and white stripes again,God knows how long it'll be before times like that come along again. The picture of RS and TP lining up for the Cup Final makes me want to blub....

It feels like end of a era with Ryan leaving. The last of the promotion team leaving. He is mr Stoke city to me and always will be. A super captain who lead by example. Wish him all the best in his new venture and hope to see him as Stoke city manager one day.

Had the pleasure of meeting him at the end of season awards, first season in The Prem (at The Brit). It was a brillaint night. The only event where all the fans got to properly mix with with players, before the club shifted it to Kings Hall in Stoke, and stuck most of the fans up in the cheap seats. It was a brilliant night and the players spent so much time mingling and chatting with the fans. Ryan of course was outstanding and had plenty of time for everyone. Absolute legend.

A sad day, as many have said he’s the last link to many life events, My Dad who took me to Stoke from the 70s passed away in February 2013. Those early years in the Prem were great, my son, Dad and Aunty went to games and Ryan was one we all agreed was a legend. my Dad was a centre half who towards the end came to the view that he was up there with Dennis! There was no higher complement!
The best of luck Ryan, thanks for the memories!!

Loving all these videos from ex-players. Some proper, favourite players in there. We were so lucky to have such a good squad to get up, stay up, and prove everyone wrong. People laugh about DNA, but that lot had it boatloads Obviously, right from the start, as a teenager signing for Stoke, Ryan Shawcross had the type of DNA that you mention. It’s incredible how we went from signing so many players of the right attitude to signing so many that had no pride or respect for the club, despite the incredible riches they were paid. When you factor in the transfer fees, signing on fees and wages of those latter types, many of them have probably cost similar, or even more, compared to the total outlay on Ryan over the years, for zero return.

I was furious about that decision. NO Man City players appealed. Couldn't get to sleep, tossed and turned all night, all because of Alan Wiley

Supporter for over 50 years and I think he will go down as one of my all-time favourites – if not the favourite. In a generation of greedy Snowflakes, he has been a giant for our club and led by example from start to finish.
Many memorable games, but I loved the one where he kept Aguero in his back pocket(at City’s ground) and my first memory of him was in a game away at Blackpool where he looked like a giant on the pitch and nobody could get near him in the air.
Part of the legendary Berlin wall – and part of all our recent great times. Could not wish him more luck going forward and thank him from the bottom of my heart, for giving his every time he took to the field.
Forever a Stokie – Thank you, Ryan Shawcross

Players like Ryan don't come around very often, and he should be classed in the same "Legend" category as Denis Smith and a few select others. A loyal servant who by his own admission absolutely loved every minute at the club and didn't just jump ship for riches eleswhere. A real inspiration on the pitch who put his body on the line for the club, and a gentlemen on and off the pitch who always led by example. The tributes from other past players show the high regard they have for him. Ryan's leaving marks the real end of an era for the club and fans, but hopefully he will come back for a testimonial in the near future so that we can properly say "Thank You", and it would be fantastic if he came back after his playing days are over and played a role in the coaching set up. Goodbye Ryan, thanks for all the wonderful memories, good luck to you and your family in your new adventure, and genuinely hope to see you back at Stoke City in the future. LEGEND !
