The way he said "Captain" just makes me want to grab him and kiss him on his forehead Mama is, and always will be, one of my favourite players in 40 odd years of home and away with Stoke. I've met him a few times and he's the nicest man on the planet His goal against Villa will live with me forever. Me and my old man met him on the car park outside the main stand back when we played Bristol City in 2008. Back then they used to park there then walk round to go into the ground. He’d scored 2 goals so far that season and we got chatting and my dad said ‘youre going score 2 goals today’. The rest is history. He always had time to stop and talk. A great human being.

Absolute legend for Stoke City and was the physical embodiment of everything the club and support stand for.
Thanks for all his service over the years and as many have said his legacy will be life long alongside so many other greats.
I really hope everything works out over in Miami and he can stay relatively injury free over the autumn of his career.
Very best wishes.
Neddy

A great player and leader who showed loyalty and humility seemingly so rare these days. Made me proud to be Potter. Wishing him and his family great times ahead and looking forward to the opportunity to say thankyou properly at the ground .

Ryan has just been a pointless answer on pointless , question was players who have scored 5 own goals or more in the premier league.

Loving all these videos from ex-players. Some proper, favourite players in there. We were so lucky to have such a good squad to get up, stay up, and prove everyone wrong. People laugh about DNA, but that lot had it boatloads

Just catching up after being offline all day.
If there is one player who e(potter)mises what Stoke City is about to me its Ryan. What a player, what a captain, and a true gent. A true legend of this football club and I can’t wait to see him back in the future.
Build the statue!!

Just had time to catch up on this wonderful thread and what can you add? For me what makes him different was that England appearance, we'd waited so long for it, it was totally deserved, the manager fucked him about a bit, then he was 'done' whilst cold, by one of the best players in the world. I was fucking gutted, maybe it was living in London during Ramseygate, hearing all that bollocks about him but I was genuine gutted for him that night. Never felt like that over a player before, since, and probably never will again and that's a measure of the man. A man known by just his first name, a man known as skipper, captain, leader and legend just like the pantheons of the past. One of the very, very, best.

It be a nice gesture from the club that the players to wear Red armbands with the number 17 for the game tomorrow against Luton.
Definitely a legend who was unfortunate to be plagued by his back injury, but was an ambassador for Stoke. Best wishes to Ryan & his family. 😊

Ryan epitomised the era in which he captained the team.
Underdog DNA No quarter given Body on the line They shall not pass Up yours Arsene We are Stoke
He went about his role quietly yet strongly, with dignity and gravitas.
So many epic memories. A true Stoke legend.
Thanks Skipper 👊

A modern day Denis Smith .. that’s a massive compliment , but a bigger one ..is he stands on his own merits ..a modern day Shawcross .. able to sit at the same table and be compared to some of our of true greats, able to hold his head high in the knowledge in years to come it’s him who players will need to be compared against to be a true great here ..
Like Denis his international recognition was greatly overlooked , perhaps as distribution , so necessary at international level , wasn’t his greatest strengths .. but for running through a brick wall or forming an brick wall himself there was no finer ..perhaps thats the missing ingredient for England ..body , soul and god knows what else put on the line countless times to carry the club over the line ..and if body , soul , blood , snot and sweat wasn’t enough at the heart of defence , he'd chip in with an important goal ..or cause mayhem in the other sides box
Good luck for the future ..a preseason in Miami in 2 years time would be fitting , if only to show just how far I’d go to see you just one more time
Our captain ..our human brick wall

We have had some truly great players, people and characters at Stoke City during the near 60 years I have been following this club.
I think it is the measure of Ryan that he sits comfortably alongside the best of them.
I wish him and his family only good things whatever they do, wherever they go
Hope to see you again in ST4 before too long

The promotion season is one of the best years I’ve ever had and I missed about 3 games home and away. Amazing memories and Ryan was a huge part of that.
He grew as we grew. He was a colossus of a centre half and read the game brilliantly against some of the best strikers in the premier league.
I’ve watched Stoke for almost 30 years and only shed a tear due to a player leaving twice. Ricardo Fuller and our captain, Mr Ryan Shawcross.

Such mixed emotions today. Absolutely gutted that our captain, our leader and a true, true legend has left us. However such immense pride in the fact that Ryan played for Stoke for so long.
What a utterly fantastic ambassador to our football club, Stoke on Trent and what an inspiration this man has been.
You epitomised everything great about our wonderful club during your time here. Part of our modern golden era. Too watch the tributes from some of our past players to you reminds me how special we were, how special we are and how special we will be in the future.
The ultimate dream now would be for Michael to lead us back to the Premier league and you eventually come back as manager and lead us to an FA Cup final win and back into Europe.
You are part of us, our fabric, you’ll never be forgotten and you will always be welcome.
Legend, leader, red and white! We’ll be with you!
Thanks Ryan and best of luck to you and your family!
