It undoubtedly cost him a good chunk of money to stay here, it may have possibly cost him England caps and trophies. The only player in the top 20 most capped Stoke players that I've been fortunate enough to watch, Peter Fox last playing apparently in 1993. I doubt I'll get to see a player be effectively trained as a young pro at Stoke and go on to play for England in my lifetime. We will all have Stoke supporting family members that lived their entire life without seeing Stoke play in an FA cup final but Ryan played a huge part in making that happen.
His biggest legacy has been creating new benchmarks that we will probably never see reached again.

Back on the resurrected thread from January 2008, when we made the loan signing permanent, I apparently posted the following;
"Well, blow me down with a feather. ;D
I don't think I have been this surprised by a Stoke incoming transfer, since as a 15 year old paper boy I pulled an Express out of my bag and read on the back page that we were about to sign Alan Hudson.
I can take or leave the Leon Cort deal, but this is the type of transfer I have been hoping Stoke would make for a long time. A good, young, promising player with bags of potential to go on to much better things."
Even with that build up, I can't believe that 13 years later we would just be saying goodbye to an absolute legend who exceeded every expectation and achieved so much for our club.
Similar to someone else on this thread, Ryan is also the last playing connection to the last game I watched with my Dad. Football (and The world in general) has changed an enormous amount in the intervening period but Ryan in a Stoke shirt was the one consistent factor.
There are too many great memories of Ryan to mention, but the last that sticks in my memory, is the Sheffield Wednesday game on Boxing Day 2019, where when everyone else was celebrating Tyrese's equaliser deep into injury time, Ryan was hurrying the players back for the kick off and encouraging them to go for the winner.
Thanks Ryan. It has been an absolute pleasure to watch you play for my club.

I've been struggling to think of something to add all day but I'm just a bit lost for words, it's all been said. An absolute bona fide all-time Stoke legend, no ifs or buts. Good luck Ryan!

Love Mama, such a lovely bloke...... The way he said "Captain" just makes me want to grab him and kiss him on his forehead Mama is, and always will be, one of my favourite players in 40 odd years of home and away with Stoke. I've met him a few times and he's the nicest man on the planet His goal against Villa will live with me forever.

An absolute legend for us fans, the club & the city overall. In my lifetime no player has done as much for our club & I highly doubt any other will to be honest.
I never thought I would get to see Stoke at Wembley & especially play European football, we had a brilliant period which I won't ever forget.
I just hope Ryan knows exactly what he has done & how much he has been appreciated by over the last 14 years. I can't wait for a full "Brit" when we can and give him the send off he deserves.
Captain, Leader, Legend

Probably the best centre half at Stoke since Neil Franklin. Loyal, tough and a true leader. Sincere best wishes to you and your family on whatever travels your future takes you.
THANK YOU RYAN.

Seems ages since he joined,i was away in Essex for a few days so was not even aware he had signed on loan and had planned the journey time for return trip so i would be able to listen to the match on the radio, got north of Birmingham and started to hear snippets of commentary until signal was strong enough no sooner had it settled than Nigel screamed Shawcross has scored,i thought who the f--k is Shawcross! well after 14 years i now know who is his,a model and loyal servant, thank you Ryan.

Attachment DeletedThank for everything Ryan. You gave everything. You should have got MORE England caps. Your partnership with Huth was magnificent. This is truly the end of the the Pulisball/Stokealona era, which I will always cherish. Enjoy Miami with Becks and co! You deserve it! Forever grateful. VFCN

Many, many fantastic things said about him and all true. The one thing that summed him up for me was when I met him on a night out in Nantwich. A genuinely nice bloke, no airs or graces or him giving it the big un or look at me! Just a normal fella having an Orange juice with what looked like his brother.
He's the polar opposite of some of the arseholes that have and are currently putting on our club's shirt.
A sad day, but best of luck to him and his family.

Blimey feel like ive joined this thread a bit late. Proper sad day for the fans and the club. Definitely one of the best defensive partnerships, along with Huth, that ive seen in my time watching Stoke. You are and always will be a genuine legend for this club and im glad i witnessed the success you had with us. Bon voyage Captain.
Ps when you get to Miami nip over to the hard rock stadium and give the dolphins players a kick up the arse, cos ive followed them since 84 and theyve been bloody awful, and its about time we won a bloody superbowl.

It's been coming one way or the other for a while (him not being an actual player of ours i mean) but it's still fucking gutting for it to actually happen, especially when it's the one Stoke player from the last 20 years or so that deserves a PROPER send off from the fans and can't have one.
Absolutely chuffed to bits for him though, that it's so he can continue playing rather than having to retire early due to his problems.
Leader on the pitch and a stand up, bloody decent guy off it. All the best Ryan, you're a genuine Stoke City fucking legend!

Not sure I can add much that hasn't already been said by fans and ex players already. Its a bit emotional as Ryan Shawcross is the link to where the journey began in terms of Stoke supporters being able to forget the preceding 24 years. Best of luck to you and the family in Miami. You deserve the 'legend' status at Stoke and I'm hoping we get to see a proper testimonial game for you in the near future. Thanks for your professionalism, your work rate and your desire to play for Stoke City. You always left everything on the pitch and Stoke supporters will always appreciate that. On a side note, when my son was born in 2009, there were two choices for his name - Ryan and Liam. Ryan won out in the end Looking forward to seeing you in the MLS. Just please take it easy when you play against Toronto FC!
